Rambagh Palace Jaipur · RambaghIn Jaipur we recommend the Rambagh Palace Jaipur, the former residence of the maharajas amid large palace gardens, or The Leela Palace Jaipur near Amber Fort. In Jodhpur you sleep at the Umaid Bhawan Palace, where the Maharaja’s family still lives in one wing. The newest of the luxury hotels in Rajasthan is a palace in the Aravalli hills near Sisarma, around 45 minutes from Udaipur airport: the Fairmont Udaipur Palace, open since July 2025, follows the fortress architecture of Mewar. The 327 rooms are spread across three wings, Surya, Chandra and Agni Mahal, and between the pools there are courts for padel, pickleball and tennis – our tip if you like to stay active on your trip.
Fairmont Udaipur Palace · Rooms & suitesIf you want to stay by the water, Raffles Udaipur lets you sleep on its private island in Udai Sagar Lake or, since June 2025, in the mainland wing Raffles Lakeshore Udaipur, with an infinity pool by the lake and the Belvedere rooftop bar for sundowners. If you want complete privacy at a 5-star hotel on Lake Pichola, book one of the three Arq by The Leela villas with their own pool at The Leela Palace Udaipur, added in 2024.
In Jaipur, Raffles Jaipur is the intimate choice with just 50 rooms and suites, India’s second Raffles since July 2024. The Leela Palace Jaipur, today a 5-star hotel in Jaipur, offers a fresh start: the former JW Marriott Jaipur Resort & Spa was comprehensively renovated and has welcomed guests since February 2021 as the first Leela in Rajasthan.
For fort romance with a large spa we recommend Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan, open since October 2021. You sleep in a 14th-century fort; the spa now occupies the former women’s palace, the Zanana Mahal, and the Rajawat Room bar the men’s palace, the Mardana Mahal.
In Rajasthan every one of the 15 hotels in this selection has a pool – the real question is whether you want one of your own.
The Oberoi Rajvilas Jaipur · PoolPrivate pools are available at several hotels, including two 5-star hotels in Jaipur. For couples we recommend The Leela Palace Jaipur: its Royal Villas have a private plunge pool with a Jacuzzi. At The Oberoi Rajvilas Jaipur private pools come with selected rooms, tents and villas, and all guests can use a temperature-controlled 21-metre pool with elephant water spouts. At Suján Sher Bagh the Royal “Sher” and the Imperial “Raj Bagh” suites each come with a heated private plunge pool.
The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur · PoolFor all guests the main pools are often the picture that stays with you after a trip through Rajasthan’s luxury hotels – above all in Udaipur, with views of the water. The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur, a 5-star hotel on Lake Pichola, has a temperature-controlled main pool in Mughal style and, next to it, an adults-only spa pool. Raffles Udaipur offers a temperature-controlled outdoor pool with a pool bar on the island and an infinity pool on the lake in the Lakeshore wing. At the Taj Lake Palace Udaipur mango trees line the outdoor pool by the water.
Two more luxury hotels in Rajasthan have indoor and outdoor pools, both with a kids club and so our tip for families: the Rambagh Palace Jaipur and Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan. The Fairmont Udaipur Palace also has a kids club, along with the Ivory Pool with its pool bar, an infinity pool and an event pool.
Then look at the room category, not just the hotel. At The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur the Kohinoor and Luxury suites have a private pool, and the Premier rooms with a view of the City Palace or the garden a semi-private one. It starts for less at Raffles Jaipur, from 207 €: every room there has a balcony with an outdoor bathtub or a plunge pool. Ask our travel advisors specifically for a category with a plunge pool.
Many spas in Rajasthan make use of the spaces their buildings come with. Our tip for a large spa: the Six Senses Spa at Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan occupies the Zanana Mahal, the former women’s palace, and including the gym covers around 2,800 m², with a steam bath, sauna, cold and relaxation pools, Ayurveda programmes and an aerial yoga pavilion. At the Taj Lake Palace Udaipur the J Wellness Circle even includes a spa boat on the lake.
Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan · SpaYou can relax under canvas in two places. The Jungle Spa at Suján Sher Bagh stands beneath old peepal trees and offers Ayurvedic therapies and massages with natural oils; Tatler lists it among its 101 Best Spas. At The Leela Palace Udaipur Tishya by The Leela has five therapy tents with silk, linen and thikri mirror work, separate tents for yoga and meditation, and therapy suites with a private pool and views of Lake Pichola.
If you are looking for Ayurveda, book in Udaipur or Jaipur. The Raffles Spa at Raffles Udaipur has six treatment rooms including a couples’ suite and focuses on Ayurveda-inspired treatments. Aujasya by The Leela at The Leela Palace Jaipur draws on ancient Indian healing traditions.
Both Oberoi hotels, two 5-star hotels in Rajasthan, run Asmi by Oberoi: at The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur with an adults-only spa pool and private yoga sessions, at The Oberoi Rajvilas Jaipur with yoga and meditation in the gardens – there for hotel guests only and bookable 24 hours in advance.
For heat and cold in turn: the Fairmont Udaipur Palace has a spa of around 1,100 m², with cold plunge pools, a steam room, sauna and indoor Jacuzzi. The Raffles Spa at Raffles Jaipur measures around 620 m², with hot and cold mineral pools, and at the Fairmont Jaipur the Ruhab Spa has a hammam and a hot-spring bath.
The grand hotel restaurants in Rajasthan often cook from the recipes of the royal houses – and turn the evening into a performance. Jamavar at The Leela Palace Jaipur, formerly Mohan Mahal, serves India’s royal cuisines by candlelight only, beneath some 350,000 hand-cut thikri mirrors and 18-carat gold leaf, accompanied by live instrumental music; the menu features thalis and dishes inspired by shikaar cuisine and ceremonial banquets.
Rambagh Palace Jaipur · DiningAt The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur mentor chef Vineet Bhatia MBE is behind Mewar by Vineet, which tells the story of Mewar’s cuisine from the noble houses to the rural communities. Sawai Kitchen at Raffles Udaipur cooks from recipes handed down in Rajasthan’s royal households. At the Rambagh Palace Jaipur royal cuisine is served in Suvarna Mahal, the former ballroom with frescoes and chandeliers; also on the palace grounds is Steam, set in a restored steam train.
Suján Sher Bagh · DiningUnder the open sky, evenings at many luxury hotels in Rajasthan are especially atmospheric. At Suján Sher Bagh much of the food comes from the camp’s own organic garden – served in the dining tent or by the campfire. At The Leela Palace Udaipur you dine at Sheesh Mahal on the terraces by Lake Pichola, and at the Umaid Bhawan Palace Risala looks out over the palace gardens and Mehrangarh Fort.
If you fancy a change from Indian cuisine, book a table on the open-air terrace The Amber Terrace at The Leela Palace Jaipur, with dim sum, sushi, robata and teppanyaki. At Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan the menus at Roohani change with guest chefs, and Raffles Jaipur has Sehara, a Mediterranean rooftop restaurant with views of the Aravalli hills.
At no extra cost: you pay the same rate as booking direct with the hotel – the suitespot benefits come on top, free of charge.
For a sundowner we recommend Promenade at The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur on Lake Pichola. Raffles Udaipur has two bars modelled on Raffles Singapore, the Long Bar and the Writers Bar, plus the rooftop bar Belvedere in the Lakeshore wing. At Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan, The Rajawat Room sits in the Mardana Mahal, the former men’s palace; at sunset, head up to the Viewing Gallery above Barwara Lake.
If you would rather end the evening among books, choose one of the library bars. At The Oberoi Rajvilas Jaipur the Rajwada Library Bar, with leather-bound books, maharaja lithographs, chess and backgammon, is open from 5 to 11 pm. The Fairmont Jaipur has the library bar Aza with vintage cognacs, and the Library Bar at The Leela Palace Udaipur stocks rare single malts.
Udaipur is the place for it. At the Taj Lake Palace Udaipur you glide across Lake Pichola over dinner aboard the royal ceremonial barge Gangaur. At The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur you can dine privately in the Lakeside Pavilion by the lake with traditional live music, or at a private dinner by the pool for up to four guests. Talk to our travel advisors if you would like to plan your room and your evening together.
In the middle of Lake Pichola stands the Taj Lake Palace Udaipur. Maharana Jagat Singh II had it built on an island between 1743 and 1746 as the summer palace Jag Niwas. In the 1960s Maharana Bhagwat Singh converted it into a hotel with design consultant Didi Contractor; Taj has run it since 1971, and it was restored again in 2000. Film fans know the palace from Fritz Lang’s “The Tiger of Eschnapur” (1959) and the Bond film “Octopussy” (1983).
Taj Lake Palace Udaipur · PicholaThe Rambagh Palace Jaipur was built in 1835 as a garden house for the wet nurse of Prince Ram Singh II, later became a royal hunting lodge and, from 1925, the main residence of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II. After independence he had it converted into India’s first luxury palace hotel; Taj has run it since 1972. Around 19 hectares of Mughal gardens with peacocks surround the palace.
Umaid Bhawan Palace · Cantt AreaMaharaja Umaid Singh commissioned the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur in 1929 to create work during a famine; the Art Deco palace, designed by Henry Vaughan Lanchester, was completed in 1943. It is among the largest private palaces in the world. Part of it has been a hotel since 1977, managed by Taj since 2004, and the maharaja’s family still lives in the former zenana wing; a palace museum is also part of the complex. At its centre is a rotunda with a 105-foot dome, and murals of the Ramayana decorate the throne room.
Two forts are now luxury hotels. Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan is a 14th-century fort with two palaces, Mardana and Zanana Mahal, and two temples; more than 750 artisans spent almost a decade restoring it. The Alila Fort Bishangarh is a warrior fort around 230 years old on a granite hill, once an outpost protecting the kingdom of Jaipur. It was restored over around eight years using more than 90 percent local materials, and the library now occupies the fort’s former operations centre.
The newer buildings, too, tell of old Rajasthan. The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur, a 5-star hotel on Lake Pichola, was built in 2002 by local craftsmen with domes, pavilions and colonnades in Mewar style. On the grounds of The Oberoi Rajvilas Jaipur stands a Shiva temple around 300 years old, and Raffles Jaipur is a modern reinterpretation of a zenana in white marble.
Michelin Keys are awarded to hotels, not restaurants. In Rajasthan one hotel holds three Michelin Keys, the highest level: the Taj Lake Palace Udaipur in Lake Pichola.
The Oberoi Udaivilas UdaipurTwo Michelin Keys go to six hotels. Our tip in Udaipur is The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur on the shore of Lake Pichola, and for an island all to yourself Raffles Udaipur in Udai Sagar Lake. In Jaipur, our pick among the two-Key hotels is The Leela Palace Jaipur near Amber Fort.
The Forbes Travel Guide lists three hotels as “Recommended”: The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur, Raffles Udaipur and Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan.
Then there are awards and readers’ polls. The Oberoi Rajvilas Jaipur, a 5-star hotel on the edge of Jaipur with one Michelin Key, was named Best Hotel in the World at the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2024, and the Rambagh Palace Jaipur was named the best hotel in the world in the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best 2023.
Suján Sher Bagh is a member of Relais & Châteaux. And in January 2024 Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan was certified for sustainability at the highest level by Control Union, accredited by the GSTC.
Rajasthan is best explored in several stops, and our 15 hotels are spread across four main areas.
The Oberoi Rajvilas Jaipur · Jagdish ColonyIn and around Jaipur there are six luxury hotels, plus a fort north of the city. In the heart of Jaipur, the Rambagh Palace Jaipur stands on Bhawani Singh Road, surrounded by around 19 hectares of palace gardens. The Oberoi Rajvilas Jaipur lies in around 13 hectares of gardens on the edge of the city, about 30 minutes from the airport. Our recommendation: the Rambagh Palace Jaipur.
The Leela Palace Jaipur · KukasIn Kukas, between Jaipur and the Aravalli hills, there are three hotels: The Leela Palace Jaipur near Amber Fort, the small Raffles Jaipur and the Fairmont Jaipur, around 7.5 kilometres from Amber Fort. Our recommendation: The Leela Palace Jaipur.
In Udaipur the lake decides. Three hotels stand on Lake Pichola: the Taj Lake Palace Udaipur on the island of Jag Niwas, reachable only by boat, The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur on the shore opposite the City Palace and The Leela Palace Udaipur, where all 80 rooms face the lake. Our recommendation: The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur.
Away from Lake Pichola, Raffles Udaipur has its own island of around 8.5 hectares in Udai Sagar Lake, 20 to 26 minutes from the airport – our tip if you are looking for peace and quiet. The Fairmont Udaipur Palace stands in the Aravalli hills near Sisarma.
At no extra cost: you pay the same rate as booking direct with the hotel – the suitespot benefits come on top, free of charge.
In Jodhpur you stay at the Umaid Bhawan Palace on Chittar Hill above the city, in around 10.5 hectares with large gardens; from the Risala restaurant the view reaches all the way to Mehrangarh Fort.
At Ranthambore National Park there are two luxury hotels. Suján Sher Bagh lies right on the edge of the park near Sawai Madhopur; the transfer from Sawai Madhopur station takes around 25 minutes and is included, and from Jaipur it is about three hours by road. Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan is in Chauth Ka Barwara, around 30 minutes from the park and about two and a half hours from Jaipur airport. Our recommendation: Suján Sher Bagh for the safari, Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan for the fort and the spa.
In Udaipur, a waterside location says little about the price. On a private island in Udai Sagar Lake you stay at Raffles Udaipur from 232 €, at the Taj Lake Palace Udaipur in the middle of Lake Pichola from 374 € and at The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur on the shore opposite the City Palace from 411 €.
In Jaipur, too, it pays to compare: in Kukas the Fairmont Jaipur starts from 122 €, The Leela Palace Jaipur from 190 € and Raffles Jaipur from 207 €, all in the same district. Choose the stops on your route first and the hotel second.
The selection starts at 92 € at the Hyatt Regency Jaipur Mansarovar and goes up to 728 € at Suján Sher Bagh. Seven of the fourteen luxury hotels with a current rate start below 250 € a night; for The Leela Palace Udaipur our travel advisors will quote you the rate on request.

Ideally in several places: in Jaipur (our recommendation: Rambagh Palace Jaipur), in Udaipur on Lake Pichola (our recommendation: The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur), in Jodhpur at the Umaid Bhawan Palace and at Ranthambore National Park (our recommendation for the safari: Suján Sher Bagh).
The historic palaces are the Taj Lake Palace Udaipur (built 1743 to 1746), the Rambagh Palace Jaipur (from 1835) and the Umaid Bhawan Palace (completed in 1943 and still home to the maharaja’s family today). Among the forts we recommend Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan, dating from the 14th century, with its spa in the former women’s palace.
With children we recommend Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan, with a kids’ club and indoor and outdoor pools, near Ranthambore National Park. In Jaipur the Rambagh Palace Jaipur has a kids’ club and babysitting, in Udaipur the Fairmont Udaipur Palace a kids’ club. Babysitting is also available at The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur. Breakfast for two and an upgrade subject to availability are included everywhere.
Suján Sher Bagh lies right on the edge of the park near Sawai Madhopur; the transfer from the station takes around 25 minutes and is included, and from Jaipur it is about three hours by road. Six Senses Fort Barwara Rajasthan is around 30 minutes from the park in a 14th-century fort, about two and a half hours from Jaipur airport.
Among the luxury hotels in Rajasthan there is no single best one for everybody – it depends on your route and who you travel with. Couples stay at The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur on Lake Pichola, where every room has a personal butler and suites come with their own pool. If you want to see tigers, book the tented camp Suján Sher Bagh right by Ranthambore National Park. Families are well looked after at the Rambagh Palace Jaipur with its kids’ club and babysitting, and if you want to sleep in a palace where a maharaja’s family still lives, choose the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur. Our travel advisors will gladly discuss with you personally which hotels suit your route.
Two 5-star hotels stand right on the shore in Udaipur: The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur opposite the City Palace, with the Promenade sundowner bar and suites with their own pool, and The Leela Palace Udaipur, where all 80 rooms face the lake. In the middle of the lake, reachable only by boat, stands the Taj Lake Palace Udaipur, the former summer palace Jag Niwas, with three Michelin Keys.
