Your guide to the best luxury hotel in La Quinta

La Quinta lies in the Coachella Valley, where the Santa Rosa mountains rise steeply out of the desert. The town owes its name to the hotel, not the other way round: in 1926 Walter H. Morgan built twenty casitas on open land, and out of that came first a retreat for Hollywood and then a city.La Quinta Resort & ClubLa Quinta Resort & ClubFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in La Quinta and chose one: a luxury hotel with an unusually wide choice of rooms and casitas. What that means for booking is below.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

One luxury hotel in La Quinta – and who it suits

Our choice for La Quinta is the La Quinta Resort & Club on Eisenhower Drive. In our ranking it stands at 3.8 out of 5, a night starts at 152 euros, and it belongs to Hilton Honors and the Waldorf Astoria brand.

Why we recommend it: Because it opened on 29 December 1926 with twenty casitas, designed by Gordon Kaufmann in Spanish Colonial and Mission styles – and because it has since grown into a resort of 620 casitas and 98 villas. With it come five golf courses, among them the PGA West courses where the Desert Classic is played in January. Old Town La Quinta is three kilometres away, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden four, Palm Springs airport 24. Our recommended category is called Studio with resort view.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

70 categories, eight sizes – and a breakfast that is a credit.

The choice at this hotel is unusually wide: 70 categories. Sorted by size, there are eight steps:

• 37 square metres: three Vintage casitas
• 43: 21 casitas
• 46 : nine categories, our recommendation among them
• 77: three Hideaway suites
• 125: three Pueblo suites
• 156: three Arzner suites
• 167: three suites
• 186: eight suites, the El Presidente among them

The casitas deserve a sentence of their own: 40 categories at this hotel are casitas – more than almost anywhere else.

And the breakfast is not one in the usual sense: it is a credit of 45 US dollars per day, to be spent at the restaurant Twenty6 and for a maximum of two people. On top comes the hotel credit of 100 US dollars per stay. Two different amounts, then, with two different rules.

Our advice: ask about the position on the grounds. With 21 casitas of the same size it is not the category that decides but where it stands.

Where to stay in La Quinta: between the Santa Rosa mountains and five golf courses

The La Quinta Resort & Club lies on Eisenhower Drive – three kilometres from Old Town La Quinta, four from the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, five from PGA West, 24 from Palm Springs airport, 27 from central Palm Springs and 46 from the Cottonwood entrance of Joshua Tree National Park.

Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who plays golf or comes to Indian Wells for the tennis in March – and for those driving two hours out of Los Angeles into the desert.

What lies within reach: PGA West, five kilometres, with the courses where the Desert Classic is played in January; the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, four kilometres, host of the March tournament; and Old Town La Quinta, three kilometres, with shops and a farmers’ market.

On arrival: Palm Springs airport is 24 kilometres away. From Los Angeles it is about 200 kilometres, a good two hours on Interstate 10.

70 categories, eight sizes: the best hotel in La Quinta from the inside

The La Quinta Resort & Club offers 70 categories, 24 of them suites.

The casitas: three Vintage at 37 square metres, 21 at 43 – among them the categories called Resort, Deluxe or Poolside – and two Starlight at 46.

The rooms: seven Studios at 46 square metres, all looking over the resort. One of them is our recommended category.

The suites: three Hideaway at 77, three Pueblo at 125, three Arzner at 156, three at 167 and eight at 186 square metres – among them the El Presidente.

On the view: this hotel’s motifs are the resort, the garden and the pool – eight categories look out over the resort, three to the garden, one to the pool. Fifteen more carry View in their name; our travel advisors will tell you what to expect there before you book.

What applies equally to every category: 45 US dollars breakfast credit per day at the restaurant Twenty6 for a maximum of two people, 100 US dollars hotel credit per stay, the upgrade on arrival subject to availability, regular points and status benefits with Hilton Honors and early check-in and late check-out subject to availability.

What a night at the luxury hotel in La Quinta costs

A night at the luxury hotel in La Quinta starts at 152 euros. For a resort of this size that is a low entry point.

Bookings start at one night. Included are: 45 US dollars breakfast credit per day at the Twenty6, 100 US dollars hotel credit, the upgrade on arrival subject to availability, regular points and status benefits and early check-in and late check-out.

When it is loveliest: from November to April. The days are then at pleasant temperatures and the golf courses are in season.

What belongs to the desert: the summer. In July and August temperatures in the Coachella Valley regularly pass 40 degrees. That is a fact of the region, not a warning – the resort has 41 pools, and the prices follow suit.

When to ask early: in January for the Desert Classic, in March for the tennis at Indian Wells and in April for the festivals in the valley.

How long to stay: three to four nights – a day of golf, a day at Joshua Tree, the rest by the pool.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

Casitas from 1926 and exclusive services – the alternative to a 5-star hotel

La Quinta has existed as a city only since 1982, the hotel since 1926 – and between those two dates lies the history of the Coachella Valley: first came the date palms, then the golf courses, then the towns.

Three things belong to it. First PGA West: five kilometres, with the Desert Classic courses. Second the Indian Wells Tennis Garden: four kilometres, host in March to one of the largest tournaments outside the Grand Slams. Third Joshua Tree National Park: 46 kilometres to the Cottonwood entrance, where the Colorado desert begins.

The package at this hotel is 45 US dollars breakfast credit per day, 100 US dollars hotel credit, the upgrade on arrival, points and status benefits, and check-in and check-out.

What our travel advisors arrange most often: choosing the casita by position, for the reasons stated above, the tee times on the PGA West courses and the tickets for Indian Wells.
