Spa hotels in Austria: your guide to wellness days between mountains and lakes

The best spa hotels in Austria sit where slowing down comes naturally: on Tyrol’s high plateaus, in the valleys of the Salzburg region and on the shores of Lake Wörthersee and Lake Fuschl. What links the houses in this selection is a spa that goes far beyond a sauna and a quiet room: sauna villages with Tyrolean parlour saunas and stone pine, an open-air brine pool, a heated lake pool in the Wörthersee and infinity pools facing peaks and water. Many keep family and adult areas apart, and some only open their saunas to guests aged 15 or 16 and over.DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort GrossarlDAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort Grossarl · St. Johann im PongauWhich house suits you depends on the occasion. For families who still want calm, we recommend DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort Grossarl: its Mountain Spa spreads over 7,000 m² on five floors, with separate family and adults-only areas. Couples book Rosewood Schloss Fuschl, a hunting castle from 1461 on its own peninsula, whose heated infinity pool looks out over the lake.

If you want your spa by the water, stay at Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden right on Lake Wörthersee, where private spa suites with their own sauna belong to the Acquapura Lake SPA. Food lovers head for Spa Hotel Jagdhof Neustift in the Stubai Valley: for the 3,000 m² jSPA and the Hubertusstube, which holds a Michelin star under chef Alban Pfurtscheller.

No booking fee: through suitespot, the same rate costs exactly what it costs direct with the hotel – and the benefits come on top.

Where to stay? The regions of Austria’s spa hotels – from Tyrol to Lake Neusiedl

Wellness in this selection spreads across six Austrian states, with most houses in the mountains of Tyrol and the Salzburg region. If you are after snow, mountain air and summit views, choose the Alpine valleys; if you want to swim and lie by the shore, pick one of the lakes in Carinthia or the Salzkammergut.Interalpen-Hotel TyrolInteralpen-Hotel Tyrol · BuchenOn the Seefeld Plateau in Tyrol, two large spa resorts sit at 1,200 to 1,300 meters. The Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol stands in a secluded spot in Telfs-Buchen, the Alpin Resort Sacher Seefeld in its own park a few minutes’ walk from the village center – ideal if you want calm and village life together. Higher still, at 1,550 meters on the Ehrwalder Alm, you stay at eriro Alpine Hide Ehrwald, which you can only reach by cable car.

Around Kitzbühel, the Grand Tirolia Hotel Kitzbühel sits on the edge of town, surrounded by the 18-hole Golf Eichenheim course, while the Kempinski Das Tirol Jochberg stands right on the ski slope in Jochberg. In the Stubai Valley, the Spa Hotel Jagdhof Neustift faces the Stubai Glacier, and in the Zillertal you stay in the middle of Zell am Ziller: Das Posthotel Zell in the Zillertal.

In the Grossarl Valley in the Salzburg region, two houses share the same mountain lift: DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort Grossarl next to the Panoramabahn valley station in Ski amadé, and the Grossarler Hof directly opposite the gondola, about eight minutes’ walk from the village center.

On Lake Fuschl in the Salzkammergut, about 25 minutes by car from Salzburg, Rosewood Schloss Fuschl occupies a private peninsula on the west shore. Above the lake stands the Arabella Jagdhof Resort am Fuschlsee, with a public natural swimming beach at its foot.

On Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia, two castles sit right on the shore: the Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden in the center of Velden, 27 kilometers from Klagenfurt airport, and the Hotel Schloss Seefels Wörthersee in Töschling near Pörtschach, on a castle estate with its own beach and marina.

In Vorarlberg, Severin's - The Alpine Retreat Lech sits quietly on a slope above Lech am Arlberg. Families tend to choose the Falkensteiner Family Hotel Montafon at around 1,000 meters in Latschau above Tschagguns, right at the Golm adventure mountain.

Further east the land flattens out. The Imlauer Hotel Schloss Pichlarn stands on a hill in the Enns Valley in Styria, facing the Grimming massif. And the Vila Vita Pannonia Pamhagen lies on 200 hectares in the Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park in Burgenland, about 85 kilometers from Vienna. You will find all luxury hotels in Austria, including the city addresses, in our guide.

Inside the spa hotels in Austria: spa sizes, saunas and pools compared

Spa areas in this selection range from around 400 m² to 7,000 m². Size is not everything, though: small houses focus on a few particularly beautiful pools, the large resorts on entire sauna villages.Alpin Resort Sacher SeefeldAlpin Resort Sacher SeefeldAt 7,000 m² over five floors, the EDELWEISS Mountain Spa at DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort Grossarl is among the largest spas in this selection. Families use the textile saunas on the second floor, adults the textile-free saunas of the Adults Only Spa on the third. Add an indoor-outdoor infinity pool, a 25-meter outdoor pool in the Adults Only Spa and a saltwater pool.

The Interalpen Spa at the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol has a spa area of more than 5,400 m²: an indoor-outdoor panorama pool, a Tyrolean sauna village with textile and textile-free zones, steam baths and a bookable Private Spa. At lunch, the spa restaurant welcomes you in your bathrobe. The Sacher Alpin SPA at the Alpin Resort Sacher Seefeld spreads over 4,700 m², with a Tyrolean parlour sauna, a brine grotto and a textile-free Spa Chalet with panoramic sauna; for swimming there is a 20-meter infinity sports pool and a natural bathing lake with an alpine beach.

At the Imlauer Hotel Schloss Pichlarn, the spa covers 4,500 m², with indoor and outdoor pools at 32 °C, whirlpools at 35 °C and a separate ladies’ sauna. The Acquapura Lake SPA at the Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden has a spa area of 3,600 m², with a garden sauna overlooking the lake and a relaxation room with water loungers and a spa cinema. The Alpine Spa at the Kempinski Das Tirol Jochberg is just as large, and outdoors a 34 °C brine pool with floating loungers awaits.

The jSPA at the Spa Hotel Jagdhof Neustift brings together more than 20 bathing, sauna and relaxation stations on 3,000 m², from the Wilderer sauna and the saltwater inhalation grotto to a tea bar with a tea butler; in 2024 it won the Relais & Châteaux Well-Being Trophy. At the Grand Tirolia Hotel Kitzbühel, the adults-only spa and the family spa add up to almost 3,000 m², plus a 300 m² yoga lounge; the house won the 2025 DACH Spa Award.

By the water, wellness turns into a swim. In the Asaya Spa at Rosewood Schloss Fuschl (1,500 m²) you swim out of the roughly 15-meter indoor pool into the heated infinity pool above the lake and forest. The spa at the Hotel Schloss Seefels Wörthersee is built around natural rock on 1,100 m², with a lake sauna and a brine laconium; in front lies a lake pool in the Wörthersee, heated to up to 28 °C all year round.

Smaller, but full of character: Das Posthotel Zell in the Zillertal has a boutique spa with a garden sauna, Kneipp basin and ice fountain, and its solar-heated stainless-steel garden pool is open all year, at 33 °C in winter with an indoor entry. The spa at Severin's - The Alpine Retreat Lech fits a 12.5-meter indoor pool with counter-current and waterfall into around 400 m² and won the 2026 SPA Star Award in the “Retreat” category. The Erlenreich Relax & SPA at the Grossarler Hof scored 93 points in the Falstaff Spa Guide 2024 and 2025.

The spa at eriro Alpine Hide Ehrwald, at 1,550 meters, is one of a kind: four pools, from the 32 °C infinity pool in the alpine meadow and the underground meditation pool with a singing bowl (36 °C) to an onsen-style pool at 40 °C, plus spruce and Finnish saunas and a hay lounge with infrared and sound loungers.

Treatments, too, carry each house’s signature. The spa at the Alpin Resort Sacher Seefeld works with Augustinus Bader and St. Barth, and since 2025 the Sacher Academy For Better Aging has offered medically supervised longevity programs. DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort Grossarl uses its own natural cosmetics line, the Falkensteiner Family Hotel Montafon offers “Montafon Rituals” and dedicated treatments for children and expectant mothers. At the Grand Tirolia Hotel Kitzbühel, Ayurveda and hammam are on the menu.

For a spa evening for two

Add a private spa. At the Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden, the private spa suites have their own sauna, the Kempinski Das Tirol Jochberg has three private spa suites, and at the Grossarler Hof you can reserve the Private SPA for the evening. The Spa Hotel Jagdhof Neustift has a Private Spa Suite as well as its two-level Spa Chalet. Our travel advisors are happy to check availability when you book.

Calm for couples, space for families: how the spa resorts in Austria differ

You are entirely among adults at eriro Alpine Hide Ehrwald: the nine-suite house welcomes guests aged 14 and over, and children only when the whole house is booked exclusively. At the Hotel Schloss Seefels Wörthersee, the spa is reserved for hotel guests aged 16 and over, and swimwear is optional. At the Spa Hotel Jagdhof Neustift, the Vitality World and Spa Chalet are for guests aged 15 and over, and at the Kempinski Das Tirol Jochberg the saunas are 16+.eriro Alpine Hide Ehrwalderiro Alpine Hide Ehrwald · TyrolWith children, choose a house that keeps the two apart. At DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort Grossarl, the Family Spa and the Adults Only Spa are on different floors. The children’s world of more than 1,000 m² looks after even the youngest, for a fee under age three, and five slides run over three floors in the slide park. The Grand Tirolia Hotel Kitzbühel has its own Grand Family Spa with a children’s pool next to the adults-only spa, plus the KitzKids Lodge for ages three to twelve.

At the Falkensteiner Family Hotel Montafon, the 1,400 m² water world includes an 18-meter outdoor pool at 29 to 31 °C, two indoor pools with slides and a baby pool, while parents retreat to the separate adults-only spa with three saunas. The Falky Land kids’ club looks after children from age three. The Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol has a kids’ club from age three and a teens’ club.

Over two nights, that adds up to around €500 in value on average – depending on hotel, rate and availability.

For a wellness retreat in Austria in any season, pick a house that is open all year: DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort Grossarl and the Spa Hotel Jagdhof Neustift are open 365 days a year, as is the Grand Tirolia Hotel Kitzbühel, though the Grand Alps Spa pools there close for repairs from November 2 to 20, 2026.

Lech is different: Severin's - The Alpine Retreat Lech is a winter house and closed from May to November. The Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol takes a spring break, in 2027 from February 28 to May 4. From March 19, 2027, the Imlauer Hotel Schloss Pichlarn adds a new adults-only area: the LEADING Spa im Berg with an infinity pool, panoramic saunas and ten treatment rooms.

If you want to bathe outdoors in winter

Then choose a house with warm water under the open sky. The lake pool at the Hotel Schloss Seefels Wörthersee is heated to up to 28 °C all year, the garden pool at Das Posthotel Zell in the Zillertal is 33 °C in winter. At the Kempinski Das Tirol Jochberg you float on loungers in the 34 °C brine pool, and at eriro Alpine Hide Ehrwald the onsen-style pool reaches 40 °C.

Food and activities: fine dining, skiing and golf at Austria’s spa resorts

Between two spa sessions, many houses cook at a high level. The Hubertusstube at the Spa Hotel Jagdhof Neustift holds a Michelin star under Alban Pfurtscheller, plus four Gault&Millau toques, and its wine cellar holds more than 20,000 bottles. Richard Hessl has earned three toques at the restaurant La Terrasse at the Hotel Schloss Seefels Wörthersee, with views across the lake.Spa Hotel Jagdhof NeustiftSpa Hotel Jagdhof Neustift · StubaitalBoris Meyer cooks at two-toque level in the restaurant Der Max at the Alpin Resort Sacher Seefeld, with a Tyrolean evening on Fridays and a gala dinner on Saturdays. At the Grossarler Hof, the Jagastub’n serves menus with game from the hotel’s own hunting ground, rated three forks by Falstaff in 2026. And at the Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden, Daniel Gadanecz cooks regional Alpe-Adria cuisine at the Seespitz on the lakeside terrace.

For a ski trip with a spa, three houses sit right on the slopes: the Kempinski Das Tirol Jochberg in Jochberg with its own beginners’ lift, DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort Grossarl at the Panoramabahn in Ski amadé and eriro Alpine Hide Ehrwald on the Ehrwalder Alm, where the ski pass is part of the all-in service. In Lech, a shuttle takes guests of Severin's - The Alpine Retreat Lech to the lifts.

No booking fee: you pay the same price for your rate as for the same rate booked direct with the hotel – suitespot adds no mark-up, and the benefits come on top.

Golfers stay at the Grand Tirolia Hotel Kitzbühel, set right on the 18-hole Golf Eichenheim course, or at the Imlauer Hotel Schloss Pichlarn with its own 18-hole course, named Austria’s Best Golf Hotel at the 2025 World Golf Awards. In summer the lakes beckon: the See Club of Rosewood Schloss Fuschl, built on stilts, offers direct lake access from May to October, and at the Vila Vita Pannonia Pamhagen you can kayak and paddleboard on the resort’s own bathing lake or ride from its own stables.

What usually comes with it: at most houses, daily breakfast for two is included, plus an upgrade on arrival subject to availability. A hotel credit of USD 100 comes with DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort Grossarl and the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol, and at the Kempinski Das Tirol Jochberg it is for food and beverages. On top with suitespot: access to the Asaya Spa and See Club at Rosewood Schloss Fuschl.

Points and status are available at several houses: Leaders Club at the Alpin Resort Sacher Seefeld, for example, I Prefer at the Imlauer Hotel Schloss Pichlarn, GHA Discovery at the Kempinski Das Tirol Jochberg and Marriott Bonvoy at the Arabella Jagdhof Resort am Fuschlsee.

When to go: wellness works at these houses all year round. In summer the lake clubs open, in Fuschl from May to October and in Velden from May to mid-September; in winter the ski-in/ski-out houses sit right on the slopes. If you plan a spring trip, ask about closing periods – the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol, for example, takes a break of several weeks.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

Don’t just compare the room rate. At the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol, half board for two and the transfer to the airport or main station (round trip) are included when you book through suitespot; at the Grossarler Hof and the Falkensteiner Family Hotel Montafon, half board is included too. At eriro Alpine Hide Ehrwald, the all-in rate even covers drinks and the ski pass. That way, the higher nightly rate often makes for the better-value trip.
