Our recommendation is therefore for anyone taking Dar es Salaam as a stop – before the safari, before Zanzibar, after the flight – and wanting to stay on the water rather than in the office districts.
What is within reach: the ferry terminal to Zanzibar, a few minutes on foot; the Kivukoni fish market, the liveliest place in the city in the morning; and the National Museum with the finds from Olduvai Gorge, ten minutes inland. The Botanical Gardens are right next to it.
For orientation: Julius Nyerere airport is a good half hour to the southwest – markedly more in rush hour. The ferry to Zanzibar takes about two hours, the flight twenty minutes.
