Brand new in the Aravalli hills near Sisarma is the Fairmont Udaipur Palace, which opened in July 2025. Rockwood Hotels & Resorts developed it in the style of Mewar’s fortresses, and its 327 rooms are spread over 18 acres and the Surya, Chandra and Agni Mahal wings. By day you move between the infinity pool and the pool bar in the Ivory Pool Garden; in the evening you try Mewar cuisine at Zaikaa, with a signature platter of 56 dishes, or take a seat at the chef’s table of Dastaan Asian Omakase. You end the day on the Sitara terrace with champagne, cigars and jazz, looking out over the hills.
Fairmont Udaipur Palace · Rooms & suitesAt the Raffles Udaipur you have been able to choose between island and shore since June 2, 2025. Of the 137 rooms and suites, 101 are on the private island in Udai Sagar Lake, while the mainland wing Raffles Lakeshore Udaipur adds 28 rooms, 8 suites and an infinity pool by the lake. The cuisine of the region has a prominent advocate in Udaipur. The Taj Lake Palace Udaipur was built from 1743 to 1746 under Maharana Jagat Singh II as the summer palace Jag Niwas, on an island of around 4 acres in Lake Pichola. In the 1960s Maharana Bhagwat Singh had it converted into a hotel with the design consultant Didi Contractor; Taj has run it since 1971, and it was restored again in 2000. Fritz Lang filmed “The Tiger of Eschnapur” here in 1959, followed in 1983 by the Bond film “Octopussy”. Some of the “Royal Butlers” are descended from families of the former palace staff.
The Oberoi Udaivilas UdaipurThe two palace resorts on the shore are younger luxury hotels, but no less handmade. The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur was built in 2002 by local craftsmen in the Mewar style, with domes, pavilions and colonnades across 30 acres of gardens – opposite the City Palace of the former capital of the Kingdom of Mewar. The Leela Palace Udaipur opened in April 2009 as a newly built palace on the shore, designed with chhatris, jharokhas, Thikri mirror work and lapis lazuli.
The Taj Lake Palace Udaipur holds three Michelin Keys, the highest distinction. The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur and the Raffles Udaipur hold two Michelin Keys; the Forbes Travel Guide also lists both as “Recommended”.
