Why we recommend it: Because it lies in Barangay Yapak, at the northern end of the island, where the coast turns into cliffs – and because the resort has a bay of its own, with Chi The Spa above it. Dinner is at Rima, Sirena and Vintana; the resort counts four restaurants and two bars in all. A shuttle runs to White Beach, three kilometres. Seven villas have a private pool, and there is the resort’s large pool besides. Our recommended category is called Premier Seaview.
Where exactly it stands: this destination is called Malay – that is the municipality in Aklan province to which Boracay belongs. The hotel stands on Boracay Island itself, not on the mainland.

Where to stay in Malay: northern Boracay, above a bay of its own
The Shangri-La Boracay Resort stands in Barangay Yapak in the north of Boracay – three kilometres from White Beach, three from Mount Luho, four from D’Mall and Puka Beach, eight from the Caticlan jetty and airport and 62 from Kalibo airport.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants distance from the bustle on Boracay and still to be ten minutes from the best-known beach in the Philippines – a shuttle runs there.
What lies within reach: White Beach, four kilometres of white sand, three kilometres away; Puka Beach in the north, coarser sand and fewer people, four kilometres; Mount Luho, at 100 metres the highest point on the island, three kilometres.
On arrival: Caticlan airport lies eight kilometres away on the mainland, with the ferry from Caticlan to Cagban in between – a crossing of about fifteen minutes. The larger airport, Kalibo, is 62 kilometres away, a good two hours by road.
From 63 square metres: the best hotel in Malay from the inside

The villas: Tree House and two Loft villas at 216 square metres each, a Villa at 266 – and, considerably larger, another Villa, the Ocean Villa, the Beach Villa and the Presidential Villa. Seven of them have a pool of their own.
On the view: this hotel’s motifs are the sea and the garden – seven categories look out to the sea, four to the garden, one to both and one from the cliff out to sea.
