This hotel sets two conditions, and they pull in different directions. Anyone who knows both books differently from what looks obvious at first.
The first condition pulls the stay longer: it starts at two nights. A single overnight on the way from Avignon to the coast is not provided for here.
The second pulls the category down – and that is the surprise: of seven categories, exactly one looks expressly onto the Luberon. And it is not the largest but the 30 square metre suite. The hotel’s largest suite measures 65 – and does not carry the Luberon in its name.
So anyone arriving with the obvious booking – largest suite, one night – is wrong on both counts.
And then the arithmetic that makes the first condition bearable:
• The 50 US dollar credit applies to the stay, not per night. Spread over the two nights you have to book anyway, that is 25 US dollars a night – so the condition dilutes the benefit rather than doubling it.
• The other way round: breakfast for two people comes on both mornings, and early check-in and late check-out (subject to availability) turn two nights into almost three days.

Where to stay in Gordes: outside the village, above the valley
The Les Bories Gordes lies outside the village – a village this size has no districts anyway. What it does have is the difference between being in Gordes and above Gordes, and this hotel is on the second side: outside, with the village in view rather than all around.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants quiet in the evening and has a car during the day – the villages of the Luberon all lie twenty minutes apart.
What is within reach: Sénanque abbey of 1148, four kilometres to the north, a Cistercian church without a single ornament and a lavender field in front of it; the Village des Bories, a cluster of restored dry-stone huts built without a drop of mortar – and the name this hotel carries too; and Roussillon, ten kilometres east, where the old ochre quarries stand red, orange and violet in the woods.
For orientation: Avignon is about forty kilometres away, roughly an hour on the country roads, and the TGV stops there. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, one of the most powerful karst springs in the world, is a good quarter of an hour.
Rooms and suites: the best hotel in Gordes from the inside
The Les Bories Gordes offers seven categories, three of them suites. Sizes range from 20 to 65 square metres.
At the top sit two suites: the Horizon Suite at 65 square metres and the Serenity Suite at 55. Below them follow the Lilly Room at 35, the third suite at 30, the Villa Champêtre Room at 25 and a room at 20 square metres.
And here is the point that decides the choice: from only one single category do you actually look out on the Luberon. It is the Or des Sauges suite at 30 square metres – the smallest of the three suites and 35 square metres smaller than the Horizon Suite.
Two notes that save time when booking:
• Name the floor area as well. The name Or des Sauges also belongs to a room – the suite with the Luberon in its name is the one at 30 square metres.
• The smallest category does not name the Luberon. If you want the ridge, say so in advance.

Gordes is the best known of them, and it looks the way it does today because it once nearly disappeared: after the Second World War half its lanes stood empty. • Dry-stone building. The bories are huts of flat limestone slabs, stacked without mortar, with domes that have held for centuries. Twenty of them stand together at the Village des Bories.
• Sénanque abbey. One of the three Cistercian churches of Provence, built in 1148, and the only one still inhabited. Nothing inside is decorated – that is deliberate, and it is why the space feels larger than it is.
• The ochre. Colour earth was quarried between Roussillon and Rustrel until 1930; the pits are open, and the paths lead through gorges in seventeen shades of red.
