Your guide to the best luxury hotels in Shanghai

Shanghai is our largest selection anywhere in Asia: 46 properties, ahead of Bangkok and Singapore with 42 each. Entry rates run from about 70 € to 724 € per night, and the median sits at roughly 194 € – which means a city with a Bvlgari, a Capella, a Peninsula, two Waldorf Astorias and three Hyatt houses also has a Grand Hyatt at 121 €.Mandarin Oriental Pudong ShanghaiMandarin Oriental Pudong Shanghai · LujiazuiWith every booking through suitespot you receive a comprehensive package of suitespot benefits:
  • Complimentary breakfast for two
  • Room upgrade subject to availability
  • Up to 100 USD hotel credit per stay
  • Early check-in and late check-out subject to availability
  • Standard points and status benefits in the hotel programmes

At the top: the Bvlgari on North Henan Road (from around 724 €), Capella Shanghai Jian Ye Li in Xuhui (590 €), the J Hotel in the Shanghai Tower (418 €), Bellagio Shanghai (376 €), The Peninsula at No. 32 The Bund (358 €) and Alila Shanghai (350 €).

The middle is unusually deep, which is what 46 properties buys you: W Shanghai - The Bund (309 €), Upper House (310 €), The Ritz-Carlton Pudong at the IFC (303 €), The St. Regis on the Bund (292 €), the Waldorf Astoria Qiantan (287 €), The Shanghai EDITION (285 €), the Park Hyatt (268 €), Regent Shanghai on the Bund (255 €), The PuLi (238 €) and Andaz ITC (221 €).

And the accessible end is the part that surprises people. The Grand Hyatt in the Jin Mao Tower starts at 121 €, the Conrad on Nanjing East Road at 108 €, the InterContinental Pudong at 86 €, the Kerry Hotel Pudong at 129 €, Hyatt on the Bund at 148 € and the Pudong Shangri-La at 150 €.

The Bund or Pudong? The oldest question in Shanghai

Every stay in Shanghai starts with this decision, and our selection is deep enough on both sides that neither one limits you.The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai PudongThe Ritz-Carlton Shanghai Pudong · LujiazuiThe strength of the pull is visible in the names alone. Seven of our properties carry the Bund in their own name – the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund (from around 220 €), Regent Shanghai on the Bund (255 €), W Shanghai - The Bund (309 €), The St. Regis on the Bund (292 €), Banyan Tree Shanghai on the Bund (229 €), Hyatt on the Bund (148 €) and Sofitel Shanghai North Bund (111 €). The Peninsula's address is simply No. 32 The Bund.Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comAsk via WhatsAppWrite an emailNo other district in our entire portfolio is used as a brand suffix this consistently, and it tells you what the waterfront is worth commercially.

Across the river, Pudong answers with height rather than history, and it concentrates on one street.

Four of our properties stand on Century Avenue in Lujiazui: The Ritz-Carlton Pudong at No. 8, in the IFC (303 €), the Grand Hyatt at No. 88, in the Jin Mao Tower (121 €), the Park Hyatt at No. 100 (268 €) and Regent Shanghai Pudong at No. 210 (186 €). The J Hotel in the Shanghai Tower (418 €), the Pudong Shangri-La (150 €) and the Mandarin Oriental Pudong (220 €) are minutes away.

The spread on that one avenue – 121 € to 303 € – is the most useful number on this page. It is the same pattern we find on Wireless Road in Bangkok: within Lujiazui the location premium is close to nothing, and what you are paying for is the house and the floor you are on.

The short guidance: the Bund for a first visit, the old city and the view of the towers; Pudong for business, for the airport link and for being inside the view rather than looking at it.

Luxury hotels in Shanghai city centre, district by district

With 46 properties the district list is longer than in any other Asian city we cover, and the differences between them are real. The Peninsula ShanghaiThe Peninsula Shanghai · BundMost of the selection falls into five areas, with a handful well outside them.

The Bund and the Huangpu waterfront

The largest group, around a dozen properties: the Bvlgari on North Henan Road (from around 724 €), The Peninsula at No. 32 The Bund (358 €), W Shanghai - The Bund (309 €), The St. Regis on the Bund (292 €), The Shanghai EDITION (285 €), Regent Shanghai on the Bund (255 €), Banyan Tree (229 €), the Waldorf Astoria on the Bund (220 €), the Fairmont Peace Hotel on Nanjing Road East (179 €), Hyatt on the Bund (148 €) and the Conrad (108 €).

Lujiazui and central Pudong

Around ten properties across the river, four of them on Century Avenue: the J Hotel in the Shanghai Tower (418 €), The Ritz-Carlton Pudong (303 €), the Park Hyatt (268 €), the Mandarin Oriental Pudong (220 €), Regent Pudong (189 €), the JW Marriott Marquis (180 €), the Pudong Shangri-La (150 €), the Kerry Hotel Pudong (129 €), the Grand Hyatt (121 €) and the InterContinental Pudong (86 €).

Jing'an and Nanjing West Road

The commercial district north-west of the centre: Alila Shanghai (350 €), Upper House on Shi Men Yi Road (310 €), The PuLi (238 €), The Sukhothai (231 €), The St. Regis Jingan (225 €), the Jing An Shangri-La (201 €), the Portman Ritz-Carlton (174 €) and the JW Marriott at Tomorrow Square (166 €).

Xintiandi, Xuhui and Hongqiao

Capella Shanghai Jian Ye Li in Xuhui (590 €), Andaz ITC on Hongqiao Road (221 €), the Sofitel Hongqiao (198 €), Andaz Xintiandi (179 €), The Langham Xintiandi (177 €) and The Anandi near Hongqiao (144 €).

Qiantan, in southern Pudong

A newer district with four of our houses: the Waldorf Astoria Qiantan (287 €), the Shangri-La Qiantan (191 €), Thompson Shanghai Expo (172 €) and the Kimpton Qiantan (159 €).

Four properties sit well outside the city and should be chosen on purpose rather than by price. The Cordis Shanghai Seaworld (73 €) is among our least expensive addresses here but stands at Wusongkou, far to the north. InterContinental Shanghai Harbour City (110 €) is out at Lingang by the coast, InterContinental Wonderland (162 €) is in Songjiang to the south-west, and the Shanghai Snow World Hotel (87 €) is in Nanhui New Town. All four are an hour or more from the Bund, and none of them is a city base.

What a luxury hotel in Shanghai costs

The median entry rate is around 194 € across 46 properties. That puts Shanghai above Beijing (roughly 193 €), Bangkok (180 €) and Jakarta (148 €), and below Hong Kong (245 €) and Seoul (269 €) – broadly in the middle of our Asian range, but with a far wider spread than any of them.Regent Shanghai PudongRegent Shanghai Pudong · LujiazuiWhat makes Shanghai worth reading carefully is the density of the middle. More than half the selection starts between 150 € and 300 €, which means the choice here is almost never limited by budget – it is limited by which side of the river you want to be on.

Three rates stand out as genuinely low for what they are. The Grand Hyatt in the Jin Mao Tower at 121 € is the clearest: one of the landmark towers of Lujiazui, on Century Avenue, below the rate of a mid-field city hotel in most European capitals. The Conrad on Nanjing East Road at 108 € and the InterContinental Pudong at 86 € are the others.

At the top, three houses start above 400 €: the Bvlgari (724 €), Capella Jian Ye Li (590 €), the J Hotel in the Shanghai Tower (418 €) and, just under, Bellagio Shanghai (376 €).

Nine loyalty programmes across 46 hotels

Forty-two of our 46 Shanghai properties belong to a hotel programme, spread across ten of them – the widest range of any destination in our Asian portfolio, which is simply a function of the size of the selection.

Marriott Bonvoy leads with eight, then IHG Rewards and World of Hyatt with seven each, the Leaders Club with five, the Shangri-La Golden Circle with four and ALL with three, Hilton Honors with three, and iPrefer, Brilliant by Langham and Fans of Mandarin Oriental making up the rest.

Four properties take part in no loyalty programme: The Peninsula, the Bvlgari, The Sukhothai and Upper House. Three of those four are also among the more expensive houses in the city, which is a pattern worth knowing if points matter to you.

The practical consequence of that spread is that in Shanghai you almost never have to choose between your programme and your district.

Take World of Hyatt: it covers the Grand Hyatt at 121 €, Hyatt on the Bund at 148 €, Thompson Expo at 172 €, Andaz Xintiandi at 179 €, Andaz ITC at 221 €, the Park Hyatt at 268 € and Alila at 350 € – seven houses on both sides of the river and across nearly the whole price range. Marriott Bonvoy and IHG Rewards do much the same.

We hold no guest ratings for any of our Shanghai properties, so unlike some of our other Asian pages there is no rating to point to here. That is a gap rather than a judgement, and our travel advisors will give you a straight answer on any specific house from what they know directly.

Making the most of the largest selection in Asia

Forty-six properties is more choice than most people want, and the honest thing to say is that the size of the list is not itself useful. What is useful is knowing which three or four are right for your trip.Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comAsk via WhatsAppWrite an emailThree questions settle it almost every time. Which side of the river are your days on – the Bund and the old concessions, or Pudong and the towers? How long are you staying, since a first visit and a fifth visit point in opposite directions? And which programme are you in, given that the four largest each have houses across the whole price range here?

For a first visit, the Bund side generally wins: the waterfront, the former concession streets, Xintiandi and Nanjing Road are what people come to see, and being able to walk out into them matters. For business, Lujiazui or Hongqiao usually wins on time saved.

As a suitespot guest you travel with VIP status: we pass your preferences to the hotel before you arrive – in Shanghai most often a high floor and, in the tower properties, a room facing the river rather than inland, since that is the whole point of the view here. On top of that, every property includes breakfast for two, an upgrade subject to availability and up to 100 USD hotel credit.

Because this is our deepest Asian selection, it is also the one where a conversation saves the most time. Tell our travel advisors your dates, your side of the river and your programme, and they will come back with two or three houses rather than a list of forty-six.

Earn points & use your status in Shanghai

suitespot rates are genuine direct rates: you keep earning regular points and elite nights in the hotel's loyalty program and retain your status benefits – on top of your suitespot benefits. These programs are represented in Shanghai:

Frequently asked questions about luxury hotels in Shanghai

How much does a luxury hotel in Shanghai cost?

Entry rates across our 46 Shanghai properties run from about 70 € per night at the Parkyard to 724 € at the Bvlgari, with a median of around 194 €.

That places Shanghai in the middle of our Asian range – above Beijing (roughly 193 €), Bangkok (180 €) and Jakarta (148 €), below Hong Kong (245 €) and Seoul (269 €) – but with a much wider spread than any of them.

Three rates are remarkable for what they are: the Grand Hyatt in the Jin Mao Tower at 121 €, the Conrad on Nanjing East Road at 108 € and the InterContinental Pudong at 86 €. More than half the selection starts between 150 € and 300 €. With suitespot you always book at direct rates, and the benefits worth more than 500 € come on top.

Should I stay on the Bund or in Pudong?

The Bund for a first visit, Pudong for business – and our selection is deep on both sides, so neither choice limits you.

The Bund and the Huangpu waterfront hold around a dozen of our properties, including The Peninsula at No. 32 The Bund (from around 358 €), W Shanghai - The Bund (309 €), The St. Regis on the Bund (292 €), the Waldorf Astoria on the Bund (220 €), the Fairmont Peace Hotel (179 €) and the Conrad (108 €). This is the side for the old city, the former concession streets and the view of the towers.

Lujiazui and central Pudong hold around ten, four of them on Century Avenue: The Ritz-Carlton Pudong (303 €), the Park Hyatt (268 €), Regent Pudong (189 €) and the Grand Hyatt (121 €). This is the side for the business district, the airport link, and being inside the skyline rather than looking at it.

Which Shanghai hotels are on Century Avenue in Lujiazui?

Four of our properties, and the spread between them is the most useful comparison on this page.

The Ritz-Carlton Pudong stands at No. 8, in the IFC (from around 303 €). The Grand Hyatt is at No. 88, in the Jin Mao Tower (121 €). The Park Hyatt is at No. 100 (268 €), and Regent Shanghai Pudong at No. 210 (186 €).

That is 121 € to 303 € on a single avenue, for addresses within minutes of one another. It is the same effect we see on Wireless Road in Bangkok: inside Lujiazui the location premium is close to nothing, so what you are paying for is the house itself and the floor you are on.

The J Hotel in the Shanghai Tower (418 €), the Mandarin Oriental Pudong (220 €) and the Pudong Shangri-La (150 €) are all a short distance away.

Which luxury hotels in Shanghai are on the Bund?

More than in any comparable district we cover – and seven of them carry it in their own name.

Those are the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund (from around 220 €), Regent Shanghai on the Bund (255 €), W Shanghai - The Bund (309 €), The St. Regis on the Bund (292 €), Banyan Tree Shanghai on the Bund (229 €), Hyatt on the Bund (148 €) and Sofitel Shanghai North Bund (111 €).

The Peninsula does not need the suffix – its address is simply No. 32 The Bund (358 €). Nearby on the same waterfront stretch are the Bvlgari on North Henan Road (724 €), The Shanghai EDITION (285 €), the Fairmont Peace Hotel on Nanjing Road East (179 €) and the Conrad (108 €).

No other district in our portfolio is used as a brand suffix this consistently, which tells you what the waterfront is worth.

Do I earn points and can I use my status with suitespot?

At 40 of our 46 Shanghai properties, across nine different programmes – the widest spread of any destination in our Asian portfolio.

Marriott Bonvoy leads with eight, IHG Rewards and World of Hyatt have seven each, the Leaders Club five, ALL and the Shangri-La Golden Circle four each, Hilton Honors three, and iPrefer, Brilliant by Langham and Fans of Mandarin Oriental the remainder.

The useful consequence is that you rarely have to choose between your programme and your district. World of Hyatt alone runs from the Grand Hyatt at 121 € through Hyatt on the Bund, Thompson Expo, both Andaz houses and the Park Hyatt to Alila at 350 €, on both sides of the river.

Four properties take part in no loyalty programme: The Peninsula, the Bvlgari, The Sukhothai and Upper House.

Which is the most expensive hotel in Shanghai?

In our selection it is the Bvlgari Shanghai on North Henan Road, from around 724 € per night, followed by Capella Shanghai Jian Ye Li in Xuhui at 590 € and the J Hotel in the Shanghai Tower at 418 €. Bellagio Shanghai (376 €), The Peninsula (358 €) and Alila Shanghai (350 €) come next.

Only three properties start above 400 €, out of 46 – so the expensive end is narrow, and the median across the whole selection is around 194 €.

Are any of the Shanghai hotels far from the centre?

Yes – five, and they are worth identifying because two of them carry our lowest rates and would otherwise look like bargains.

The Cordis Shanghai Seaworld (73 €) is among our least expensive addresses in the city but stands at Wusongkou, far to the north. The Shanghai Snow World Hotel (87 €) is in Nanhui New Town, InterContinental Shanghai Harbour City (110 €) is out at Lingang near the coast, InterContinental Wonderland (162 €) is in Songjiang to the south-west, and the Parkyard (70 €) is in the Zhangjiang technology park.

All of them are an hour or more from the Bund. Each has a reason to exist – a theme park, a conference, a tech-park meeting, an early flight – but none of them works as a base for seeing Shanghai. If a rate looks too good against the rest of the list, check the district first.

When is the best time to visit Shanghai?

Late September to early December is the best stretch of the year: dry, clear and comfortable, with the humidity gone. March to May is the second window, warm and green but wetter.

Summer is hot and very humid, with the heaviest rain in June and July and the risk of typhoons into September. Winter is cold and damp rather than freezing – manageable, but grey, and the waterfront is exposed.

The calendar moves availability more than the weather does. Chinese New Year empties the business districts and fills the sights, the National Day golden week at the start of October does both at once, and Shanghai's trade fair season can take the whole city's hotel stock at short notice. Give our travel advisors your dates and they will tell you plainly if you have landed on one of those weeks.
