Why we recommend it: Because it is the hotel with which the Shinkansen arrived in Nagasaki: opened on 16 January 2024, 207 rooms in a tower directly connected to the station – the Nishi Kyushu line ends beneath the hotel, the lobby is on the seventh floor, and the building is conceived as a ship, as befits a harbour city. Three restaurants: an all-day dining with terrace and two Japanese ones, with the ingredients of the prefecture. Our advice: Book the Executive and say which view you would like. With 207 rooms and twelve suites the upgrade on arrival is a real chance here, and it usually lands in the Corner Suite. Where to stay in Nagasaki: above the station, at the end of the Shinkansen
The Nagasaki Marriott Hotel stands at 1-1 Onouemachi, right at Nagasaki station – five hundred metres from platform to lobby, through the building; one kilometre from Dejima, two from Glover Garden, two and a half from the Peace Park and forty road kilometres from the airport at Omura.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone travelling Kyushu by train – and for anyone wanting to see a harbour city in a day on foot and by tram.
What lies within reach: Dejima, the reconstructed island of the Dutch, two stops by tram; the Peace Park with the hypocentre and the Atomic Bomb Museum, three stops to the north; and Glover Garden with the villas of the Scottish merchants above the harbour, a quarter of an hour to the south.
For orientation: the Shinkansen runs from Nagasaki to Takeo-Onsen, with a change to Fukuoka in an hour and a half; Nagasaki airport lies on an island in Omura Bay, three-quarters of an hour by bus. In Nagasaki one takes the tram; the mountains take the ropeway.
