The range is wider than the destination’s reputation suggests. Entry rates start at around EUR 346 a night at the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort in the North Malé Atoll, followed by The Standard Huruvalhi in the Raa Atoll (around EUR 363), Noku Maldives in the Noonu Atoll (around EUR 490) and the Taj Exotica Resort in the South Malé Atoll (around EUR 503). Which atoll? The distance to Malé decides how much of your arrival day survives
Every international flight lands at Velana airport near Malé. From there you continue by boat or by air, and because the resort arranges that transfer, the distance determines how much of your first and last day is left. Our 37 resorts are spread across the whole chain: nine lie within 40 kilometres of Malé as the crow flies, 29 further out, the most distant around 410 kilometres to the south.Jumeirah Maldives Olhahali IslandThe figures below are straight-line distances calculated from the resorts’ own coordinates. As a rule of thumb, the further out a resort sits, the more likely a domestic flight is added to the boat – and the more your arrival time depends on a connection that only runs in daylight. Up to 20 km – the Malé atolls on the doorstep
Closest to the airport are SO/ Maldives (about 2.5 km, from around EUR 555), the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort (6.8 km, from around EUR 346 and the least expensive entry rate in our selection), the Taj Exotica Resort (10 km, from around EUR 503), the JW Marriott Kaafu Atoll Island Resort (11 km), Baros Maldives (15 km, from around EUR 604) and Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru (18 km). This group suits short stays, a few nights attached to a longer trip, and anyone who would rather not travel for hours after a night flight.
20 to 50 km – still within day range
This band holds the most expensive properties of the northern half: the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi (26 km, from around EUR 2,437, rated 4.9), One&Only Reethi Rah (41 km, from around EUR 2,012) and, on the Fari Islands in the North Malé Atoll, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands (46 km, from around EUR 1,616) alongside Patina Maldives (48 km, from around EUR 1,720) – two resorts on the same island group, which for once makes a direct price comparison meaningful. Coco Bodu Hithi (31 km) and COMO Cocoa Island (31 km) complete the band.

Few questions come up more often at this destination, and few are answered more vaguely. Many do; it is simply that the rates you see with us are room rates. On a one-island resort with nothing else within reach, that is a real cost to plan for. What every suitespot booking does include is breakfast for two and, at most properties, a hotel credit of up to USD 100 per stay – which counts for more here than in a city with a hundred restaurants. If you specifically want half board or full board, say so when you enquire: we will get the supplement from the resort so you know the total before you book rather than once you are on the island.
What a luxury resort in the Maldives costs – measured against the rest of the tropics we cover
Entry rates across our 37 resorts currently run from around EUR 346 a night (Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort) to around EUR 2,930 (Cheval Blanc Randheli), with a typical figure of around EUR 798. Two properties – Kuredhivaru and Le Méridien Maldives – carry no published rate with us and are quoted on request.
Comparison with similar destinations in our portfolio helps place that. On Bora Bora our five resorts start between EUR 886 and 1,773 a night – there is no lower end at all. In Fiji, by contrast, it begins at around EUR 140. The Maldives sit between the two, and with the widest spread of the three: seven properties start below EUR 600, five above EUR 1,500. The common assumption that the destination is simply unaffordable does not survive our own rate list – though the assumption that on-island extras cost more than elsewhere certainly does.
One factor moves the final bill more than the category: length of stay. Because the transfer to a distant atoll can eat a full day in each direction, a week on one island is almost always the better arithmetic than two half-weeks on two. What do 4, 5 or 7 stars mean in the Maldives?
Very little. The Maldives has no star classification comparable to Europe’s, and terms such as “7-star resort” are marketing rather than a rating. Three figures you can see with us are far more reliable: the entry rate (across our 37 properties, roughly EUR 346 to 2,930), the villa category – beach villa, water villa, with or without a private pool – and the distance to the airport, which determines the transfer. Those three will place a resort far more accurately than any number of stars.
How long should a Maldives trip be?
Seven nights is a good benchmark, and on one island. The nine resorts within 40 kilometres of Malé also work for shorter stays because the transfer is short – that group is well suited to a few nights attached to a longer trip. For the outer atolls the journey can easily take a full day in each direction, so five nights is the minimum below which the trip stops making sense. Changing islands within one trip is possible but almost always means an extra transfer leg back through Malé.
