Your guide to the best hotels in Santa Monica

Santa Monica is a city of its own at the western edge of Los Angeles County, a good three kilometres long and not three wide. Stay here and you stay on the Pacific and need no car for most of it – which in this part of the world is rare.Shutters on the Beach Santa MonicaShutters on the Beach Santa Monica · DowntownWe list 9 hotels here with a median of 458 € a night – above San Diego (311 €) and Los Angeles (308 €), below Malibu (717 €).

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

9 hotels in Santa Monica – how to choose

Between the most expensive hotel and the most affordable there are often only a few blocks.Casa Del Mar Santa MonicaCasa Del Mar Santa MonicaRight on the Ocean Avenue and the beach stand five addresses: the Shutters on the Beach on Pico Boulevard, the Casa Del Mar on Ocean Way, the Regent Santa Monica Beach and the Sandbourne Santa Monica near the pier, and the Oceana Santa Monica further north, whose categories are named for the ocean view. Our recommendation: the Shutters on the Beach.

One block inland, on Wilshire and in downtown, come the Huntley Santa Monica Beach on 2nd Street, the Fairmont Miramar on Wilshire with categories facing the ocean and the Santa Monica Proper with a category facing the garden. Our recommendation: the Huntley.

And south of them, on Pico Boulevard, the Le Méridien Delfina.

Our travel advisors' insider tip

Two blocks apart – and three times the breakfast.

Almost every hotel here gives you a daily breakfast credit, but the amounts differ widely. At the Regent Santa Monica Beach it is 60 US dollars a day, at the Fairmont Miramar and the Santa Monica Proper 35 each, at the Shutters, the Casa Del Mar and the Sandbourne 30 each, at the Oceana 25 and at the Huntley 20. At the Le Méridien Delfina breakfast for two is included outright.

For one night that is a footnote. Over five nights it is a difference of between 100 and 300 US dollars – and some of these hotels are within sight of each other.

Which makes one calculation genuinely worth doing here: multiply the breakfast credit by your number of nights before you compare two hotels. On short stays the location decides; on long ones the credit can reverse the order.

The selection starts at 285 € at the Sandbourne and 405 € at the Huntley.

And in all nine hotels the suitespot benefits apply from the first night.

Where to stay in Santa Monica: the beach or Wilshire

From LAX it is twenty minutes north – no other destination of this size lies closer.Huntley Santa Monica BeachHuntley Santa Monica Beach · DowntownStay on the beach if the day should happen by the water: the pier with its Ferris wheel, the bike path to Venice and back, the palisades above the coast. Our recommendation: the Shutters on the Beach, for us the first address in the city.

Stay on Wilshire and in downtown if the evening should happen on foot: the Third Street Promenade, the restaurants on Montana Avenue, Bergamot Station with its galleries. Our recommendation: the Huntley Santa Monica Beach.

And on Pico Boulevard you stay quieter and closer to the arterial road (recommendation: the Le Méridien Delfina).

For orientation: Venice is half an hour on foot along the water, Malibu forty minutes up the coast by car, downtown Los Angeles thirty to sixty depending on traffic.

Rooms, suites and villas in Santa Monica

Here you eat by the water and in the side streets off Montana Avenue.Oceana Santa MonicaOceana Santa Monica · DowntownThe highest breakfast credit is at the Regent with 60 US dollars a day. Then come the Fairmont Miramar and the Santa Monica Proper at 35 each, the Shutters, the Casa Del Mar and the Sandbourne at 30 each – there at its own Marelle – the Oceana at 25 and the Huntley at 20. At the Le Méridien Delfina breakfast for two is included.

For the evening: the farmers' market on Arizona Avenue on Wednesdays and Saturdays, where the city's kitchens shop too; the fish places by the pier; and Montana Avenue for everything quieter.

If you want to go further: Venice is walkable, and downtown Los Angeles is another city entirely.

What a stay in Santa Monica costs

The median is 458 € a night. The selection starts at 285 € at the Sandbourne Santa Monica and runs to 815 € at the Regent Santa Monica Beach.

In between sit the Huntley from 405 €, the Santa Monica Proper from 422 €, the Shutters from 439 € and the Fairmont Miramar from 458 €; above them the Oceana from 732 €.

Against the neighbours: Los Angeles sits at 308 €, San Diego at 311 € and Malibu at 717 €. So you pay a premium over the city for the coast – and get the beach at the door instead of a drive to it.

It costs least in late autumn and winter, when the air is clearest and you can see from the palisades all the way to Catalina. Book early for the summer holidays, the weeks around New Year and awards season in February – those are the most sought-after nights of the year.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

Dining, beach and exclusive services

Santa Monica is where Los Angeles stops and the ocean starts – and it works on foot, which around here is unusual.

Worth seeing are the pier of 1909 with its solar-powered Ferris wheel, Palisades Park on the bluff, the end of Route 66, Bergamot Station with its galleries in an old streetcar depot, and the bike path that runs 35 kilometres along the coast.

For a day trip: up the coast to Malibu, the Getty Center above the Sepulveda Pass, or Venice with its canals.

Alongside breakfast, an upgrade where available and late check-out, five of the 9 hotels add a freely usable credit of 100 US dollars – the Shutters, the Casa Del Mar, the Huntley, the Oceana and the Regent. At the Santa Monica Proper it applies to selected rates, and from the Deluxe Suite a further 100 US dollars for food and drink is added there from two nights.

At the Fairmont Miramar a credit of 100 US dollars applies to food and drink or the spa, and at the Sandbourne to food and drink.

One more thing worth noting: in all nine hotels you earn points and status – across five programmes, most often iPrefer and Marriott Bonvoy with three hotels each. We register your VIP status before you arrive.
