Your guide to the best luxury hotel in Pune

Pune is the city Mumbai drives to when it needs air. Six hundred metres higher, behind the Western Ghats, and therefore drier and cooler than the coast – the region’s summer address since colonial times and today India’s engineering city.Conrad PuneConrad Pune · SangamvadiFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Pune and picked one: a single luxury hotel – with the most evenly spaced room ladder we know.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

One luxury hotel in Pune – and who it suits

Our choice for Pune is the Conrad Pune at 165 € a night. It carries nine categories, three of them suites.

They come with breakfast for two, a hotel credit of 100 US dollars, a room upgrade subject to availability and early check-in along with late check-out. The benefits apply from the first night, and with Hilton Honors you get double points – and that from 165 €.

What makes it interesting, though, is the square metres.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

The room ladder at the Conrad Pune has a beat. All nine categories state a floor area, and the four steps are:

42 square metres – Executive Room and Premier Room
82 – Deluxe Suite
123 – Premier Suite
164 – Presidential Suite

See it? That is one, two, three and four times the same room. Each step adds another entry room, almost to the square metre.

That is useful, because it means you do not have to weigh things up – you can simply calculate. If 42 square metres are enough for two of you, 82 are enough for four – and the Deluxe Suite is not somewhat larger than the room, it is twice the size.

In most cases the jump from the first category to the second is small and the one from the second-last to the last is enormous. Here every jump is the same. A ladder that climbs this evenly is rare.

Our advice: tell us the number of people, not the category. In this case the right step really can be worked out – and the upgrade subject to availability then moves you, at best, a whole unit further rather than just a little.

Where to stay in Pune: in Sangamvadi, by the rivers

The Conrad Pune stands in Sangamvadi, where the Mula and Mutha rivers meet – sangam means confluence, and the district is named after it.

That is the practical side of Pune: from here it is a few minutes to the Koregaon Park area with its restaurants and cafés, and just as few into the old centre around the Shaniwar Wada, the Peshwa palace of 1732, of which the walls and the gate remain after a fire.

Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants to see Pune as a city rather than a stopover – and for anyone here on business, because the technology parks to the west are easy to reach from Sangamvadi.

For orientation: Pune airport is about a quarter of an hour away. Mumbai is roughly three hours by expressway, and the Western Ghats with Lonavala and the caves of Karla and Bhaja begin halfway there.

Rooms and suites: the best hotel in Pune from the inside

The Conrad Pune carries nine categories, and three of them are suites. All nine state a floor area – rarer than you would think, and it makes this destination unusually easy to compare.

The ladder starts at 42 square metres, and three categories sit on that step: the Executive Room and two Premier Room. What differs there is not the size but the floor and the fittings.

Above them follow the Deluxe Suite at 82 square metres, the Premier Suite at 123 and the Presidential Suite at 164.

On the view this hotel makes no statement – none of the nine categories names a direction. So we claim none, and if the outlook matters to you we ask before booking.

Tell our travel advisors how many of you there are and whether you are working. With nine categories on four clear steps, that is the whole decision.

What a night in a luxury hotel in Pune costs

A night in a luxury hotel in Pune costs 165 €.

Conrad Pune165 €1st night

The benefits apply from the first night. For a city many people come to on business for one night, that is the sentence that matters.

When it is most comfortable: from November to February. Dry air, mild days, cool evenings – Pune’s real season, and the reason the city was once laid out as a hill retreat.

When it is greenest: from July to September, the monsoon. The waterfalls run in the Western Ghats, the slopes around Lonavala turn brilliant green, and the city smells of rain on dust.

When it is warmest: in April and May. At six hundred metres it stays markedly more bearable than down on the coast – which was historically the whole point of this city.

When to book early: over Diwali in October or November, for Ganesh Chaturthi in August or September – Pune celebrates that festival on a scale few cities match – and around the big conferences. With one address the city is full instantly.

How long to stay: two nights. One for the old town and the Shaniwar Wada – and one for a day in the Western Ghats.

You earn points and status benefits with Hilton Honors, and at double rate.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

The Western Ghats, hotel credit and exclusive services in a 5-star hotel

The Western Ghats are why Pune is what it is. The range runs parallel to the west coast and holds the monsoon on the seaward side – behind it, on the Deccan plateau, Pune sits in the rain shadow. That means less humidity, cooler nights and the kind of air Mumbai once travelled here for.

To see the Ghats, head towards Lonavala. Halfway to Mumbai the slopes open up, and two Buddhist cave monasteries stand in the rock: Karla, with its great hall from the second century BCE, and Bhaja with its stupas – both cut into the hillside, both reached on foot up steps.

The hotel credit is meant for the evenings after that: 100 US dollars, with no rate condition and no additional requirement.

What our travel advisors arrange most often beyond that: a driver for a day into the Ghats – the road is good, the navigation is not – and the early check-in, because flights from Europe via Mumbai or Delhi mostly reach Pune in the morning and a room at nine saves the first day.

And then there are the things that always come with it: the room upgrade subject to availability, the late check-out and breakfast for two – every day, from the first night.
