Now the floor areas. Six of the fifteen categories measure 52 square metres, and all six are rooms. The next step measures 109 – and is a suite. So the biggest jump in the whole hotel, a clean doubling, coincides exactly with the boundary at which the upgrade stops.
What that means in practice:
• If you want more than 52 square metres, book it. The upgrade will not carry you over that threshold, and there is nothing in between.
• Within the rooms it is still worth having. Bay views start at 52 square metres, just as they appear higher up – so the view most people come for is available without a suite. That is precisely where the upgrade can take you.
• Tell us both when you enquire: room or suite, and whether the bay should be in the window. Because the upgrade works at the time of booking, that question has to be settled beforehand and not at reception.
Our advice: decide the category type, and leave the view to us. Here that is the division of labour that pays best.
Where to stay on the Peninsula Papagayo: in El Coyol, on the bay
The Andaz Costa Rica Resort stands in the El Coyol area on the Peninsula Papagayo, on a bay in north-western Costa Rica. The headland is a closed area: one road in, dry forest on both sides, and the water at the end.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants to experience Guanacaste from the beach and would rather have nature at the door than go looking for it.
What is within reach: the bays of the peninsula themselves, where the water stays sheltered; the tropical dry forest of Guanacaste, a vegetation type that drops its leaves in the dry season and makes the animals visible in the process; and the volcanoes inland, among them Rincón de la Vieja with its mud pots and fumaroles, a good hour and a half away by car.
For orientation: Liberia airport is about forty minutes by car – that is this region’s decisive advantage over the Caribbean side. Allow four to five hours by road to San José, or a domestic flight, and the surf beaches around Tamarindo lie an hour south.

On the outlook: seven of the 15 categories face the bay, two the forest. The water is the rule here. And it does not sit behind the suite boundary: there are bay-view categories among the 52-square-metre rooms too.
