The hotels in New York City are spread across several districts, and the district shapes a stay more than the fittings do. First-time visitors usually stay central; those who know the city pick the quieter side. At the top of our recommendation: the Conrad New York Downtown.

Conrad New York Downtown Β· Battery Park CityFor this guide we have gathered the best hotels in New York: 79 luxury hotels. That precision is your most useful tool. The luxury hotels in New York cost between 178 € and 1,871 € a night, on average 358 € – counted across the 75 for which we hold a price.
The Times Square EDITION Β· ManhattanThat makes New York less expensive than London (388 €) and clearly less expensive than Paris (427 €). It surprises most people.
And then there is that one quirk of the New York catalogues.
We counted all 1,914 categories at the 79 hotels and sorted what the names promise. At the top is what you would expect: the city in 308 categories, the park in 131, the river in 51, the skyline in 31, the Empire State Building in 16.
And now the observation that changes the booking: the motif does not follow the price.
The Kimpton Era Midtown New York from 197 € – the third least expensive hotel with a price – carries twelve categories facing the Empire State Building. More than any other hotel in this selection: the The Langham New York Fifth Avenue comes to two, two further hotels to one each.
Two things follow, and both help you.
First: in New York the price buys the address, not the view. If you want the view, you have to order it – it does not come along automatically.
Second: the New York catalogues are precise. When a category names the Empire State Building, it means it – which makes naming the motif worth more here than elsewhere.
Our advice: tell us both – the hotel and the direction. Across 1,914 categories, that is the difference between a good booking and the right one.
And worth noting: at the Hotel 50 Bowery New York, the The Frederick Hotel New York, the Hyatt Centric Times Square New York, the The Iroquois New York, the The Standard East Village New York and the The Lowell New York the suitespot benefits apply from two nights. Everywhere else, from the first.
In New York the question of the neighbourhood is at the same time a question about the view.
The Knickerbocker New York Β· Midtown SouthBy the park. Twelve hotels carry categories that name the park – 131 in total. The highest share belongs to the Park Lane New York from 305 € with eleven of 18; the most belong to the W New York - Union Square with 47. Then come the The Ritz-Carlton New York Central Park with 21 and the The London New York City with 13. Our recommendation for anyone who wants to run in the morning.
In Midtown. Most of what you know from films is here – and so is the Kimpton Era Midtown New York from 197 € with its twelve views of the tower, the New York Marriott Marquis on Times Square and the The Lotte New York Palace, the only one of the 79 to name a cathedral in its categories, five of 38. Our recommendation for a first visit.
Downtown and Soho. The Hotel 50 Bowery New York from 184 € is the most affordable address in Manhattan, the The Wall Street Hotel and the Casa Cipriani New York stand on the water, the The Greenwich Hotel New York in Tribeca. Our recommendation for anyone who wants to walk to dinner.
Uptown and the Upper East Side. The The Carlyle New York, a Rosewood Hotel, the The Mark New York and the The Lowell New York – the quietest corner of this selection. Our recommendation for anyone who wants the museums on foot.
And across the Hudson. Three hotels on this page stand in New Jersey, not in New York: the The MC Hotel Montclair from 178 € in Montclair, the W Hoboken from 346 € in Hoboken and a third in Weehawken. The lowest price on this page therefore does not belong to Manhattan – in exchange the W Hoboken carries 29 of its 37 categories facing the river and with it the skyline, more than any hotel on the other side. Our recommendation for anyone who would rather look at Manhattan than sleep inside it.
Together the best hotels in New York carry 1,914 categories, and 826 of them are suites – more than four in ten.
Mandarin Oriental New York Β· Hell's KitchenThe longest list in the city belongs to the Thompson Central Park New York with 137 categories; then come the W New York - Union Square with 80, the The Ritz-Carlton New York Central Park with 72 and the The Ritz-Carlton New York NoMad with 66.
The largest units: a suite at the Mandarin Oriental New York at 344 square metres – the largest in this selection. Then 325 at the The Lotte New York Palace, 288 at the Faena New York, 265 at the Waldorf Astoria New York and 259 at the Aman New York.
For a city in this price bracket that is not much. Manhattan is built tight, and the square metre is not the currency people count in here.
Which makes it all the more useful when the figure is there at all – and it is, for only 873 of the 1,914 categories. 26 hotels state none, among them the Aman New York, the The Mark New York and the The Greenwich Hotel New York. Where it is missing, our travel advisors have it confirmed before you book – in New York, that is one hotel in three.
And the view. Nowhere is it named as precisely.
131 categories in twelve hotels face the park. 51 face the river – most at the W Hoboken with 29, plus the Equinox Hotel New York City with seven and the Mandarin Oriental New York with five. 16 name the Empire State Building, twelve of them at the Kimpton Era Midtown New York alone. Four name Times Square, five a cathedral – all five at the The Lotte New York Palace.
A night at a 5-star hotel in New York costs between 178 € and 1,871 €, on average 358 € – counted across the 75 hotels with a price.
The table shows the 34 this page is about: both ends of the price range, all six with a minimum stay, both hotels across the Hudson and for each motif the hotels that show something. The third column says from which night the suitespot benefits apply.
Counted across the whole city: at 73 of the 79 hotels the benefits apply from the first night. Six ask for two.
When it is at its best: from April to June and from September to early December. In spring the park is in bloom, in autumn it turns, and both are the weeks when you walk most in New York.
High summer is warm and loud, and the city is entirely outdoors: rooftop bars, concerts in the parks, open-air cinema. Our recommendation for anyone who wants New York as a stage.
January and February are the quietest weeks of the year. The museums are empty, the restaurants take short-notice reservations, and for a few weeks the city belongs to the people who live in it. Our recommendation for a second visit.
And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year exactly as in the busiest.
The hotel credit comes in 14 different forms in New York.
Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking β 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 Β· hotel@suitespot.comThe most common:
• 100 US dollars freely usable at 32 hotels
• 100 US dollars for food and drink at 14, among them the The Pierre New York and the JW Marriott Essex House New York
• 50 US dollars at five
• 100 US dollars for the spa at three, among them the The Greenwich Hotel New York
• 25 US dollars at three
Then there are the individual cases worth knowing. At the Hotel 50 Bowery New York it is 75 US dollars. At the The Langham New York Fifth Avenue the credit is variable – ask us about the specific offer. At the Mandarin Oriental New York it doubles to 200 US dollars for suites, pro rata. And one hotel states its credit not in dollars but in euros, the only one on this page.
On breakfast it pays to ask: in New York it is not part of the package throughout, the way it is in Frankfurt or on Koh Samui. We can see in the offer which rate brings it along, and we tell you before you book.
And the loyalty programmes: at 55 of the 79 hotels you earn points, across nine programmes – most often Marriott Bonvoy, 20 times. Best to give us your membership number with the enquiry.
Most properties in this selection earn with Marriott Bonvoy. Your status benefits and points stay intact: suitespot books direct rates, not consolidator fares. The programs you will find in New York City:
At no extra cost: you pay the same rate as booking direct with the hotel – the suitespot benefits come on top, free of charge.

By the park if you want to run in the morning (recommendation: Park Lane New York). In Midtown for a first visit (recommendation: The Lotte New York Palace). Downtown if you want to walk to dinner (recommendation: The Greenwich Hotel New York).
