The Ivy Hotel Baltimore · Mount VernonFor couples and food lovers, our advice is The Ivy Hotel Baltimore: an 1889 mansion with just 17 rooms and suites, whose rate includes breakfast, afternoon tea, cocktails and a chauffeured car for trips around town. If you want to step out of the door and onto the waterfront in the evening, book the Sagamore Pendry Baltimore on Thames Street.Behind the facade at the corner of Biddle and Calvert Streets lies a Gilded Age story. Banker John Gilman had architect Charles Carson build the mansion in 1889 but died before he could move in. Later it was home to William Painter, inventor of the bottle cap, and Thomas Futcher, a physician at Johns Hopkins; in the end the house belonged to the city.
In 2012 investors bought the building, put more than 18 million US dollars into its restoration and opened it in 2015 as The Ivy Hotel Baltimore. Today you stay among 23 fireplaces, beneath the original skylit staircase, in one of only 17 rooms and suites; each has a gas fireplace and a heated limestone bathroom floor.
Valet parking and a chauffeured car for destinations in the city are part of the concept. On the second floor, The Spa at The Ivy welcomes day guests too, with massages and Nelly De Vuyst facials; the signature Nirvana Retreat lasts 120 minutes. Pets are welcome.
Maryland on the plate: Magdalena, A Maryland Bistro at The Ivy Hotel Baltimore cooks from scratch with ingredients from Chesapeake Bay, rooted in the region and open to ideas from around the world. Its wine list is recognized by Wine Spectator, and for small groups there are five private rooms, among them the Garden Room, the Treasury and the Wine Cellar.
What is included: Hotel guests have breakfast next to the courtyard, afternoon tea is served later in the day, and cocktails at the Mansion Bar are part of the rate. Only dinner at Magdalena and the spa are extra.
Out in town: Staying at a 5-star hotel in Baltimore, you should try the blue crabs: steamed, seasoned with Old Bay and cracked open at the table with a wooden mallet. Crab cakes are on menus all year, and so are the stalls at Lexington Market.
Order crab cakes heavy on crab and light on filler, a Maryland crab soup and oysters from the bay. With coffee, have a Berger cookie under its thick layer of chocolate fudge.
