Your guide to the best luxury hotel in Saint-Émilion

Saint-Émilion is the village that gives the wine its name and not the other way round: a limestone hill above the Dordogne, a church cut into the rock in the 12th century, a bell tower above it, and all around the châteaux whose names appear on labels. Since 1999 the whole landscape has been World Heritage – the first wine landscape ever.Hotel de PavieHotel de Pavie · MagdeleineFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Saint-Émilion and chose one: a luxury hotel of three buildings in the middle of the village – with categories named after the building, and with a binding booking. What that means for booking is below.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

One luxury hotel in Saint-Émilion – and who it suits

Our choice for Saint-Émilion is the Hotel de Pavie on Rue du Clocher, by the bell tower of the monolithic church. In our ranking it stands at 4.5 out of 5, and a night starts at 287 euros.

Why we recommend it: Because it is the hotel of Château Pavie, a Premier Grand Cru Classé A – and because its restaurant La Table de Pavie holds two Michelin stars, since 2020 under Yannick Alléno with Sébastien Faramond at the stove, with one regional and one plant-based menu. The hotel is spread across three buildings in the village: the Maison du Clocher by the bell tower, the Maison de Village with Roman ceramics and English style, and the Maison des Suites from the 18th century. It belongs to Relais & Châteaux. Our recommended category is called Village House Junior Suite.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

This hotel’s categories are named after the building, not the rank – and the booking is binding.

Thirteen categories, and almost all carry one of two words: Tower or Village. Those are the buildings – the Maison du Clocher by the bell tower and the Maison de Village –, and the sizes follow them: Tower at 30, 35, 35, 40 and 46 square metres, Village at 33, 35, 60, 60 and 61. Added to these are three further categories: 60 square metres, 80 in the Comfort category and 140 in the Prestige category. The Tower category at 40 square metres looks out over the village.

This hotel’s package: breakfast, welcome gift and a coffee machine in the room – a rare extra. The building you book is the building you sleep in – the booking is binding.

Our recommended category is called Village House Junior Suite. This refers to the Village House Suite at 60 or 61 square metres.

And the price: 287 euros is an entry in the mid price range for a luxury hotel. For two stars in the village that is the real news.

Our advice: Choose the building first, then the number. Tower for the bell tower and the village outside the window – the 40 with Village View is the only category promising it. Village for the suites at 60. And tell our travel advisors “Village House Suite”, not “Junior Suite” – and the table at La Table de Pavie at the same time, because two stars in a village of 2,000 are gone faster than the room.

Where to stay in Saint-Émilion: by the bell tower, three buildings in the village

The Hotel de Pavie lies on Rue du Clocher, in the middle of Saint-Émilion, by the bell tower above the monolithic church – with Château Pavie a kilometre and a half down the slope, Libourne station seven kilometres and Bordeaux a good thirty kilometres away.

Our recommendation is therefore for anyone wanting to experience Saint-Émilion as a village – in the evening, when the day visitors have gone – and the châteaux on foot or by bicycle, not by coach.

What lies within reach: the monolithic church beneath the hotel, the largest rock-cut church in Europe, by guided tour only; Château Pavie, whose wine is served in the hotel, twenty minutes on foot through the vines; and Château Ausone and the other Premiers Grands Crus around the hill, all within cycling distance.

For orientation: Saint-Émilion station lies at the foot of the hill, with few trains; Libourne has the TGV, two hours from Paris. Bordeaux-Mérignac airport is an hour away. Nobody drives in the village; the lanes are steep and made of limestone, and luggage comes on foot.

Thirteen categories: the best hotel in Saint-Émilion from the inside

The Hotel de Pavie offers thirteen categories, two of them suites.

In the Tower: 30, 35, 35, 40 and 46 square metres – the 40 with a view of the village.

In the Village: 33 in the room, 35 in the Deluxe room, 60 and 61 in the suites and 60 in one more category.

Without a building word: 60, 80 in the Comfort category and 140 in the Prestige category, the hotel’s largest.

On the view: this hotel’s motif is the bell tower above the village – and the Tower category at 40 faces it explicitly.

What applies equally to every category: breakfast for two, a welcome gift and the coffee machine in the room.

What a night at the luxury hotel in Saint-Émilion costs

A night at the luxury hotel in Saint-Émilion starts at 287 euros.

The suitespot benefits apply here from the first night. Included are: breakfast for two, a welcome gift and the coffee machine in the room.

When it is open: from the end of February to mid-December. The annual closure runs, according to our sources, from 17 December to the end of February.

When it is loveliest: in May and June, when the vines flower and the terraces are open, and in September and October for the harvest, when the village smells of must.

What belongs to Saint-Émilion: the day visitors. From eleven to five the village belongs to the coaches from Bordeaux; before and after, to the guests who sleep here. That is not a warning but the argument for the hotel in the village.

When to ask early: for the harvest in September, for the en primeur weeks in April when the trade comes, and for the Prestige category on any date.

How long to stay: two nights for village, church and two châteaux – three if Bordeaux is added.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

Two stars, Château Pavie and exclusive services in a 5-star hotel

The Libournais is the right bank of the Bordeaux region: Merlot instead of Cabernet, limestone instead of gravel, villages instead of trading firms. Saint-Émilion has been its centre since a Breton monk moved into a cave here in the 8th century – and since 1955 the classification, renewed every ten years, has fixed the rank of the châteaux.

Three things belong to it. First the monolithic church: cut from a single limestone rock, 38 metres long, with the bell tower above it that looks like a church from outside and is not one. Second the macarons of Saint-Émilion: since 1620 to the same recipe of the Ursuline nuns, from almonds, sugar and egg white, without filling. Third Château Pavie itself: the south-facing slope with the estate that has belonged to the Perse family since 1998 and rose to the top class in 2012 – open to visit, with the hotel as the key.

The package at this hotel is breakfast, gift and coffee machine.

What our travel advisors arrange most often: the table at La Table de Pavie, because two stars are the reason for the trip, the visit to Château Pavie, because it goes through the hotel, and the building by name – for the reason stated above.
