Your guide to the best luxury hotels in Athens

Athens has a small but unusually concentrated luxury hotel scene: almost every property stands around Syntagma Square, within walking distance of the Acropolis. We currently feature 15 hand-picked luxury hotels in Athens, from the Hotel Grande Bretagne on Syntagma – at 4.6 our highest-rated property in the city – to the King George and The Dolli at Acropolis. Entry rates run from around 150 € to 430 € per night, with a median of about 249 €.Conrad Athens The IlisianConrad Athens The Ilisian · IlisiaWith every booking through suitespot you enjoy a comprehensive package of suitespot benefits:

Athens' best-known properties stand on Syntagma Square: the Hotel Grande Bretagne (from around 377 €, rated 4.6), the neighbouring King George (290 €), the NJV Athens Plaza (177 €) and the Athens Capital Suites (260 €). A few streets away follow the Athens Capital Hotel on Eleftheriou Venizelou Avenue (240 €) and the Academias Hotel (240 €).

Closer to the Acropolis are The Dolli at Acropolis on Mitropoleos Street (436 €) – the city's most expensive address – along with the A77 Suites by Andronis and the NEW Hotel in the Plaka (280 and 190 €). A little outside the centre stand the Conrad Athens The Ilisian on Vasilissis Sofias (300 €) and the InterContinental Athenaeum (155 €) – the lowest entry rate in our portfolio.

Luxury accommodation in Athens: the properties and their suites

Athens is remarkably affordable for a European capital: no property starts above 440 € per night, and the median entry rate is around 249 €.Athens Capital Hotel AthensAthens Capital Hotel Athens · KolonakiThe most traditional addresses stand on Syntagma Square: the Hotel Grande Bretagne, the city's leading address since 1874 (from around 377 €), and the adjacent King George (290 €) – both with the most elaborate suite categories in Athens. The Dolli at Acropolis (436 €) is the newest and most expensive, housed in a neoclassical townhouse below the Acropolis.Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. At the lower end, the InterContinental Athenaeum starts at around 155 € and the Fresh Hotel at 153 €, the NJV Athens Plaza at 177 € and the NEW Hotel at 190 €. For a European capital, only Lisbon matches that level.

Insider tip from our travel advisors

Athens is more compact than most expect: fifteen minutes on foot from Syntagma Square to the Acropolis, five to the Plaka. For a first visit, stay central – the distances are short enough that you will not need a taxi.

Two properties in our portfolio sit deliberately outside: the Grand Resort Lagonissi, around 40 kilometres south on the coast towards Cape Sounion (from around 395 €), and the Sofitel Athens Airport at the terminal in Spata (250 €). One is a beach resort, the other a pure transit hotel – both the wrong choice for a city break, and exactly right for their respective purposes.

Third, on timing: Athens is very hot in July and August, when many Athenians are on the islands themselves. April to June and September to October are the pleasant months – and the Acropolis is bearable then too, though you should still go early in the morning.

Hotels in Athens by area: which district?

Central Athens is small – barely a kilometre separates Syntagma, the Plaka and Monastiraki.Hotel Grande Bretagne AthensHotel Grande Bretagne Athens · PsyriThese four areas cover our portfolio.

Syntagma – the centre

The square in front of parliament is the city's hub, and the front rank stands here: the Hotel Grande Bretagne (from around 377 €, rated 4.6), the King George (290 €), the Athens Capital Suites (260 €) and the NJV Athens Plaza (177 €). The metro runs from here directly to the airport, and everything essential is within walking distance.

Plaka, Monastiraki & the Acropolis – the old town

Below the Acropolis rock: The Dolli at Acropolis on Mitropoleos Street (436 €), the A77 Suites by Andronis on Adrianou (280 €), the NEW Hotel on Filellinon (190 €) and the Perianth Hotel (240 €). The Plaka is the city's oldest quarter – narrow, walkable and lively in the evening.

Kolonaki, Ilisia & Omonia – around the centre

To the north-east lies Kolonaki, the city's most elegant quarter, with the Athens Capital Hotel (240 €) and the Academias Hotel (240 €). On Vasilissis Sofias follows the Conrad Athens The Ilisian (300 €); on Omonia Square, the Fresh Hotel (153 €); and just south, the InterContinental Athenaeum (155 €).

Coast & airport – the special cases

Two properties sit deliberately outside: the Grand Resort Lagonissi, some 40 kilometres south on the Athens Riviera towards Cape Sounion (395 €), a beach resort with its own coves; and the Sofitel Athens Airport in Spata, right at the terminal (250 €). Both are too far out for a city break, and exactly right for a beach stay or an early onward flight respectively.

Athens as a gateway to the islands

For many trips Athens is not the destination but the overture – before or after the islands. That leads to one practical decision, and our properties cover it well.Athens Capital SuitesAthens Capital Suites · Nea Sepolia MpournaziIf you are boarding a ferry in the morning, stay central: from Syntagma Square the metro reaches Piraeus in around 25 minutes, and from there the ferries leave for Santorini, Mykonos and Crete. The Hotel Grande Bretagne, the King George, the Athens Capital Suites and the NJV Athens Plaza all suit that.

If instead you are flying on early, the Sofitel Athens Airport in Spata is the straightforward answer (from around 250 €) – right at the terminal, with no transfer.

And if you want a few days by the sea between city and island, the Grand Resort Lagonissi on the Athens Riviera is the alternative (395 €): around 40 minutes' drive south, with its own coves and a view towards Cape Sounion. Our travel advisors will arrange the combination, transfers included.

The most expensive and the highest-rated hotels in Athens

By our ratings the Hotel Grande Bretagne on Syntagma Square leads at 4.6 – the city's leading address since 1874 and the only property in Athens rated that high in our collection.

On price, The Dolli at Acropolis comes first: around 436 € per night for the neoclassical townhouse below the Acropolis. It is followed by the Grand Resort Lagonissi on the coast (395 €), the Hotel Grande Bretagne (377 €), the Conrad Athens The Ilisian (300 €) and the Sofitel Athens Airport (250 €).

At the other end, the InterContinental Athenaeum starts at around 155 € and the Fresh Hotel at 153 €, the NJV Athens Plaza at 177 € and the NEW Hotel at 190 €.

The real finding about Athens, though, is how narrow the range is: no property starts above 440 € per night – against thirteen properties above 1,000 € in Paris and eight in Rome. With a median entry rate of around 249 €, Athens sits alongside Lisbon and well below every other European capital in our portfolio.

The Acropolis, museums and exclusive services

What our travel advisors arrange most often in Athens are early time slots for the Acropolis – in summer the rock is simply too hot and too crowded from late morning onwards – along with guided visits to the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum, and drivers for day trips to Cape Sounion and Delphi.Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comAsk via WhatsAppWrite an emailFor orientation: from Syntagma Square it is fifteen minutes' walk to the Acropolis, five to the Plaka and about 25 minutes by metro to Piraeus for the island ferries. The airport lies 35 kilometres east, also with a direct metro link from Syntagma.

As a suitespot guest you travel with VIP status: we register your preferences with the hotel before arrival – from a quiet room to the occasion of your trip. On top of that, every property includes breakfast for two, an upgrade subject to availability and up to 100 USD hotel credit.

With a median entry rate of around 249 € per night, that package carries particular weight in Athens – as in Lisbon, on a weekend stay for two it covers a good part of a night.

Frequently asked questions about luxury hotels in Athens

How much does luxury accommodation in Athens cost?

Entry rates across our 15 luxury hotels in Athens start at around 150 € per night (InterContinental Athenaeum, Fresh Hotel) and reach about 430 € per night at The Dolli at Acropolis. The median entry rate is around 249 € per night.

The range is remarkably narrow: no property starts above 440 € – by comparison, thirteen properties start above 1,000 € in Paris and eight in Rome. Athens therefore sits alongside Lisbon and well below every other European capital in our portfolio. With suitespot you always book at direct rates, and the benefits worth over 500 € come on top.

Which is the most expensive hotel in Athens?

By entry rate, The Dolli at Acropolis on Mitropoleos Street leads at around 436 € per night – a neoclassical townhouse below the Acropolis and the newest of the city's leading addresses. It is followed by the Grand Resort Lagonissi on the coast (395 €), the Hotel Grande Bretagne (377 €) and the Conrad Athens The Ilisian (300 €).

Worth noting: the most expensive is not the highest-rated. That is the Hotel Grande Bretagne on Syntagma Square at 4.6, the city's leading address since 1874. And by the standards of other European capitals, none of these figures is high – no property in Athens starts above 440 € per night.

Where should you stay in Athens?

For a first visit, Syntagma Square is the obvious choice: central, with a direct metro link to the airport and to the ferry port of Piraeus, and within walking distance of everything essential. The Hotel Grande Bretagne, the King George, the Athens Capital Suites and the NJV Athens Plaza all stand there.

For old-town character, stay in the Plaka below the Acropolis (A77 Suites by Andronis, NEW Hotel, The Dolli at Acropolis); for elegance and quiet, in Kolonaki (Athens Capital Hotel, Academias Hotel). Note that the Grand Resort Lagonissi lies 40 kilometres south on the coast and the Sofitel right at the airport.

Do I earn points and can I use my status when booking with suitespot?

Yes. suitespot rates are genuine direct rates: you earn regular points and status nights in the respective hotel programme – in Athens above all with Marriott Bonvoy (5 properties), ALL (3), plus Hilton Honors, IHG Rewards, iPrefer and the Leaders Club.

Three of our 15 properties take part in no loyalty programme. You keep your status benefits such as lounge access or upgrades everywhere; the suitespot benefits come in addition. With a median entry rate of around 249 € per night, the hotel credit of up to 100 USD carries particular weight in Athens.

Which hotels in Athens are near the Acropolis?

Closest is The Dolli at Acropolis on Mitropoleos Street (from around 436 €), a neoclassical townhouse below the rock. Also in the Plaka, the old quarter at the foot of the Acropolis, are the A77 Suites by Andronis on Adrianou (280 €) and the NEW Hotel on Filellinon (190 €).

From Syntagma Square – the Grande Bretagne, King George and NJV Athens Plaza – it is about fifteen minutes on foot. One tip regardless of hotel: go early in the morning. In summer the rock is too hot and too crowded from late morning onwards. We are happy to reserve time slots in advance.

Which hotels in Athens offer luxury suites only?

Two properties in our portfolio have no conventional rooms at all: the Athens Capital Suites on Syntagma Square (from around 260 €) and the A77 Suites by Andronis on Adrianou Street in the Plaka (280 €). Both are small and centrally located.

The most elaborate suite categories in the classic sense, however, belong to the Hotel Grande Bretagne and the neighbouring King George on Syntagma – the two most traditional properties in the city. Tell our travel advisors the occasion and the number of guests and they will obtain current suite rates directly from the property.

Is Athens a good stopover before the Greek islands?

Very much so – and the choice of hotel depends on how you travel on. If you are taking a ferry, stay central: from Syntagma Square the metro reaches Piraeus in around 25 minutes. The Hotel Grande Bretagne, the King George, the Athens Capital Suites and the NJV Athens Plaza all work well for that.

If you are flying on early, the Sofitel Athens Airport in Spata is the simplest answer (from around 250 €), right at the terminal. And for a few days by the sea before or after the city, the Grand Resort Lagonissi on the Athens Riviera (395 €) lies around 40 minutes' drive south.

When is the best time to visit Athens?

The pleasant months are April to June and September to October: warm but not hot, with the sights bearably busy. In July and August Athens gets very hot and many Athenians are on the islands themselves – though hotel rates in those months are often lower than in spring.

Whatever the season, one rule holds for the Acropolis: go as early in the morning as you can. In summer the rock is barely tolerable from late morning. Our travel advisors reserve the time slots in advance, which go quickly in high season.
