Castle hotels in Ireland: your guide to castles and manor houses

Castle hotels in Ireland are almost never in town. They sit on their own estates: on the shores of lakes such as Lough Corrib, on rivers such as the Liffey, the Nore and the Maigue, in the landscape of the Burren or in the woods of Connemara. The oldest walls in this selection date from 1180 and 1228, while most of the manor houses were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. A stay often includes things no city hotel can offer: falconry and archery on the grounds, fishing on the estate's own river, a golf course on the doorstep and a whiskey by the fire in the evening.Ashford CastleAshford Castle Β· Cong Electoral DivisionWhich house suits you depends on how you want to experience history. If you want to stay in a true medieval castle, book Ashford Castle: its walls go back to 1228, the Guinness family enlarged it in Victorian style in the late 19th century, and Lough Corrib lies right outside the windows. For golfers and food lovers, Adare Manor is our first choice: a neo-Gothic manor with 365 windows, Michelin-starred dining at The Oak Room and a course by Tom Fazio.

For families we recommend Dromoland Castle on Lough Dromoland: the O'Brien castle has a kids club, babysitting and a leisure center with a 17 m pool. And if a great tasting menu is the reason for your trip, stay at Castlemartyr Resort in East Cork, where Lewis Barker runs Terre in the manor house, a restaurant with two Michelin stars.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

Castle, ancestral seat or manor house: the history of castle hotels in Ireland

In Ireland, “Castle” in the name doesn't always mean a castle. Gregans Castle Hotel, for example, is a manor house from 1750, and at Castlemartyr Resort it was a castle that gave the village of Castlemartyr its name; its ruins still stand on the grounds next to the manor house. Broadly, the twelve houses in this selection fall into three groups: medieval castles, later castles and manor houses that noble and merchant families built as country seats.Gregans Castle HotelGregans Castle Hotel Β· Co. ClareMedieval castles: Kilkea Castle Castledermot was built in 1180 for the Norman knight Walter de Riddlesford and from 1273 belonged to the FitzGeralds for more than seven centuries. After a five-year restoration the castle has welcomed guests again since 2017/2018, and at Restaurant 1180 you dine within the old walls. Ashford Castle dates back to 1228. In 1852 it passed to Sir Benjamin Guinness, and from 1875 the family enlarged it in Victorian style; it has been a hotel since 1939. During the restoration that began in 2013, all 820 windows were replaced and the lead roof renewed.Dromoland CastleDromoland Castle Β· Newmarket EDCastles and ancestral seats: Dromoland Castle is the ancestral seat of the O'Briens. The present castle was built by the architects James and George Richard Pain in the early 19th century, and it has been a hotel since 1963. The octagonal Cocktail Bar beneath the round tower was once the library and study of Lord Inchiquin. Ballynahinch Castle Connemara was the principal seat of the Martin family; in 1924 the cricketer-prince Ranjitsinhji bought the estate and landscaped its gardens and fisheries. The castle has been a hotel since 1946.

18th-century manor houses: Carton House A Fairmont Hotel was the seat of the FitzGeralds, Earls of Kildare and Dukes of Leinster, for more than 700 years. Richard Cassels designed the present Palladian house in 1739, and Richard Morrison enlarged it from 1815. At Mount Juliet Estate, Somerset Hamilton Butler, later the first Earl of Carrick, built the Georgian Manor House above the River Nore for his wife Juliet in 1757. A EUR 8 million restoration in 2026 increased the number of suites in the Manor from 8 to 24.

19th-century manor houses: Adare Manor was the seat of the Earls of Dunraven. From 1832 the 2nd Earl and Lady Caroline transformed Adare House into a neo-Gothic manor, completed in the 1860s; its limestone facade counts 365 windows and 52 chimneys. Works in 2016 and 2017 restored the facade, the roofs and the stained glass of the Gallery. At The K Club, Bordeaux wine merchant Hugh Barton began Straffan House in 1832, modeled on a French chateau.

Country houses with a story: Ballymaloe House Hotel Shanagarry grew up around a 15th-century FitzGerald castle. Myrtle and Ivan Allen bought the estate as a farm in 1947/48, and in 1964 Myrtle Allen opened her restaurant here. At The Lodge at Ashford Castle you stay in the white-washed house built in 1865 for the manager of the Ashford estate.

Sleep in the historic house

If you want to stay in the old building, check the room category. At Mount Juliet Estate, only 31 of the 124 rooms are in the Georgian Manor House; the other 93 are in the contemporary Hunter's Yard. The K Club added a new west wing with 70 rooms in 2015, and Adare Manor a new wing in matching style in 2017. Our travel advisors will tell you which categories are in the historic house.

Where to stay? Castle hotels in Ireland from Lough Corrib to East Cork

The twelve houses are spread across four regions. Which one suits you also depends on whether you fly into Dublin, Shannon, Knock or Cork, and how much time you want to spend on the road. The Lodge at Ashford CastleThe Lodge at Ashford Castle Β· Cong Electoral DivisionMayo and Galway: On the shores of Lough Corrib, a 15-minute walk from the village of Cong, Ashford Castle stands on a 350-acre estate; Knock airport is 45 minutes away. On the same grounds, The Lodge at Ashford Castle looks out over the lake. Further west, in the heart of Connemara near Recess and the Twelve Bens, Ballynahinch Castle Connemara lies on 700 acres of woodland, rivers and lakes.Adare ManorAdare Manor Β· Adare South EDClare and Limerick: Adare Manor sits beside the River Maigue at the edge of Adare village, with views of Desmond Castle and the Augustinian Friary; the nearest international airport is Shannon. About 15 minutes from Shannon, Dromoland Castle stands on Lough Dromoland near Newmarket-on-Fergus. In the Burren, on the Wild Atlantic Way, Gregans Castle Hotel lies 5 km south of Ballyvaughan, with views to Galway Bay and 20 minutes from the Cliffs of Moher.

Kildare, close to Dublin: Carton House A Fairmont Hotel lies within the walled Carton Demesne at Maynooth, about 23 km west of Dublin. The K Club in Straffan on the River Liffey is about 40 minutes from Dublin city center and the airport. Around an hour from Dublin, Kilkea Castle Castledermot sits in the south of County Kildare among gardens, woodland and the River Greese.

Also in East Cork, near Shanagarry, Ballymaloe House Hotel Shanagarry sits on a 300-acre working farm about 40 minutes from Cork.

The west coast from Shannon

For a trip along the west coast, Shannon airport is well placed: Dromoland Castle is about 15 minutes away, Ashford Castle about 90 minutes, and Gregans Castle Hotel arranges transfers from Shannon on request. That way you can combine the Burren, the Cliffs of Moher and Lough Corrib in one trip; our travel advisors will plan the nights at each house for you.

Golf, spa, falconry and fishing: what a castle hotel in Ireland offers

For golfers we recommend Adare Manor: Tom Fazio completely redesigned the course, which hosts the Ryder Cup in 2027. The K Club has two Arnold Palmer championship courses that hosted the 2006 Ryder Cup and several Irish Opens. Dromoland Castle also has an 18-hole championship course on its estate, and so does Castlemartyr Resort, where Ron Kirby designed the inland links. The K ClubThe K Club Β· StraffanFalconry and archery are on the program at several houses. Ashford Castle adds horse riding and fishing, and Dromoland Castle paddle boarding on Lough Dromoland. Our pick for anglers is Ballynahinch Castle Connemara: on the estate's salmon and sea-trout fishery you learn fly fishing with a guide. If you love riding, Mount Juliet Estate has its own equestrian center, plus complimentary bikes for exploring the estate.

For spa days we recommend Adare Manor: the spa uses 111SKIN treatments, and The Padel Club has a 17 m pool with an infinity edge. Castlemartyr Resort offers an ESPA spa with two couples' suites and a 20 m indoor pool. At The K Club, you swim in the 16.5 m pool of the K Spa and then relax in the outdoor Canadian hot tub.

Dining at castle hotels in Ireland: Michelin stars and historic dining rooms

For a special tasting menu we recommend Castlemartyr Resort: in the manor house, Executive Chef Lewis Barker cooks at Terre with Irish produce, a restaurant awarded two Michelin stars. The evening begins with champagne and snacks at the chef's table in the open kitchen. At Adare Manor, Head Chef Michael Tweedie serves seasonal tasting menus at The Oak Room, the oak-paneled original family dining room, awarded one Michelin star.Castlemartyr ResortCastlemartyr Resort Β· CastlemartyrTwo restaurants in 18th-century manor houses also hold one Michelin star each. At Mount Juliet Estate, John Kelly cooks modern Irish cuisine with estate produce at Lady Helen, whose cellar holds more than 130 wines and champagnes. At Carton House A Fairmont Hotel, Head Chef Killian Bowen runs The Morrison Room, the 1815 dining room with carved marble fireplaces and ornate ceilings.

Dining in historic rooms: At Ashford Castle you dine in the George V Dining Room beneath Waterford Crystal chandeliers; the Guinness family created the room for a visit by the Prince of Wales in 1905. At Dromoland Castle, Kevin Fleming has been cooking since June 2026 at the Earl of Thomond, part of Lord Inchiquin's former library. At Ballynahinch Castle Connemara, The Owenmore Restaurant serves West Coast fish and game overlooking the river.

Cooking from the land: At Ballymaloe House Hotel Shanagarry, dinner is a five-course menu with produce from the estate's own farm, served across seven dining rooms including the historic Yeats Room, and it ends with the dessert trolley, a fixture since the 1960s. The Executive Chef is Dervilla O'Flynn. At Gregans Castle Hotel, Jonathan Farrell cooks a six-course menu with vegetables from the organic garden and Burren lamb, beef and game.

At no extra cost: you pay the same rate as booking direct with the hotel – the suitespot benefits come on top, free of charge.

An evening at the bar: At Adare Manor, The Tack Room, a cellar-style bar, holds more than 100 rare whiskeys. The Castle Wine Cellars at Ashford Castle occupy a converted underground tunnel with about 3,000 bottles from more than 12 countries. And at Carton House A Fairmont Hotel you taste whiskey in the Whiskey Library, the house's original library, with no more than eight guests.

Michelin Keys: Adare Manor holds three Keys, Ashford Castle two, and Dromoland Castle and Castlemartyr Resort one each. Michelin Keys recognize hotels, not restaurants.

Book your table early

The Oak Room at Adare Manor opens Wednesday to Sunday; The Morrison Room at Carton House A Fairmont Hotel serves dinner only Thursday to Saturday, for guests aged 16 and over.
