Your guide to the best luxury hotels in Wellington

Wellington is the simplest booking in our New Zealand selection. We feature 2 hotels, they sit around 580 metres apart in Wellington Central, and they are priced within two euros of each other. The decision here is genuinely not about location or budget – it is about which programme you earn in and what you want from the room.Sofitel WellingtonSofitel Wellington · CentralEvery booking through suitespot comes with a comprehensive package of suitespot benefits:
  • Complimentary breakfast for two
  • Room upgrade subject to availability
  • Up to USD 100 hotel credit per stay
  • Early check-in & late check-out subject to availability
  • Regular points & status benefits in the hotel loyalty programs

The InterContinental Wellington at 2 Grey Street starts at around EUR 137 a night and runs on IHG Rewards. The Sofitel Wellington at 11 Bolton Street starts at around EUR 139 and runs on ALL. Both are around 5 to 6 kilometres from Wellington airport.

Two things separate them in practice. The InterContinental has by far the deeper room list – 26 entries against seven – and it currently offers a free third night. The Sofitel answers with club lounge access on two of its categories. On ratings we hold one from our own stay: the InterContinental Wellington stands at 3.9, the lowest score we record anywhere in this region, and we would rather tell you that than leave it out.

Two hotels, 580 metres apart: what actually differs

When two properties are this close and this similarly priced, the useful comparison is what you can book rather than where you sleep.InterContinental WellingtonInterContinental Wellington · CentralThe InterContinental Wellington lists 26 room entries, which is a lot for a two-hotel city. The ladder runs Standard, Classic, Superior, Deluxe and Premium, each available with a city view or a harbour view, plus a Deluxe Executive, a Premium with a jetted bath and a Presidential at the top. If you want to specify the outlook and the tier separately, this is the address where that is possible.Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comAsk via WhatsAppWrite an emailThe Sofitel Wellington takes the opposite approach with seven entries: Classic, Superior, Executive and Luxury – and the last two both come with club lounge access. That is the one thing the InterContinental does not offer, and for a business trip with early starts it can matter more than a harbour view.

On the included package, the InterContinental is the stronger of the two: alongside breakfast for two it carries a hotel credit of up to USD 100 per stay, a guaranteed late check-out until 2 pm rather than a subject-to-availability one, a welcome gift and no minimum stay. The Sofitel includes breakfast, the credit, the upgrade, late check-out and a welcome gift.

Where they are: Grey Street and Bolton Street

Both addresses are in Wellington Central, and the distances below are straight-line figures calculated from the hotels’ own coordinates.

The short version: there is no wrong choice of location in Wellington – pick the programme and the room.

2 Grey Street – InterContinental Wellington

From around EUR 137 a night, on IHG Rewards, around 5.3 km from Wellington airport. Twenty-six room entries from Standard to Presidential, with city and harbour views throughout, a guaranteed late check-out until 2 pm and a free third night currently on offer. Our own review stands at 3.9.

11 Bolton Street – Sofitel Wellington

From around EUR 139 a night, on ALL, around 5.9 km from the airport and roughly 580 metres from the InterContinental. Seven room entries, of which the Executive and Luxury categories include club lounge access. We hold no rating of our own for this house.

What we do not have in Wellington

Two hotels is our entire Wellington selection, and both are central business hotels. We feature no lodge, no waterfront resort and nothing outside the centre here – the nearest lodges in our New Zealand portfolio are Otahuna Lodge near Christchurch and the two Rosewood houses on the North Island, all a flight away. If a lodge is what you are after, Wellington is not where our selection can offer it.

The free third night, and what it is worth

The InterContinental Wellington currently offers a free third night. At around EUR 137 a night that is worth roughly EUR 137 on a three-night stay – which in a city where the two properties are two euros apart decides the comparison on its own.

The Sofitel Wellington has no valid offer with us at present; it ran a third-night discount that expired some time ago, and we would rather say so than quote something you cannot book.

Offers and their dates change frequently, and in New Zealand they change faster than the rates. If your dates are movable, send them to us: we will check what applies at the time you want to travel, and we will do the same for Auckland, which is an hour away by air and where our seven properties run from around EUR 101 a night.

What a hotel in Wellington costs

The two properties start at around EUR 137 (InterContinental Wellington) and around EUR 139 a night (Sofitel Wellington). Both carry a published rate with us.

That makes Wellington the least expensive destination in our New Zealand selection after the Cordis Auckland at around EUR 101. Across the country our 21 rated properties run from around EUR 101 to EUR 1,570 with a middle of around EUR 256, and in Auckland the middle sits at around EUR 163. Wellington is below both.

The reason is structural rather than a bargain: our Wellington selection is two central business hotels, and it contains none of the country lodges that pull the New Zealand average upwards. If your trip includes both Wellington and a lodge night elsewhere, budget for the second separately – our eleven New Zealand lodges start between around EUR 735 and 1,570. The rates valid today, including your suitespot benefits, are shown with each hotel below.

The InterContinental goes further on two points: its late check-out is guaranteed until 2 pm rather than subject to availability, and it applies no minimum stay.

As a suitespot guest you travel with VIP status: our advisers register your preferences with the hotel before you arrive. In Wellington the request worth making is the harbour view and the floor at the InterContinental, or the lounge access at the Sofitel – the latter is tied to the category you book rather than to your status alone, so it needs to be in the booking. On ratings, we hold one from our own stay: the InterContinental Wellington at 3.9. For the Sofitel we have none, and we are not going to imply either way.

Frequently asked questions about luxury hotels in Wellington

How much does a luxury hotel in Wellington cost?

Our two Wellington properties start at around EUR 137 a night at the InterContinental Wellington and around EUR 139 at the Sofitel Wellington – two euros apart. That makes Wellington the least expensive destination in our New Zealand selection after the Cordis Auckland at around EUR 101; across the country the middle sits at around EUR 256. Rates change daily; the current ones including your suitespot benefits are shown in the hotel overview.

Do I earn points and keep my status on suitespot bookings?

Yes, at both. suitespot rates are genuine direct rates: you earn regular points and elite nights and your status benefits stay intact. The InterContinental Wellington runs on IHG Rewards and the Sofitel Wellington on ALL. The suitespot benefits – breakfast for two, a hotel credit of up to USD 100 per stay, the upgrade, late check-out and a welcome gift – come on top of your status benefits.

Which of the two Wellington hotels should I book?

They are around 580 metres apart and two euros apart, so it comes down to two things. Book the InterContinental Wellington if you want choice and a longer stay: 26 room entries with city and harbour views, a guaranteed late check-out until 2 pm, and a free third night currently on offer. Book the Sofitel Wellington if you want club lounge access, which its Executive and Luxury categories include and the InterContinental does not offer. Whichever programme you earn in should settle any remaining doubt.

Which Wellington hotel has a harbour view?

The InterContinental Wellington. Its categories name the outlook explicitly – Deluxe and Premium are available with a harbour view as well as a city view, and there is a Presidential at the top of the list. The Sofitel Wellington sorts its seven categories by tier rather than by outlook. As always, the category name gives the direction but not the floor; tell us if the view is the reason for the booking and we will request the height.

Is there a current offer for Wellington?

Yes, one: the InterContinental Wellington currently offers a free third night. At around EUR 137 a night that is worth roughly a third of a three-night stay, which in a city where the two hotels are two euros apart effectively settles the comparison. The Sofitel Wellington has no valid offer with us at present. Offers change frequently – send us your dates and we will confirm what applies.

Do you have lodges or resorts in Wellington?

No. Our Wellington selection is two central business hotels, and it contains no lodge, no waterfront resort and nothing outside the centre. Our eleven New Zealand lodges – among them three Rosewood houses, Blanket Bay and Otahuna Lodge – are all elsewhere in the country and start between around EUR 735 and 1,570 a night. If a lodge is part of your plan, we will build it into the itinerary around Wellington rather than in it.

How far is Wellington airport from the hotels?

The InterContinental Wellington is around 5.3 kilometres away and the Sofitel Wellington around 5.9 kilometres, both straight-line figures calculated from the hotels’ own coordinates. The two are around 580 metres from each other, so the transfer time barely differs. Wellington airport takes mostly domestic and short-haul flights, so arrivals here are less likely to land before check-in than in Auckland.

What rating do you give the Wellington hotels?

We hold one rating from our own stays: the InterContinental Wellington at 3.9. That is the lowest score we record anywhere in Australia, New Zealand or the island destinations, and we would rather show it than leave it out. For the Sofitel Wellington we have no rating of our own, which is not a judgement in either direction. If the score matters to your decision, ask us – our advisers can tell you what sits behind it.
