Your guide to the best luxury hotel in Fort Myers

Fort Myers is the city where Thomas Edison and Henry Ford spent their winters: the two estates on the river with the laboratory and the banyan tree still stand, and the royal palms on McGregor Boulevard were planted by Edison. The river is called the Caloosahatchee, is a kilometre wide here, and beyond it lie Sanibel, Captiva and the Gulf of Mexico.Luminary Hotel & Co. Fort MyersLuminary Hotel & Co. Fort Myers · River DistrictFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Fort Myers and chose one: a luxury hotel right on the riverbank in the River District – with categories that look fully or partly onto the river, and a breakfast that comes as a credit. What that means for booking is below.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

One luxury hotel in Fort Myers – and who it suits

Our choice for Fort Myers is the Luminary Hotel & Co. Fort Myers on Edwards Drive, in the River District on the bank of the Caloosahatchee. In our ranking it stands at 3.8 out of 5, and a night starts at 240 euros. The hotel belongs to Marriott Bonvoy.

Why we recommend it: Because it is the hotel that brought downtown Fort Myers back to the river: 243 rooms and suites in a new building on the bank, connected to the Caloosa Sound Convention Center and the marina. There are five ways to eat – at the Silver King Coastal Kitchen with the fish of the Gulf, at Ella Mae’s Diner, at Dean Street Coffee, at Oxbow on the water and at the Beacon Social Drinkery on the roof, where Fort Myers drinks the sunset over the river. The pool sits on the fourth floor with a view of both, river and city. Our recommended category is called King Room Chaise Lounge.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

Nine categories, four with the river – two fully, two partially – and breakfast is a credit.

The rooms: the Chaise Lounge Room with a partial river view, two Rooms, and the Corner Room and the Night Owl Corner Room to the city. Then four suites: the Night Owl Suite to the city, the Studio Suite with a partial river view, and the Balcony and Wet Bar Suite and the Grand Living Dining Suite, both facing the river.

That means: our recommended Chaise Lounge looks partly onto the river. You get a piece of the Caloosahatchee, not the full width. Anyone wanting the whole river books one of the two suites with River View; the Corner Rooms face the city, however fine the corner.

Then the package, and here reading pays: breakfast comes as a credit of 30 US dollars per day, redeemable at Ella Mae’s Diner, at Dean Street Coffee or in the room, for at most two people. Plus 100 US dollars of hotel credit, upgrade on arrival, Bonvoy points, early check-in and late check-out, welcome gift and the assurance that a single night can be booked.

Our advice: Book the Chaise Lounge and read the credit as a diner breakfast. 30 US dollars at Ella Mae’s is breakfast for two, in the room breakfast for one. With 243 rooms and four suite categories the upgrade on arrival is a real chance here – and the Studio Suite is the category where it usually lands.

Where to stay in Fort Myers: on Edwards Drive, right on the Caloosahatchee

The Luminary Hotel & Co. Fort Myers stands at 2200 Edwards Drive in the River District of Fort Myers, right on the Caloosahatchee – one and a half kilometres from the winter estates of Edison and Ford, seventeen from Southwest Florida airport, 23 from Fort Myers Beach and a good thirty from Sanibel.

Our recommendation is therefore for anyone wanting to travel Southwest Florida from a city rather than from a beach – and for anyone who would rather have a downtown with restaurants in the evening than a coast road.

What lies within reach: the River District itself, the old downtown with the brick streets, galleries and the Thursday farmers’ market, at the door; the Edison and Ford Winter Estates with the laboratory, the museum and the banyan tree, twenty minutes on foot along the river; and Sanibel, the island of shells and the Ding Darling refuge, three-quarters of an hour across the causeway.

For orientation: Southwest Florida airport is twenty minutes away, Naples three-quarters of an hour to the south, the Everglades an hour and a half. In Fort Myers one drives; downtown one walks.

Nine categories: the best hotel in Fort Myers from the inside

The Luminary Hotel & Co. Fort Myers offers nine categories, four of them suites – seven with a clear view.

The rooms: the Chaise Lounge Room with partial river view – our recommended category –, the Corner Room and the Night Owl Corner Room to the city and two further Rooms.

The suites: the Balcony and Wet Bar Suite and the Grand Living Dining Suite to the river, the Studio Suite with partial river view and the Night Owl Suite to the city.

On the view: this hotel’s motif is the Caloosahatchee – two categories look fully onto the river, two partially. Three categories face the city.

What applies equally to every category: the breakfast credit of 30 US dollars per day for two, 100 US dollars of hotel credit, the upgrade on arrival subject to availability, Marriott Bonvoy points, early check-in and late check-out subject to availability and a welcome gift.

What a night at the luxury hotel in Fort Myers costs

A night at the luxury hotel in Fort Myers starts at 240 euros.

There is expressly no minimum stay: a single night can be booked. Included are: the breakfast credit of 30 US dollars per day, 100 US dollars of hotel credit, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability, Marriott Bonvoy points, early check-in and late check-out and a welcome gift.

When it is loveliest: from November to April, the dry season, when Florida has 25 degrees and the north freezes – and in February for the Edison Festival of Light, when downtown celebrates for two weeks.

What belongs to the Gulf: hurricane season. From June to November it is humid, there are thunderstorms in the afternoon, and in September a storm can change plans. That is not a warning but the calendar: anyone coming in summer comes for the prices and lives by the pool on the fourth floor.

When to ask early: from January to March, when the snowbirds are here, for the Festival of Light and during spring training of the Red Sox and Twins – and for the two river suites in any case.

How long to stay: two nights for downtown, Edison and the river – three if Sanibel is added.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

243 rooms, a rooftop bar and exclusive services in a 5-star hotel

Southwest Florida is the Gulf coast between Tampa and the Everglades: flat, warm, with islands made of shells and cities twice as big in winter as in summer. Fort Myers is its centre on the river, Naples its address on the sea, Sanibel its beach.

Three things belong to it. First the Edison and Ford Winter Estates: the two estates on the river where Edison wintered from 1886 and Ford moved in next door, with the laboratory in which Edison extracted rubber from goldenrod. Second Sanibel: the island where the shells lie so thick that the collectors invented the “Sanibel stoop”, with the Ding Darling bird refuge. Third the Everglades: the sea of grass to the south, with the alligators on the Tamiami Trail, an hour and a half.

The package at this hotel is breakfast credit, hotel credit, upgrade, points, check-in and check-out and gift.

What our travel advisors arrange most often: the suite with the river, for the reason stated above, the table at the Silver King and the hire car from the airport – because without a car Sanibel stays an island.
