With a list this long, what matters is not what you ask for but what you narrow it down with. And here comes the surprise:
“A suite” tells nobody anything at this hotel. Of 85 categories, 56 are suites, plus four penthouses. Asking for a suite has named 60 of 85 possibilities.
What actually narrows it down, in this order:
• First: the direction. 34 of 85 categories look out on the harbour – the hotel’s most common view. And it covers five of the six largest categories. Say “facing the harbour” and you have arrived in the top half of the list.
• Second: the floor area – but it is scarce. Only 16 of 85 categories state a square-metre figure at all. Naming a number therefore narrows things to a short list rather than to a category – and that is exactly why a phone call pays off.
• Third: the floor. 25 of 85 categories carry Fairmont Gold in the name, which is the club floor. That fits the programme: ALL (Accor) is Accor’s programme and Fairmont belongs to it – so you keep earning as usual.
And the two largest categories have names worth knowing: Patience and Deliverance, 111 square metres each, both facing the harbour. Those were the two ships the castaways of the Sea Venture built on Bermuda in 1610 to carry on to Virginia. That is the island’s founding story – and here it is written on two doors.
Our advice: give us the direction, the square metres and the floor – in that order. You can save yourself the word “suite”.
The Hamilton Princess stands at Pitts Bay, on the western edge of Hamilton – and Hamilton is small enough that you walk into town rather than drive.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants the harbour as a base – and the beach as a day out.
What is within reach: Front Street with its pastel-coloured façades, where the cruise ships and the ferries tie up; the ferry itself, which runs from Hamilton across the Great Sound to the Royal Naval Dockyard, the old British naval yard at the west end; and St. George’s in the east, the oldest continuously inhabited English town in the New World and a World Heritage Site.
Then the beaches. The famous ones are on the south shore: Horseshoe Bay and the coves beside it, with the pale pink sand that takes its colour from ground-up shells and tiny marine organisms. The hotel’s beach club is there too.
For orientation: the island is a good 30 kilometres long and barely two at its widest – from Hamilton you reach any point in under an hour. Rental cars are not available to visitors; you take taxis, buses, ferries or a scooter.
The Hamilton Princess Beach Club offers 85 categories – an unusually long list. They break down into 56 suites, 25 rooms and four penthouses.
Sixteen of them state a floor area. Our travel advisors confirm the size of the other categories before you book.
The largest with a figure, from the top:
• Patience Suite and Deliverance Suite, 111 square metres each, both Harbor View.
• Pitts Bay Suite at 85, Harbor View, and Infinity Suite at 85, Pool View.
• Penthouse Suite at 75 and Marina Suite at 66, both facing the harbour.
• Below them two suites at 55 each, one to the harbour and one to the garden, and a Signature Room at 34 square metres.
And the views, because here they are the real ordering: 34 categories look out on the harbour, nine on the bay, nine on the city, seven on the garden, and two each on Pitts Bay and the pool.
What you see from the harbour side: masts. The harbour at Hamilton is a sailing harbour with scheduled ferries threading through it, and because the bay is sheltered the water often stands as still as a basin. That is this hotel’s motif.
A night at the luxury hotel in Hamilton starts at 330 euros. Since it is our only hotel in town there is no range – that is the entry point to a list that runs up to the 111 square metre suites.
Five benefits are included and all apply from the first night: breakfast for two people at the Crown & Anchor restaurant, a hotel credit of 100 US dollars, an upgrade on arrival, early check-in and late check-out – the last three subject to availability – and through ALL (Accor) the regular points and status benefits.
When the water is warmest: from July to October. The Atlantic around Bermuda is at swimming temperature then, and the pink sand of the south shore is the reason people come.
When the air is most pleasant: in April, May and November. Mild, dry, breezy enough for the terrace – and the city goes about its own business.
When the sailing happens: in early summer. Bermuda is a regatta destination, and staying on the harbour then means you see the boats rather than pictures of them.
When the island is quietest: from January to March. Cooler, clearer, the golf courses free, the restaurants without a wait – and the prices lower.
When to enquire early: for the regatta weeks and the summer holidays. Even 85 categories sell out then.
How long to stay: four to seven nights. Bermuda is not a stopover – the journey earns itself from about a week.
And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.
Bermuda’s history begins with a disaster. In 1609 the Sea Venture, bound for Virginia, struck a reef off the island; every castaway got ashore, wintered there, and built two new ships from the wreck’s timber and Bermuda cedar. They named them Patience and Deliverance and sailed on to Jamestown in 1610. That is how Bermuda became English – and it is what this hotel’s two largest suites are called today.

• The pink sand. On the south shore it is pale pink, and not because of the light: the sand holds ground-up shells and the remains of tiny marine organisms that are red.
• Bermuda shorts. Here they are not holiday wear but business dress – with a jacket, a tie and knee socks. In Hamilton you see it every working day.
• The caves. In the east lie the Crystal Caves: limestone caverns with clear, deep pools crossed by walkways.
And the benefits pay into all of that: the 100 US dollar credit is a real amount on an island that imports everything; breakfast for two at the Crown & Anchor is fixed to one table, so it can be planned around; and early check-in and late check-out (subject to availability) suit the flight times to North America and Europe, which here are often early or late.
What our travel advisors arrange most often: the shuttle to the beach club on the south shore – because the beach and the hotel are not in the same place – and a day on the water in the Great Sound, because Bermuda opens up differently from the sea than from the one road that runs the length of the island.
And once more the order this destination recommends: direction, square metres, floor. Not the word “suite”.
