Why we recommend it: Because it stands on the only rock in the bay and therefore sees what everyone else is looking for: the Indian Ocean on three sides, the mountains behind, the beach below. In 1988 Liz McGrath made this out of the old Lookout Hotel, with 35 rooms, 12 of them suites, and two villas – the third hotel of her collection beside the Cellars-Hohenort in Cape Town and the Marine in Hermanus. Dinner is at Amelia’s, the seafood restaurant with the terrace over the water, and at the Sandbar; add the Fresh Wellness Spa and two pools, one heated. The readers of Condé Nast Traveler voted it the best hotel in South Africa in 2025. Our recommended category is called King Luxury Sea View.

The categories: 30 square metres in the Room, 37 in the Luxury Room with a view, 48 in the Suite with partial ocean view, 50 in the Premier Suite with sea view, 150 in the Beach House and 190 in the Lookout Villa. The spread is that of a hotel offering rooms and villas at once.
That means: our recommended category, the Luxury Room at 37, is called Sea View by name – but the name alone does not guarantee the ocean. Two categories expressly face the ocean: the Suite at 48 partially and the Premier Suite at 50 fully. Anyone wanting the bay from the bed books the 50.
Then the two large categories: the Beach House at 150 and the Lookout Villa at 190 square metres – for families arriving in December with half of Johannesburg. Our travel advisors will tell you what view they offer.
The package: breakfast, 50 US dollars of credit, upgrade on arrival, early check-in and late check-out – with a two-night minimum stay.
Our advice: Book the Premier Suite at 50 if it has to be the ocean – and the Luxury Room at 37 if it has to be the hotel. Between the two lie 13 square metres and the sea view; the upgrade on arrival sometimes bridges them. And ask about the calendar: an early-winter closure is possible – our travel advisors know the state of things.
Where to stay in Plettenberg Bay: on the rocks above Central Beach
The Plettenberg Hotel stands at 40 Church Street in Plettenberg Bay, on the rocks above Central Beach – three hundred metres from the beach, six kilometres from the Robberg Nature Reserve, thirty from Knysna and a good ninety from George airport.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone wanting to stop the Garden Route at its most beautiful point – and for anyone who would rather watch whales from the breakfast table than from a boat.
What lies within reach: Central Beach and Lookout Beach below the hotel, on foot; Robberg, the peninsula with the circular trail over the cliffs and the seal colony, ten minutes by car; and Tsitsikamma with the Storms River and the suspension bridges, an hour.
For orientation: George airport lies an hour and a half to the west, Port Elizabeth two and a half to the east; from Cape Town it is six hours along the Garden Route. In Plett one drives; the hotel is the reason to leave the car standing now and then.
