The Grand Hotel Parker’s Naples has been a hotel since 1870. At the end of the 19th century, the English marine biologist George Parker Bidder III took over what was then the Hotel Tramontano Beau Rivage; after World War II, the lawyer Francesco Paolo Avallone rescued the house, and his family still owns it. After the 1980 earthquake it was restored under the supervision of the heritage authority, and Empire antiques and bronzes from the Fonderia Chiurazzi still define it today.
Next door, the Scotswoman Emilia Macpherson opened “Macpherson’s Pension Britannique” in 1870 – today’s De Bonart Naples. Its guests included Arthur Conan Doyle, Virginia Woolf, George Bernard Shaw and Prince Umberto of Savoy; in 1943 the building served first the German, then the American command as headquarters.
