Your guide to the best hotels in Cologne, Germany

Cologne is a four-house city in our portfolio, and that makes the choice unusually clear: 4 hand-picked hotels, each with a different emphasis, from the Excelsior Hotel Ernst directly at the cathedral to the 25hours Hotel The Circle in the Friesenviertel. Entry rates run from around 100 € to 260 € per night, at a median of about 140 € – below Munich, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Berlin. And a detail worth noting: all four belong to a different loyalty programme, with none repeated.Excelsior Hotel Ernst CologneExcelsior Hotel Ernst Cologne · InnenstadtWith every booking through suitespot you receive a comprehensive package of suitespot benefits:
  • Complimentary breakfast for two
  • Room upgrade subject to availability
  • Up to 100 USD hotel credit per stay
  • Early check-in and late check-out subject to availability
  • Standard points and status benefits in the hotel programmes

The Excelsior Hotel Ernst stands on the Domplatz, directly beside the cathedral and a few steps from the main station. At around 269 € per night it is both the dearest and, at 4,6, our best-rated house in the city, and it belongs to the Leaders Club.

The Köln Marriott Hotel on the St. Johannisstraße (138 €) is also within a few minutes of the station, in Altstadt-Nord, and belongs to Marriott Bonvoy. The Hyatt Regency Köln (155 €) sits across the river on the Kennedy-Ufer in Deutz – which means it is the house with the view of the cathedral rather than the one beside it – and belongs to World of Hyatt.

And the 25hours Hotel Köln The Circle (105 €) brings design hotel-keeping to the Friesenviertel, the going-out quarter west of the old town. It is the lowest entry rate in our Cologne selection and belongs to ALL.

Suite hotels in Cologne: which houses run their own suites

With four houses the suite question can be answered exactly: three of the four run their own suite categories, and each does it differently.Cologne Marriott HotelCologne Marriott Hotel · Altstadt-NordThe Excelsior Hotel Ernst (269 €) goes from the Junior Suite through the Executive Suite to the eponymous Excelsior Suite as its top category. The Köln Marriott Hotel (138 €) runs Executive, Grand Executive and the Dom Suite – the name is the point. And the Hyatt Regency Köln (155 €) has Regency, Regency Executive and Presidential suites.Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comAsk via WhatsAppWrite an emailThe exception is the 25hours Hotel The Circle (105 €), which carries no separate suite categories in our data – its concept is deliberately more informal, and the rate reflects that.

The practical consequence: if a suite is what you want, the choice in Cologne is genuinely between three houses at 138 €, 155 € and 269 € – and the cheapest of the three is the one with the cathedral in the category name.

Our travel advisors' insider tip

Three things about Cologne.

First the side of the river. The best view of the cathedral is not from the hotel next to it but from across the water: the Hyatt Regency Köln on the Kennedy-Ufer in Deutz looks straight at the cathedral and the old town. If the postcard view matters to you, that is the address – and the walk over the Hohenzollern bridge takes about ten minutes.

Second the trade fairs. Cologne is one of Germany's busiest trade fair cities, and during the big fairs the rates in all four houses move sharply and availability tightens. If your dates are flexible at all, check them against the fair calendar first – our travel advisors will do that with you.

Third the programmes, which is where Cologne is genuinely unusual: four houses, four different programmes, none repeatedLeaders Club (Excelsior), World of Hyatt (Hyatt Regency), Marriott Bonvoy (Köln Marriott) and ALL (25hours). Whichever of the four you hold status in, there is exactly one house here where it counts.

5-star hotels in Cologne by area: the best locations

Cologne is compact, and with four houses the geography comes down to three positions.Hyatt Regency CologneHyatt Regency Cologne · DeutzThese three areas cover the whole selection.

By the cathedral and the main station – the most central address

The Excelsior Hotel Ernst (269 €) stands on the Domplatz itself, and the Köln Marriott Hotel (138 €) on the St. Johannisstraße a few minutes away. Both are within walking distance of the main station, which makes them the obvious choice if you are arriving by train or have appointments in the old town.

Deutz and the Rhine bank – the side with the view

The Hyatt Regency Köln (155 €) sits on the right bank at the Kennedy-Ufer, directly opposite the old town. This is the side with the view: the cathedral, the Hohenzollern bridge and the old town front are all in it. About ten minutes on foot over the bridge, and the closest of the four to the exhibition grounds.

Friesenviertel – design and going out

The 25hours Hotel Köln The Circle (105 €) is in the Klapperhof, in the Friesenviertel west of the old town – the going-out quarter, with the bars and restaurants at the door. The lowest entry rate in our selection, and the most informal concept of the four.

Dining: eating in the hotel

With four houses it is worth being specific rather than general about eating in.25hours Hotel Köln The Circle25hours Hotel Köln The Circle · Altstadt-NordThe Excelsior Hotel Ernst (269 €) is the classical address of the four and the one where dining in the hotel is a reason to stay rather than a fallback – a house on the Domplatz with a formal restaurant tradition. The Hyatt Regency (155 €) plays its river position, with terrace dining looking at the old town front in the warmer months.

The 25hours The Circle (105 €) works the other way round: the concept is deliberately informal, and its real advantage is that the Friesenviertel is outside the door – the highest concentration of bars and restaurants in the city, none of which needs a reservation weeks ahead.

And a Cologne-specific point that no hotel restaurant replaces: the Brauhäuser of the old town, where Kölsch is served in 0,2-litre glasses by waiters who keep count on the beer mat. From the Excelsior and the Marriott they are a few minutes on foot; from Deutz it is the bridge.

Spacious rooms and families in Cologne

Only one of the four houses carries a family category: the Köln Marriott Hotel (138 €) in Altstadt-Nord. If you are travelling with children, that is the starting point – and at 138 € it is also the second-lowest rate in the selection.

For space without a family category, the route is the suite. The Köln Marriott runs Executive, Grand Executive and the Dom Suite; the Hyatt Regency (155 €) Regency, Regency Executive and Presidential; the Excelsior Hotel Ernst (269 €) Junior, Executive and the Excelsior Suite.

The 25hours The Circle (105 €) carries no separate suite categories, so for a larger room it is not the house.

Tell our travel advisors how many people are travelling and how old the children are. These categories are limited in a four-house city, and they are not always visible in the booking engines – we check what is actually open for your dates.

What a stay in Cologne costs

Entry rates in our four Cologne houses start at around 100 € per night at the 25hours Hotel The Circle and reach about 260 € per night at the Excelsior Hotel Ernst beside the cathedral – depending on season, room category and availability. The median entry rate is around 140 € per night.Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comAsk via WhatsAppWrite an emailThat puts Cologne noticeably below the other large German cities we cover: Munich sits at a median of about 325 €, Düsseldorf at 195 €, Hamburg at 180 € and Berlin at 173 €. Cologne is the most affordable of them.

The one thing that moves those rates sharply is the trade fair calendar. During the big fairs all four houses are dearer and tighter; outside them, Cologne is an unusually good-value city break.

Between the houses the spread is straightforward: 25hours The Circle 105 €, Köln Marriott 138 €, Hyatt Regency 155 € and Excelsior Hotel Ernst 269 €. The Excelsior is both the dearest and, at 4,6, the best-rated.

As a suitespot guest you travel with VIP status: we pass your preferences to the hotel before arrival – in Cologne most often a room facing the cathedral, which in the Hyatt Regency in Deutz is a category of its own. On top of that, at every house: breakfast for two, a room upgrade subject to availability and up to 100 USD hotel credit.

And because the four houses sit in four different programmes, your status counts at exactly one of them – whichever it is. Give us your membership number when you book and we will make sure it is on the reservation.

Frequently asked questions about luxury hotels in Cologne

How much does a 5-star hotel in Cologne cost?

Entry rates in our four Cologne houses start at around 100 € per night (25hours Hotel The Circle) and reach about 260 € per night at the Excelsior Hotel Ernst beside the cathedral. The median entry rate is around 140 €.

That makes Cologne the most affordable of the large German cities we cover – Munich sits at a median of about 325 €, Düsseldorf at 195 €, Hamburg at 180 € and Berlin at 173 €.

The exception is the trade fair calendar: during the big fairs all four houses are noticeably dearer and availability tightens. With suitespot you always book at direct rates, and the benefits worth more than 500 € come on top.

Which hotels in Cologne have their own suites?

Three of our four. The Excelsior Hotel Ernst (269 €) runs the Junior Suite, the Executive Suite and the eponymous Excelsior Suite as its top category.

The Köln Marriott Hotel (138 €) has Executive, Grand Executive and the Dom Suite – the name is the point – and the Hyatt Regency Köln (155 €) Regency, Regency Executive and Presidential suites.

The 25hours Hotel The Circle (105 €) carries no separate suite categories in our data; its concept is deliberately more informal.

Which means the real choice for a suite in Cologne is between three houses at 138 €, 155 € and 269 € – and the cheapest of the three is the one with the cathedral in the category name.

Do I earn points and can I use my status when booking with suitespot?

In Cologne, yes – and here the situation is unusual: all four houses belong to a different programme, with none repeated.

The Excelsior Hotel Ernst is in the Leaders Club, the Hyatt Regency Köln in World of Hyatt, the Köln Marriott Hotel in Marriott Bonvoy and the 25hours Hotel The Circle in ALL.

We book at direct rates, so points and nights continue to accrue and your status is recognised as normal. Whichever of the four programmes you hold status in, there is exactly one house in Cologne where it counts – so tell us which one when you enquire, and we will start there.

Which 5-star hotel in Cologne has the best view?

The Hyatt Regency Köln (155 €) – and for a reason worth understanding: the best view of the cathedral is not from the hotel beside it but from across the river.

The Hyatt Regency sits on the right bank at the Kennedy-Ufer in Deutz, directly opposite the old town, so the cathedral, the Hohenzollern bridge and the old town front are all in the outlook. The walk over the bridge into the old town takes about ten minutes.

Not every room faces the river – it is a separate and dearer category. Tell our travel advisors before booking and we will register the preference with the hotel.

If you would rather be at the cathedral than looking at it, the Excelsior Hotel Ernst (269 €) stands on the Domplatz itself.

Which luxury hotel in Cologne suits a romantic stay?

The Excelsior Hotel Ernst (269 €) is the classical answer: a house on the Domplatz, at 4,6 our best-rated in the city, with the Excelsior Suite as its top category and a formal restaurant tradition, so an evening does not have to begin with going out.

The alternative trades the address for the outlook: the Hyatt Regency Köln (155 €) in Deutz, with the cathedral and the old town front across the water, and terrace dining in the warmer months.

Both are worth telling us about in advance. If you are travelling for an occasion, our travel advisors note it with the hotel before arrival – that is what the VIP status is actually for.

Which hotel in Cologne is best for a business trip?

It depends on where your appointments are, and in Cologne that splits cleanly along the river.

For the city centre and the old town, the Köln Marriott Hotel (138 €) on the St. Johannisstraße is the practical choice – a few minutes from the main station, with Executive and Grand Executive suites for working in the room. The Excelsior Hotel Ernst (269 €) is equally central and the more formal address.

For the exhibition grounds, the Hyatt Regency Köln (155 €) in Deutz is on the right side of the river and the closest of the four.

And plan around the trade fair calendar: during the big fairs all four houses are dearer and tighter. Book early, or ask us to check your dates against it.
