What lies within reach: the Valley of the Kings, eight kilometres, with 63 known tombs, Tutankhamun’s among them; Medinet Habu, seven kilometres, the mortuary temple of Ramesses III with reliefs that have kept their colour; and the Colossi of Memnon, seven kilometres, two seated figures 18 metres high that have stood in the same place for 3,400 years.
On arrival: Luxor airport is sixteen kilometres away, on the other side of the Nile. Ferries and bridges connect the banks; the drive takes twenty to forty minutes depending on the route.
