The Lowell New York Β· Lenox HillWhich one suits you depends on how you want to experience New York. If you are after a suite with a fireplace, book The Lowell New York on the Upper East Side: 47 of its 74 rooms are suites, many with a wood-burning fireplace, kitchen or terrace. For a stay on the water, we recommend Casa Cipriani New York, with views of the Statue of Liberty, the East River and the Brooklyn Bridge. You recognize a boutique hotel in New York City less by a fixed room count than by its character: its own restaurants and bars, interiors with a signature and service that takes time for each guest. The houses in this selection range from 11 to just over 200 rooms, with a single one above that. Most are in Downtown Manhattan, where lofts, cobblestones and old bank buildings set the tone.
The Manner New York Β· SohoSoHo: Between galleries and boutiques, The Mercer New York sits on the corner of Mercer and Prince Street, with views of cobblestone streets or a terrace garden. For a quieter stay, choose The Manner New York on a tree-lined side street, Thompson Street.
Casa Cipriani New York Β· ManhattenTribeca: Our tip is The Greenwich Hotel New York on Greenwich Street, five minutes' walk from Hudson River Park. Smyth Tribeca New York stands on the corner of West Broadway and Chambers Street, and The Roxy Hotel New York on a cobblestone corner where Tribeca meets SoHo.
Financial District and Seaport: Right on the water, Casa Cipriani New York occupies the Battery Maritime Building, a few steps from Wall Street. The Wall Street Hotel is on the corner of Wall and Pearl Street near the Seaport, and Gild Hall New York on Gold Street, close to the Brooklyn Bridge and South Street Seaport.
Lower East Side and East Village: Nine Orchard New York stands on the corner of Orchard and Canal Street, exactly where the Lower East Side meets Chinatown. The Ludlow Hotel is a few steps from Katz’s Delicatessen, and the glass tower of The Standard East Village New York rises above the low-rise East Village on Cooper Square.
Midtown, NoMad and the Upper East Side: To stay close to Central Park, book The Lowell New York between Park and Madison Avenue. The Fifth Avenue Hotel New York sits on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 28th Street in NoMad, The Iroquois New York on quiet 44th Street, a few steps from the Theater District and Bryant Park.
Several houses pour their guests a complimentary glass. 33 Hotel, New York City, Seaport hosts a wine hour daily from 4 to 5pm, and The Iroquois New York from Tuesday to Thursday, 5 to 6pm in the lobby, plus city walks with Streetwise. Plan the hour in after a day in the city, before you head out to dinner.
Our tip for architecture lovers is Nine Orchard New York. Rouse & Goldstone built the Jarmulowsky Bank in 1912 in Beaux-Arts style; after years of vacancy the building was restored over a decade, including a rebuilt domed tempietto, and opened as a hotel in 2022. The former banking hall with its vaulted ceiling and pink Tennessee marble is now the Swan Room. Casa Cipriani New York occupies the upper floors of the Battery Maritime Building, which Walker & Morris built from 1906 to 1909 as a ferry terminal to Brooklyn; the Governors Island ferry still leaves from here today.
Nine Orchard New York Β· China TownThe Fifth Avenue Hotel New York brings the Gilded Age and the present together: the mansion that McKim, Mead & White once converted into the Second National Bank has been joined by a 24-story glass tower since 2023. Martin Brudnizki furnished the house in maximalist style with antiques and art. The Wall Street Hotel stands on the site of the Tontine Coffee House; the Australian pearling family Paspaley had the building converted into a hotel and filled with commissioned Aboriginal art from the APY Art Centre Collective. The interiors are by Rose Ink Workshop.
The Mercer New York Β· Lower ManhattanThe Lowell New York opened in 1927 and is still independent and family-owned; the house celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2027. It reopened in 2017 after a three-year renovation by interior designer Michael S. Smith. In SoHo, The Mercer New York occupies a six-story brick building from 1890, built as an office building for the Astor family and later used as an artist's loft. It has been a hotel since 1997, with furniture Christian Liaigre designed exclusively for the house.
Michelin Keys: Casa Cipriani New York holds three Keys, while The Lowell New York, The Fifth Avenue Hotel New York and Nine Orchard New York hold two each. Michelin Keys recognize hotels, not restaurants. Four more houses in this selection hold one Key each.
Boutique hotels in New York City have a signature even without a historic building. At The Greenwich Hotel New York, which Robert De Niro opened in 2008 with hoteliers Ira Drukier and Richard Born, no two rooms are alike; the interiors are by Grayling Design, and paintings by Robert De Niro Sr. hang in the house. Jim Walrod designed Gild Hall New York like a gentlemen's club, with antler chandeliers, leather upholstery and a two-story library. And Milan architect Hannes Peer furnished The Manner New York in mid-century modern style, with rooms deliberately free of TVs.
With 47 rooms, 19 of them suites, Casa Cipriani New York is among the smallest houses in this selection. The hotel is part of a private members' club run by the Cipriani family, and guests enjoy butler service; after 5pm the club areas are open to guests aged 21 and over only. The Lowell New York has more suites than rooms: 47 of its 74 units are suites. During the day the Club Room, with its fireplace and library, is reserved for hotel guests, and from 4:30pm it serves cocktails and champagne.
The Greenwich Hotel New York Β· TribecaDowntown can be just as personal. The Greenwich Hotel New York has 86 individually furnished rooms, including 15 suites; the Drawing Room, Colonnade and courtyard are reserved for hotel guests. The Mercer New York has 73 rooms and a lobby for hotel guests only, the minibar with snacks, water and soft drinks is complimentary, and room service is available around the clock.
Fasano Fifth Avenue New York Β· Upper East SideAt The Manner New York you feel like a guest of friends: in The Apartment lounge, open around the clock to hotel guests only, a light breakfast and aperitivo with canapΓ©s are included in the room rate. The house has 97 rooms, including 11 suites, and welcomes guests aged 16 and over; check-in is from age 21. Smaller still is Fasano Fifth Avenue New York across from Central Park: a hotel and private members' club with 11 rooms, including duplex apartments with a kitchen. Our travel advisors will check for you whether short stays are possible and at what rate.
If you want to sit outside, ask for the Penthouse Terrace Suite at Smyth Tribeca New York, with views as far as the Empire State Building, or for the terrace suites at 33 Hotel, New York City, Seaport, with a wraparound terrace facing the Brooklyn Bridge. Our travel advisors will check which of these categories is available for your dates.
For food lovers, 11 Howard in SoHo is a fixed address: here Daniel Rose cooks classic French cuisine at Le Coucou, a restaurant holding one Michelin star. It is a collaboration with Stephen Starr, and the interiors are by Roman and Williams. Andrew Carmellini appears twice: with the Italian neighborhood taverna Locanda Verde at The Greenwich Hotel New York and with CafΓ© Carmellini in the mansion of The Fifth Avenue Hotel New York, where Italian and French cuisine meet.
11 Howard Β· DiningAt The Lowell New York, executive chef David Thual cooks French-Mediterranean dishes with Moroccan influences at Majorelle, set in a year-round garden courtyard with fruit trees, a fountain and a fireplace. From Wednesday to Sunday it serves the Lily of the Valley afternoon tea with Dior Maison. At The Ludlow Hotel, Major Food Group runs the bistro Dirty French, with classic French dishes and bold flavors.
Nine Orchard New York Β· DiningFor cocktail evenings, we recommend three bars. In the Swan Room at Nine Orchard New York you sit in the bank's former banking hall, with martinis and small plates in the evening. On the roof of The Wall Street Hotel, the seasonal Bar Tontine on the 15th floor has a 180-degree terrace over Lower Manhattan and the East River. And at The Iroquois New York, the speakeasy Lantern’s Keep mixes Prohibition-style cocktails.
At no extra cost: you pay the same rate as booking direct with the hotel β the suitespot benefits come on top, free of charge.
Jazz belongs to New York, hotels included. In the Jazz CafΓ© at Casa Cipriani New York, a pianist and changing bands play over dinner from Tuesday to Saturday, starting at 7pm. At The Roxy Hotel New York, the jazz club The Django downstairs invites you to live jazz and dancing, and at the Club Room of Soho Grand Hotel New York hotel guests enjoy jazz and DJs with no cover charge.
Tables at Le Coucou in 11 Howard are released only 28 days in advance. If you want to dine there, note the date as soon as your travel dates are set and book on the first possible day.
