Two of the eight are not in Scottsdale. The ADERO Scottsdale Resort is in Fountain Hills, some twenty minutes east – which is not a drawback but the entire point of that hotel, because the town enforces a dark-sky ordinance. And the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain sits on the southern slope of Camelback, closer to Paradise Valley than to Old Town.
So tell our travel advisors whether you want to walk to dinner. If you do, the Hotel Valley Ho and the W Scottsdale are the candidates – both stand in Old Town. If you do not, the whole list opens up, and the car is parked outside anyway.
Where to stay in Scottsdale: Old Town, Camelback or the desert
Scottsdale runs some thirty kilometres from south to north, and the eight hotels are spread along exactly that axis.
Fairmont Scottsdale PrincessIn Old Town, the old core with the galleries and restaurants, stand two: the Hotel Valley Ho on Main Street and the W Scottsdale on Camelback Road. Our recommendation for anyone who wants to manage the evening without a car. The Hotel Valley Ho is a piece of city history in itself: opened in 1956, the first hotel in Scottsdale with central air conditioning, reopened in 2005 after years standing empty and today on the Scottsdale Historic Register.
On Camelback Mountain lies the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain, on grounds of roughly 53 acres. Our recommendation when the stay itself is the destination.
To the north, along Scottsdale Road and around Gainey Ranch, are four: the Grand Hyatt Scottsdale Resort with its pool complex, the Andaz Scottsdale Resort on 23 acres, the Kimpton Miralina Resort and – further north on Princess Drive – the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess on 65 acres. Our recommendation for anyone staying by the pool or on the course during the day.
And in Fountain Hills, about twenty minutes east, stands the ADERO Scottsdale Resort. The town enforces its own ordinance against light pollution – which is why you see more here at night than elsewhere.

Andaz Scottsdale Resort · Las VillasThe largest floor area in the selection is at the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain, and there it is not called a suite but a villa: the Luna Villa at roughly 511 square metres, with its own pool. At the Andaz Scottsdale Resort the Albers House measures 167, at the W Scottsdale the W Suite 139 and at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess the Fairmont Gold 1-Bedroom Suite 118.
The breadth of choice varies sharply: the Grand Hyatt Scottsdale Resort lists 79 categories and the Hotel Valley Ho 27, while the Andaz Scottsdale Resort lists 13 and the W Scottsdale 15. Many categories here are not called rooms at all: casitas, bungalows and villas are desert building types in their own right, usually single-storey and with a private entrance.
On the view, nearly every hotel has its own motif. From the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain you see Camelback Mountain. At the ADERO Scottsdale Resort you look into the night sky – telescopes are provided. When it is busiest: in February and March, when the golf tournament and the baseball camps coincide. If you are coming in those weeks, book months ahead.
When it is quietest: from June to August. Temperatures pass 100 degrees Fahrenheit, life moves to the early morning and the pool – and rates are the lowest of the year.

The second is the mountain. Camelback Mountain can be climbed in two to three hours, early in the morning and with plenty of water. The Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain sits on its slope.
The third is the sky. Fountain Hills enforces an ordinance against light pollution, and the ADERO Scottsdale Resort uses it with telescopes and guided sky tours. That is not a garnish but the reason to stay there.
