Your guide to the best luxury hotels in Koloa

Koloa is a small plantation town in the south of Kauai, and the Poipu coast belongs to it. With a little luck, Hawaiian monk seals doze on the sand of Poipu Beach, at Spouting Horn the surf forces water hissing up through the lava, and between December and March humpbacks surface out at sea. Choose a 5-star hotel in Koloa and you sleep within earshot of the waves. At the same time, the luxury hotels in Koloa are a handy starting point for Waimea Canyon and boat trips to the Na Pali Coast.Ko’a Kea Resort on Poipu BeachKo’a Kea Resort on Poipu BeachCouples who want to hear the surf should book the Ko’a Kea Resort on Poipu Beach: a small resort with 121 rooms right on Poipu Beach, where nine out of ten rooms face the water. Families and golfers head for the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort, with river pools, a saltwater lagoon and the 18-hole Poipu Bay course.

If your ideal evening involves a rum cocktail on the beach, choose the Sheraton Kauai Resort; its RumFire looks out over the Pacific in a wide arc.

History

Koloa's luxury hotels and their history: what you experience on the south shore today

Inland lies Old Koloa Town. Around the sugar plantation founded in 1835 grew a village of wooden houses that now hold small shops and cafés; an afternoon there fits into any stay.

Grand Hyatt Kauai ResortGrand Hyatt Kauai Resort · Poipu

The Ko’a Kea Resort on Poipu Beach stands where the Poipu Beach Hotel had welcomed guests since the 1960s, until Hurricane Iniki destroyed it in 1992. It was rebuilt as a small resort with 121 rooms; the pool and the lava-rock whirlpool are only steps from the sand.

The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort opened in 1990 as the Hyatt Regency Kauai on about 50 oceanfront acres. After Iniki it closed for roughly six months, and since 2005, after an extensive renovation, it has carried the Grand Hyatt name. The architecture recalls Hawaiian buildings of the 1920s and 1930s, and at the Hawaiian Cultural Center you can learn lei making, hula and ukulele.

At the Sheraton Kauai Resort, the Ocean Lobby and the porte-cochère were refreshed in 2012, joined by an open-air Ocean Courtyard with fire pits and a café, the RumFire restaurant and a larger multi-level pool area.

Pools

These luxury hotels in Koloa have a pool – river pools, a saltwater lagoon and a lava-rock whirlpool

Splashing for kids: At the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort, freshwater pools flow into one another across several levels, linked by river channels, with a waterslide and sun decks. Prefer salt water? Switch to the lagoon with its sandy bottom.

Sheraton Kauai ResortSheraton Kauai Resort · Poipu

On the sand at Poipu: The Ko’a Kea Resort on Poipu Beach has an oceanfront pool and a lava-rock whirlpool, flanked by daybeds for two. From the thatched Kala Kai Pool Bar the view sweeps across the ocean in a half circle, and fire pits glow in the evening. At the Sheraton Kauai Resort, a multi-level lagoon-style pool sits by the ocean, with a whirlpool and a children's pool; a second pool in the garden lies next to a koi pond.

Dining

Dining at Koloa's luxury hotels: Red Salt, Tidepools and rum on the beach

Modern Hawaiian: Red Salt at the Ko’a Kea Resort on Poipu Beach takes its name from Kauai's red ’alaea salt. Executive Chef Kenny Giambalvo cooks with island ingredients at breakfast and dinner, and in the Dinner Pa'ina series he serves five courses at the chef's table. The Red Salt Sushi Bar offers fish from local waters, sake and Japanese whisky, walk-ins only.
