The Resort at Pelican Hill Newport Coast · Newport BeachWhich of the best hotels in Newport Beach suits you depends on how you like to vacation. For golf, spa days and views over the Pacific, we recommend The Resort at Pelican Hill Newport Coast on the Newport Coast, rated five stars by Forbes Travel Guide. If you’d rather stay on the harbor and watch the boats in the evening, book the Balboa Bay Resort right on Newport Bay.At the Balboa Bay Resort, the 2026 renovation is largely complete, and you notice it the moment you arrive: the lobby is now a living room for all guests, the new Bar nineteen48 looks out over the pool, and the rooms are finished in white oak, walnut and burl wood, inspired by the Hollywood glamour of the 1930s and 1940s.
Balboa Bay Resort · BayshoresThe Surf & Sand Resort Laguna Beach has been fully transformed since June 2025: all 165 rooms and suites were redesigned, and there’s a new Lobby Lounge, the Aquaterra Spa and the Splashes restaurant with a custom chandelier by Dale Chihuly.
At Newport Center, two luxury hotels have made a complete fresh start. The Pendry Newport Beach has welcomed guests since September 2023 in a 20-story tower; 114 of its 295 rooms are suites, and kids have the Paintbox club. The VEA Newport Beach, formerly the Newport Beach Marriott, was rebuilt from top to bottom and reopened in June 2022, with views across the golf course to the Pacific.
In Huntington Beach, the Paséa Hotel Huntington Beach opened the restaurant Lōrea in 2024, with a stone bar about 77 feet long and seating indoors and out; the Treehouse on PCH rooftop bar was refreshed as well.
All eight have a pool, from the luxury resorts to the boutique hotels, and every one of them is outdoors. If you’re choosing your 5-star hotel in Newport Beach by its pool, the real decision is between ocean views, family fun and a quiet cabana.
Surf & Sand Resort Laguna Beach · Orange CountyA pool like an amphitheater: The Coliseum Pool at The Resort at Pelican Hill Newport Coast is perfectly round, 136 feet across and only about three feet deep; it’s lined with 1.1 million hand-cut glass mosaic tiles, filled with saltwater and open to resort guests only. There’s also the Bella Vista Pool for guests of all ages and a separate pool at the Villa Club.
With an ocean view: At the Surf & Sand Resort Laguna Beach, you swim in a heated pool right by the ocean, with a hot tub next to it. The Paséa Hotel Huntington Beach has the Ninth Island Pool with a whirlpool, fire pits, cabanas and daybeds, and the 85-foot Edge pool at the VEA Newport Beach looks across the golf course to the coast.
For families: At the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort, kids splash around the fenced Slyders family pool, with three waterslides, a baby pool, a hot tub and cabanas; two of the slides are for riders 48 inches and taller.
Quiet in a cabana: The Balboa Bay Resort rents poolside cabanas for two to 20 guests, the Lido House Newport Beach has a saltwater courtyard pool with private cabanas, and at the Pendry Newport Beach you lounge on a checkerboard deck, with a wellness cabana and sauna right by the pool.
Cabanas go quickly on sunny weekends. The ones at the Balboa Bay Resort hold up to 20 guests, those at the Pendry Newport Beach up to six. Our travel advisors are happy to request a reservation when you book.
Roman-inspired: At the spa at The Resort at Pelican Hill Newport Coast, men and women each have their own lounge with the Acqua Colonnade: a dry sauna, an aromatic steam room and a saltwater whirlpool; the spa is for guests 18 and over. The Balboa Bay Spa at the Balboa Bay Resort has whirlpools, steam rooms, saunas and a quiet lounge, plus a Drybar blow-dry salon; from Monday to Thursday, it’s also open to day guests.
Paséa Hotel Huntington Beach · Pacific CityWith the Pacific in view: The Aquaterra Spa at the Surf & Sand Resort Laguna Beach has eight treatment rooms and an ocean-view couples’ room, plus yoga and wellness programs, for guests 16 and over. The Aarna Spa at the Paséa Hotel Huntington Beach takes its cue from Bali, with whirlpools, saunas and steam rooms, an open-air spa garden and a saltwater pool; Spas of America lists it among its Top 100.
At no extra cost: you pay the same rate as booking direct with the hotel – the suitespot benefits come on top, free of charge.
At Newport Center: Both luxury hotels there have their own spa, too. SPA VEA at the VEA Newport Beach has 14 treatment rooms, its own saltwater pool with cabanas and a yoga studio. Spa Pendry at the Pendry Newport Beach offers eucalyptus steam rooms, a cryotherapy chamber and a couples’ suite, and the weekly wellness classes are free for hotel guests.
Right on the water: At Splashes at the Surf & Sand Resort Laguna Beach, you dine on palm-shaded patios at the water’s edge; Executive Chef Ron Fougeray cooks Californian coastal cuisine built around fish and seafood, with a chef’s tasting menu on request. The Splashes Bar serves oysters and caviar. At the Balboa Bay Resort, A+O Restaurant | Bar brings seafood, fish tacos and lobster rolls inspired by the Italian Riviera to a harborside patio with fire pits and live music.
Pendry Newport Beach · Newport CenterSteak, sushi and Italy: At the Pendry Newport Beach, Jojo Ruiz prepares tartare tableside at SET Steak & Sushi, and a DJ spins at the weekend brunch; Viamara in the members’ club The Elwood Club opens its weekly High Tea to hotel guests. At The Resort at Pelican Hill Newport Coast, Zack Kasmar grills steaks and fires pizzas in the wood oven at the Pelican Grill, on an ocean-view terrace at the Golf Club.
Drinks with a view: Many guests end the day at their 5-star hotel in Newport Beach with a drink above the rooftops. At the Lido House Newport Beach, reserve the Topside Roof Deck for views of the harbor and the beach; downstairs, the Mayor’s Table serves seafood and a raw bar. In Huntington Beach, the Paséa Hotel Huntington Beach’s Treehouse on PCH rooftop bar looks out over the Pacific in every direction, for guests 21 and over.
At VIEW Restaurant & Lounge at the VEA Newport Beach, folding glass walls open onto the lanai, and the view reaches across the golf course to Catalina Island. On the Bella Vista Terrace at the Surf & Sand Resort Laguna Beach, there’s live music by the fire pits from Thursday to Sunday, right above the ocean.
The story goes back furthest at the Balboa Bay Club, founded in 1948: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall and John Wayne came here, as did several US presidents. Since 2003, the Balboa Bay Resort and its 159 rooms have been open to all guests. In that same year of 1948, the Surf & Sand Resort Laguna Beach opened in Laguna Beach and soon drew artists and Hollywood names; in the 1970s, the White House press corps stayed here whenever President Nixon was at his San Clemente home.
Lido House Newport Beach · Balboa PeninsulaThe tower of the Pendry Newport Beach was built in 1986 and first opened as a Four Seasons. The Lido House Newport Beach stands on the site of Newport Beach’s former City Hall, remembered in the name of its restaurant, the Mayor’s Table; developer Robert D. Olson modeled the Cape Cod-style building on his own home on Balboa Island.
Award-winning: The Resort at Pelican Hill Newport Coast holds five stars in the Forbes Travel Guide, the Balboa Bay Resort four. The guide lists the Pendry Newport Beach and the Paséa Hotel Huntington Beach as “Recommended.” So if you want an award-winning luxury hotel, you’ll find one on the Newport Coast, on the bay, at Newport Center and in Huntington Beach.
Newport Beach runs from the harbor over the hills of the Newport Coast to the coves of Corona del Mar, and the Pacific Coast Highway links it all with Huntington Beach to the north and Laguna Beach to the south. Pick your luxury hotel in Newport Beach by what you want outside your window: boats, fairways or sand.
VEA Newport Beach · Newport CenterOn the harbor and the Balboa Peninsula: The Balboa Bay Resort sits on a large waterfront property right on Newport Bay; you can rent Duffy electric boats, kayaks and paddleboards on site. Our pick for strollers is the Lido House Newport Beach at the entrance to the peninsula, steps from Lido Marina Village, between the harbor and the beach.
Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort · Huntington State BeachNewport Center and Fashion Island: The VEA Newport Beach is across the street from Fashion Island, and a shuttle takes you to Corona del Mar State Beach. The Pendry Newport Beach sits between the coastline and the shopping center; John Wayne Airport is about ten minutes away by car.
Newport Coast: The Resort at Pelican Hill Newport Coast spreads over 504 acres above Crystal Cove State Park, with two courses by Tom Fazio and 36 holes of ocean-view golf.
At no extra cost: you pay the same rate as booking direct with the hotel – the suitespot benefits come on top, free of charge.
Laguna Beach: The Surf & Sand Resort Laguna Beach stands right on the sand, along 500 feet of shoreline just south of Newport Beach.
Huntington Beach: Two luxury hotels stand in the surf town north of Newport Beach. The Paséa Hotel Huntington Beach is on Pacific Coast Highway across from the beach, within walking distance of the pier and Main Street; a beach butler brings chairs, umbrellas and, on request, everything for a bonfire. From the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort, a pedestrian bridge leads to the beach.
Newport Beach is at its best from the water. The Pendry Newport Beach charters its own boat, the Sea Ray “Aperitivo,” for trips to Emerald Bay, and at the Balboa Bay Resort you can rent an electric boat for a loop around Balboa Island. Tell us what you have in mind, and we’ll plan the day with you.

What’s included everywhere: an upgrade on arrival, subject to availability (at the Hyatt Regency already at booking, not from room to suite), plus early check-in and late check-out, subject to availability. The benefits apply from the first night at every hotel.
Breakfast for two is included at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort, the Pendry Newport Beach and the Lido House Newport Beach. In the villas at The Resort at Pelican Hill Newport Coast, two of you have breakfast at the Villa Club; in the bungalows, there’s a daily credit of $45 or $25, depending on the rate.
A daily breakfast credit for up to two people applies at the other hotels: $50 at the Paséa Hotel Huntington Beach, $43 at the Surf & Sand Resort Laguna Beach, $35 at the VEA Newport Beach and $20 at the Balboa Bay Resort.
The hotel credit is $100 at every hotel except the Lido House Newport Beach. At the Balboa Bay Resort, you can use it at the spa, for shopping and for dining; at The Resort at Pelican Hill Newport Coast, not in the shops. At the Paséa Hotel Huntington Beach, the Ocean View Studio, Oceanfront One Bedroom Suite and Pasea Penthouse come with an extra $100 from two nights, not combinable with promotions.
Points and status count at seven of the eight luxury hotels in and around Newport Beach: Marriott Bonvoy at The Resort at Pelican Hill Newport Coast, the Lido House Newport Beach and the VEA Newport Beach, I Prefer at the Surf & Sand Resort Laguna Beach, the Balboa Bay Resort and the Pendry Newport Beach, and World of Hyatt at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort. The Paséa Hotel Huntington Beach isn’t part of any program, so the suitespot benefits are what count there.
When it’s loveliest: In summer, all of Huntington Beach surfs and the beaches are busy until evening. In fall, the water is warm and the air clear; in winter, whales pass along the coast, and in December the Christmas boat parade of lit-up vessels cruises through the harbor. Book early for summer weekends and the nights of the boat parade.
How long to stay: For a 5-star hotel in Newport Beach, we recommend three nights – one day for the harbor and Balboa Island, one for Crystal Cove and Laguna Beach, and one for the pool, the spa or golf.

Yes, at seven of the eight: Marriott Bonvoy applies at The Resort at Pelican Hill Newport Coast, for example, I Prefer at the Balboa Bay Resort and World of Hyatt at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort. Since suitespot books the hotel’s own direct rates, points and status nights keep adding up as normal. Only the Paséa Hotel Huntington Beach isn’t part of a program; there, the suitespot benefits are what count.
On the harbor for boats and sunsets over the bay (our pick: Balboa Bay Resort), on the Newport Coast for golf and tranquility (our pick: The Resort at Pelican Hill Newport Coast), at Newport Center for Fashion Island and a short drive to the airport (our pick: VEA Newport Beach) and in Laguna Beach for the beach on your doorstep (our pick: Surf & Sand Resort Laguna Beach).
