Your guide to the best luxury hotels in Tulum

Tulum is a beach with a Maya ruin above it and a road behind it where the hotels stand – and, for a few years now, a resort zone to the north as well.Conrad Tulum Riviera MayaConrad Tulum Riviera Maya · Riviera MayaFor this guide we have put together the best hotels in Tulum: eight luxury hotels, almost all of them 5-star hotels, with a typical rate of 225 € per night.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

Eight 5-star hotels in Tulum – how to choose

The best hotels in Tulum fall into three very different settings.Wakax Hacienda TulumWakax Hacienda Tulum · Quintana RooOn the beach road stand the small hotels that grew up with the place: the Mi Amor Tulum, the cheapest 5-star hotel in Tulum, the Nômade Temple Tulum, the La Zebra Tulum – for us the first address in town, because 16 of its 21 categories are suites –, the Mezzanine Tulum and the Papaya Playa Project, which lists whole villas instead of rooms.

In the resort zone north of town, towards the Riviera Maya, lie the two large ones: the Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya and the Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort with the widest choice of categories.

And inland, between jungle and cenotes, stands the Wakax Hacienda Tulum, a converted hacienda with seven categories.

Our travel advisors' insider tip

At most destinations in our selection, the extra that comes with the room is a formality: a credit, the same amount everywhere. In Tulum it is precisely not – here it comes out eight different ways across eight hotels.

In order: 100 US dollars to spend freely at the Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya and the Nômade Temple Tulum. 50 US dollars at the Wakax Hacienda Tulum, the Mezzanine Tulum, the La Zebra Tulum and the Mi Amor Tulum. At the Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort it is also 100 US dollars, and they apply to the spa. And at the Papaya Playa Project the extra is not an amount at all but a Maya abdominal massage.

Why that counts for more here than elsewhere: at a typical rate of 225 €, 100 US dollars is close to half a night. In an expensive city the same sum would be a footnote – in Tulum it shifts the comparison noticeably.

Our advice: in Tulum, read the extra as closely as the price. Two hotels 100 € apart at first glance can come out in the opposite order once the extra is counted. Tell our travel advisors whether you would rather have a free credit, a spa treatment or the massage – we will work out which wins.

Where to stay in Tulum: beach road, resort zone or jungle

In Tulum the setting decides not a few minutes but the kind of stay you have.Mezzanine TulumMezzanine TulumThe beach road, the Zona Hotelera, is the Tulum of the pictures: sand at the door, beach clubs, restaurants, music in the evening. The hotels are small and individual, the distances short. Our recommendation: the La Zebra Tulum.

The resort zone to the north, towards the Riviera Maya, is new and built on a generous scale: a stretch of private beach, several restaurants on site, pools and spa – and the shortest drive from the airport. Our recommendation: the Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya.

Inland is the quietest Tulum: jungle, cenotes, silence. Our recommendation: the Wakax Hacienda Tulum.

For orientation: the ruins of Tulum sit at the northern end of the beach road, the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve begins at the southern one. Cobá is just under an hour inland, Playa del Carmen an hour to the north.

Rooms, suites and villas: the best hotels in Tulum from the inside

The best hotels in Tulum offer 121 categories, 49 of them suites.La Zebra TulumLa Zebra TulumThey are densest at the La Zebra Tulum: 16 of 21 categories are suites, the largest two penthouses of 128 square metres each. The largest single rooms in the selection are at the Wakax Hacienda Tulum – two villas of 223 and 188 square metres – followed by two suites at the Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya of 185 each and one at the Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort of 159.

A case of its own is the Papaya Playa Project: there you do not book rooms but whole villas on the slope above the beach.

The widest choice is at the Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort with 23 categories; the narrowest is the Mezzanine Tulum with five – among them a penthouse of 60 square metres.

The view in Tulum is mostly a question of where you are. On the beach road you look out from the Mezzanine Tulum onto the sea, from the La Zebra Tulum into the garden and from the Mi Amor Tulum into the jungle. In the resort zone to the north the open ocean lies in front of the Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya, the Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort and the Papaya Playa Project.

Tell our travel advisors what should be outside the window.

When it is at its best: from December to April. That is the dry season: warm days, little rain, clear cenotes.

When it is cheap: from September to November. Those are the months with the lowest rates, and the beach is very nearly yours alone.

When to book early: over Christmas and New Year, in Easter week and around the Día de Muertos in early November.

And whatever the date: the suitespot benefits apply in October exactly as they do in February.

How long to stay: five nights – two for the beach, one for the ruins of Tulum and Cobá, one for the cenotes and one for Sian Ka'an. Under three nights the journey barely pays, because getting from the airport to the beach road takes time.

In practice: at four of the eight hotels the benefits apply from the first night, at the other four from at least two nights – exactly half the selection. With five nights planned it makes no difference anyway.

Points and status, though, you collect rarely here: only three of the eight hotels belong to a programme – Hilton Honors the Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya and the Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort, Marriott Bonvoy the Papaya Playa Project.

Ruins, cenotes and exclusive services at a 5-star hotel

What our travel advisors arrange most often in Tulum is the early morning at the ruins: the site above the cliff opens at eight, and for the first hour you have it almost to yourself – after that it gets hot and busy.

Add to that: the cenotes inland, Gran Cenote and Dos Ojos for the clear water, Cenote Calavera for the jump in; the great pyramid of Cobá; and a boat trip through Sian Ka'an, where the Maya canals run through the reeds.

And the food: cochinita pibil from the earth oven, the fish tacos on the beach road – and in the evening a table at one of the restaurants that have made Tulum known far beyond Mexico.

Breakfast for two is included at all eight; at the Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort it applies per guest, at the Mi Amor Tulum as a continental breakfast.

On top come the upgrade chance and late check-out – and at every hotel its own extra, listed above. We register your VIP status before arrival.
