Your guide to the best luxury resorts and suites in Koh Samui

Koh Samui is a resort island rather than a hotel destination, and our selection reflects that: 12 properties spread around the coast, almost all of them low-rise and set in their own grounds. The range runs from the Renaissance Koh Samui at Lamai to the W Koh Samui at Maenam. Entry rates go from 129 € to 482 € per night, with a median of 308 €.Conrad Koh SamuiConrad Koh Samui · Thong Krut PierWith every booking through suitespot you receive a comprehensive package of suitespot benefits:
  • Complimentary breakfast for two
  • Room upgrade subject to availability
  • Up to 100 USD hotel credit per stay
  • Early check-in and late check-out subject to availability
  • Standard points and status benefits in the hotel programmes

In the north, around Bophut and Plai Laem: Six Senses Samui (from around 392 €), The Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui at Thongson Beach (271 €) and the Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort (220 €).

On the north-west and east coasts: the W Koh Samui at Maenam (482 €), the highest entry rate on the island, Vana Belle Koh Samui at Chaweng Noi (398 €) and the Hyatt Regency Koh Samui at North Chaweng (189 €).

At Lamai in the south-east: Banyan Tree Samui (477 €) and the Renaissance Koh Samui Resort (129 €) – the lowest entry rate in our selection, on the same beach as one of the highest.

And around the south and west: the InterContinental Koh Samui (382 €), the Conrad Koh Samui above Thong Krut (327 €), Cape Fahn Hotel (290 €) and Kimpton Kitalay Samui (205 €).

Suites and pool villas in Koh Samui: which resorts have them

Suites are the single most searched-for thing about Koh Samui, and the island answers the question better than most: because these are resorts rather than city hotels, the larger categories are usually separate structures rather than bigger rooms.Vana Belle Koh SamuiVana Belle Koh Samui · Chaweng NoiThe widest choice is at Vana Belle Koh Samui (from around 398 €), which lists Vana Belle, Jungle, Grand, Premium Ocean Pool and Ocean Pool categories – the last two with their own pool. The InterContinental Koh Samui (382 €) follows with Honeymoon, Tropical Pavilion and Horizon categories, plus two family formats.Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comAsk via WhatsAppWrite an emailThe Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort (220 €) lists Luxury, Garden and Pool categories, the Hyatt Regency Koh Samui (189 €) Executive, Regency and Classic, and the Renaissance Koh Samui Resort (129 €) Panoramic and Ocean – a striking amount of choice at the bottom of the price range.

For families, Banyan Tree Samui (477 €) is the most explicit: Family Deluxe, Family Horizon Hillcrest and Family Ocean Pool. The Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui (271 €) lists a Garden category.

Tell our travel advisors how many of you are travelling and for how long, and they will price the categories that are actually open for your dates – on this island the difference between a room and a villa is often smaller than the brochure suggests.

Our travel advisors' insider tip

The most useful thing to know about Koh Samui is that it does not share Phuket's weather calendar. The island sits on the other side of the peninsula, and its wettest months are October to December, when Phuket is already drying out. If your dates fall in the autumn, that difference decides the trip – ask us before you book either island.

Second, the spread. At a median of 308 €, Koh Samui is not a cheap destination, but the range is unusually wide: from 129 € at the Renaissance to 482 € at the W, a factor of nearly four. The two extremes are not in different leagues of location – the Renaissance and Banyan Tree share the same beach at Lamai.

Third, the programmes: nine of our twelve properties belong to one. Marriott Bonvoy holds four (W, Vana Belle, Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance), IHG Rewards two (InterContinental, Kimpton Kitalay), with Hilton Honors (Conrad), World of Hyatt (Hyatt Regency) and ALL (Banyan Tree) one each. Six Senses Samui, Cape Fahn and the Anantara Bophut take part in no points programme – the suitespot benefits apply there all the same.

Luxury resorts in Koh Samui by beach: where to stay?

Koh Samui's coast divides into four stretches, and the beach matters more here than the category – each has a different water, a different crowd and a different drive to the airport.Hyatt Regency Koh SamuiHyatt Regency Koh Samui · Ko Samui DistriktThese four stretches cover the selection.

Bophut and Plai Laem – the quiet north

The calmest part of the island, with shallow water and the Fisherman's Village at Bophut: Six Senses Samui at Plai Laem (from around 392 €), The Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui at Thongson Beach (271 €) and the Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort (220 €). Closest to the airport, and the stretch to choose for a quiet stay.

Maenam and Chaweng – north-west and east

The long, open beaches: the W Koh Samui at Maenam (482 €) on the north-west shore, and on the east coast Vana Belle Koh Samui at Chaweng Noi (398 €) and the Hyatt Regency Koh Samui at North Chaweng (189 €). Chaweng is the busiest part of the island – restaurants and nightlife within walking distance.

Lamai – the south-east

A single bay in the south-east holding both ends of our price range: Banyan Tree Samui (477 €) above the beach and the Renaissance Koh Samui Resort (129 €) on it. Lamai is quieter than Chaweng but not empty, and it is the best answer if the budget matters and the beach does too.

The south-west and the remaining locations

The quieter south and west, where the resorts sit in their own grounds: the InterContinental Koh Samui (382 €), the Conrad Koh Samui above Thong Krut (327 €), Cape Fahn Hotel Koh Samui (290 €) and Kimpton Kitalay Samui (205 €). Sunset side of the island, and the longest transfers – worth knowing if you arrive late.

Koh Samui or Phuket? The difference is the rainy season

This is the question we are asked most often about southern Thailand, and the answer is not about the resorts – it is about the calendar.Six Senses SamuiSix Senses SamuiKoh Samui lies in the Gulf of Thailand, Phuket in the Andaman Sea, on the other side of the peninsula. Their rainy seasons therefore fall at different times. Phuket is wettest from May to October; Koh Samui's wettest months are October to December, with November the heaviest.

In practice: for a trip in June, July or August, Koh Samui is usually the drier choice. For November, the reverse holds – and a Samui booking made without knowing this is the single most common disappointment we see in Thailand.

The two islands also differ in shape. Phuket is larger, has a far bigger selection and a proper town; Koh Samui is smaller and more self-contained, and its resorts sit in their own grounds rather than along a strip. If you are choosing between them for the same dates, our travel advisors will compare both for your week rather than argue for one.

What a stay in Koh Samui costs

The highest entry rate is the W Koh Samui at Maenam at around 482 € per night, followed closely by Banyan Tree Samui at Lamai (477 €), Vana Belle Koh Samui (398 €), Six Senses Samui (392 €) and the InterContinental Koh Samui (382 €).

The middle of the field is held by the Conrad Koh Samui (327 €), Cape Fahn Hotel (290 €) and The Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui (271 €).

At the lower end: the Anantara Bophut (220 €), Kimpton Kitalay Samui (205 €), the Hyatt Regency Koh Samui (189 €) and the Renaissance Koh Samui Resort (129 €), the lowest entry rate in our selection.

The median sits at 308 € per night. What makes Koh Samui unusual is the width of that range – nearly a factor of four between the cheapest and the dearest, which is more than most beach destinations we cover. The useful consequence: the beach you want is almost always available at more than one price level. Lamai has both a 129 € and a 477 € address.

Ang Thong, the temples and exclusive services

What our travel advisors arrange most often on Koh Samui is the day trip to the Ang Thong National Marine Park – the archipelago of forty-two islands west of Samui, reached by speedboat – along with the Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem temples in the north and the Sunday market at Lamai.Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comAsk via WhatsAppWrite an emailBeyond the island, two trips recur: Koh Tao for diving and snorkelling, and Koh Phangan next door, quieter than its reputation outside full-moon week.

For orientation: Samui airport sits in the north-east, a few minutes from Bophut and Chaweng, around thirty minutes from Lamai and up to forty-five from the south-west. The island road runs the whole way round, so no resort is more than an hour from any other.

As a suitespot guest you travel with VIP status: we pass your preferences to the resort before you arrive – on Koh Samui most often a room close to the water, or a quieter part of the grounds if you are staying at one of the larger resorts. On top of that, every property includes breakfast for two, an upgrade subject to availability and up to 100 USD hotel credit.

Frequently asked questions about luxury hotels in Koh Samui

Which Koh Samui resorts have suites and pool villas?

The widest choice is at Vana Belle Koh Samui (from around 398 €), with Vana Belle, Jungle, Grand, Premium Ocean Pool and Ocean Pool categories – the last two with their own pool. The InterContinental Koh Samui (382 €) lists Honeymoon, Tropical Pavilion and Horizon categories.

The Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort (220 €) has Luxury, Garden and Pool categories, the Hyatt Regency Koh Samui (189 €) Executive, Regency and Classic, and the Renaissance Koh Samui Resort (129 €) Panoramic and Ocean.

For families, Banyan Tree Samui (477 €) is the most explicit, with Family Deluxe, Family Horizon Hillcrest and Family Ocean Pool categories.

How much does a luxury resort in Koh Samui cost?

Entry rates for our 12 properties run from around 129 € per night (Renaissance Koh Samui Resort at Lamai) to around 482 € per night (W Koh Samui at Maenam). The median is 308 €.

That is a spread of nearly fourfold – wider than most beach destinations we cover. It also means the beach you want is usually available at more than one price level: Lamai has both the 129 € Renaissance and the 477 € Banyan Tree.

With suitespot you always book at direct rates, and the benefits worth more than 500 € come on top.

Koh Samui or Phuket – which island is better?

It depends almost entirely on when you are going, because the two sit on opposite sides of the peninsula and have opposite rainy seasons.

Phuket, on the Andaman Sea, is wettest from May to October. Koh Samui, in the Gulf of Thailand, is wettest from October to December, with November the heaviest month.

So for June to August, Koh Samui is usually the drier choice; for November, Phuket is. Beyond the weather: Phuket is larger with a far bigger selection, Koh Samui smaller and more self-contained, with resorts in their own grounds rather than along a strip.

Which beach should I stay on in Koh Samui?

Bophut and Plai Laem in the north are the calmest, with shallow water and the Fisherman's Village – and they are closest to the airport. Chaweng on the east coast is the busiest, with restaurants and nightlife on the doorstep. Lamai in the south-east sits between the two and holds both ends of our price range. The south and west are the quietest, with the longest transfers and the sunset side of the island.

The island road runs the whole way round, so no resort is more than about an hour from any other – the beach decides the feel of the stay, not your access to the island.

Do I earn points and can I use my status with suitespot?

Yes, at nine of our twelve Koh Samui properties. Marriott Bonvoy holds four – the W Koh Samui, Vana Belle, The Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui and the Renaissance Koh Samui Resort. IHG Rewards holds two (InterContinental, Kimpton Kitalay), with Hilton Honors (Conrad), World of Hyatt (Hyatt Regency) and ALL (Banyan Tree) one each.

Six Senses Samui, Cape Fahn Hotel and the Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort take part in no points programme. The suitespot benefits apply at all twelve regardless.

When is the best time to visit Koh Samui?

The driest and most reliable months run from January to April, with June to August also generally good – and notably drier than Phuket at the same time.

The wettest stretch is October to December, with November the heaviest month of the year. Rates fall then, but the sea can be rough and boat trips to Ang Thong are often cancelled. If your dates are fixed in that window, tell us and we will say plainly what to expect.

Which Koh Samui resort offers the best value?

The Renaissance Koh Samui Resort at around 129 € per night – on Lamai beach, the same stretch as the 477 € Banyan Tree, and it belongs to Marriott Bonvoy. For the price difference, the beach is the same water.

Just above it, the Hyatt Regency Koh Samui at North Chaweng (189 €) puts you within walking distance of the island's busiest stretch, and Kimpton Kitalay Samui (205 €) is the quieter alternative at a similar level.

How far is it from the airport to the resorts?

Samui airport sits in the north-east of the island, which makes the northern resorts the shortest transfers: Bophut and Plai Laem are a few minutes away, Chaweng around ten.

Lamai in the south-east is roughly thirty minutes, and the south and west – the InterContinental, Conrad and Kimpton Kitalay – up to forty-five. Worth knowing if you land late: the island road is well surfaced but unlit in places.
