Why we recommend it: Because it is the golf resort in Florida with the longest tournament history: four courses with 72 holes, all redesigned by Gil Hanse, among them the Blue Monster, where the professionals have played since the 1960s. Add 643 rooms and suites, a spa of around 4,400 square metres, the Royal Palm Pool with a 38-metre slide, the BLT Prime steakhouse and four Har-Tru tennis courts – all of it ten minutes from the airport. Our recommended category is called Premier Garden View Suite.

On a resort with 72 holes, only four categories say “golf” – and our recommendation is not among them.
Thirty categories, each with its own view. Twenty-six of them look onto the garden. Four are called Premier Golf View and measure 40 square metres.
That means: anyone coming for the Blue Monster and wanting a window onto the fairways has exactly four categories promising it. All the others, from the 32 square metres of the Deluxe to the 161 square metre Grand Suite, see the garden – our recommended category included.
And that one has a second peculiarity: the Premier Garden View Suite comes at 93, 94 and 120 square metres. Same name, three sizes. Anyone booking “the recommended suite” has not yet said which.
Our advice: Decide first whether you want to see the course or the space. For the course: Premier Golf View, 40 square metres, booked by name – with a note to our travel advisors that the upgrade on arrival should not lead into the garden. For the space: the Premier Suite at 120, explicitly by number, not by name.
Where to stay in Doral: on the golf resort, ten minutes from Miami airport
The Trump National Doral Miami sits on around 650 acres in the west of Miami-Dade – five kilometres from Miami International Airport, twenty kilometres from South Beach. Doral itself is a city of office parks, warehouses and golf communities; the resort is its centre.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone flying to Miami to play golf – and for anyone who wants a night with pool, spa and steak between two flights instead of one at an airport hotel.
What lies within reach: Miami International, ten minutes – that is the real advantage of the location; the Dolphin Mall, the region’s largest outlet centre, five minutes; and Downtown Miami with Brickell and the Pérez Art Museum, half an hour – when the Dolphin Expressway is clear.
For orientation: South Beach and Ocean Drive are a good half hour to the east, the Everglades with Shark Valley an hour to the west. Little works in Doral without a car; the resort is large enough that you drive it inside by cart.

When to ask early: in the weeks around the major tournaments and during spring break in March – then Miami is full, and Doral with it.
