The 18 Best Luxury Hotels in Puglia

A pool all to yourself comes with some suites at the luxury hotels in Puglia. At the estates a pool is always part of the package. Trullo dei Pumi Puglia has a heated 75 m² saltwater pool. Our tip for families with small children is Masseria Petrarolo Puglia: its pool measures 18 by 16 metres, with a beach entry, three depths and a toddler area, plus a plunge pool on the roof.

And if you’d rather swim in the sea: Canne Bianche Lifestyle Hotel has its own access to an unspoilt cove, behind its blue wooden door. Borgo Egnazia runs two private beach clubs, and Masseria Torre Maizza, a Rocco Forte Hotel, Bari takes guests by shuttle to Lido Bambù in Capitolo.

Among the region’s great spas is the Vair Spa at Borgo Egnazia. It covers 2,000 m² on a tufa-stone lower level and works with Apulian rituals, naturopathy, aromatherapy and Kneipp treatments; the programmes carry names in the local dialect, such as the Cundende massage. At La Sommita Hotel Ostuni the millstones of the old olive mill stand in the wellness area, which offers massages, rituals and a hammam.Canne Bianche Lifestyle Hotel · SpaThe thalasso spa at Hotel Masseria San Domenico, a 5-star hotel near Savelletri, puts the sea itself to work: seawater and algae come from the Adriatic 500 metres away, and the signature San Domenico Ritual combines seawater with olive oil. The Naturalis Wander SPA at Naturalis Bio Resort works with ingredients from the estate’s own land – a private spa in a former barn, for hotel guests only, with treatments based on aloe vera, olive oil, wine and wheat.

The spa at Vista Ostuni measures 350 m² beneath vaults with Bisazza mosaics, with a heated indoor pool, whirlpool, sauna and Biologique Recherche treatments; yoga takes place in the olive garden or on the roof. At Baglioni Masseria Muzza the spa has a steam bath, covered pool, Finnish sauna, ice fountain and four treatment rooms. The Irene Forte Spa at Masseria Torre Maizza, a Rocco Forte Hotel, Bari occupies a restored olive mill and uses products made with ingredients from the organic farm of Verdura Resort.

The Aqua Spa at Canne Bianche Lifestyle Hotel combines sauna, Turkish bath, a whirlpool with neck jets and experience showers with aroma and colour therapy; as “My Private Aqua Spa” you can book it exclusively. Book with suitespot and a 60-minute Aqua Spa experience per guest is among the benefits there.

The 14 hotels start at 134 € a night at Canne Bianche Lifestyle Hotel and go up to 693 € at Masseria Torre Maizza, a Rocco Forte Hotel, Bari; half of them are at 308 € or less. The four estates are in a league of their own: for 2,710 € to 4,400 € a night you rent the entire house with pool, garden and staff on request.

Included at all 14 luxury hotels: daily breakfast for two – at Borgo Egnazia in Quattro Torri or La Frasca – and an upgrade on arrival, subject to availability. At 13 hotels early check-in and late check-out are also possible, subject to availability. At five hotels the benefits require a stay of two nights, for example at Masseria Palombara Relais & Spa Oria, Naturalis Bio Resort and Castle Elvira Trepuzzi.

Hotel credits are given in US dollars. 100 US dollars are offered at four hotels, among them Borgo Egnazia, where the credit is for food and drink. Our tip for suites is Masseria Torre Maizza, a Rocco Forte Hotel, Bari: for two nights or more you get a further 100 US dollars there, though not on all rates. Five more hotels give 50 US dollars, for example Masseria Palombara Relais & Spa Oria.

The four estates come with their own package: a 500 € concierge credit per stay, private pool and terrace, exclusive leisure and sports facilities, a property manager with additional staff on request and, if you wish, a private chef; the chef’s service as well as food and drink are charged separately. When which hotels are open: many luxury hotels in Puglia operate seasonally. Baglioni Masseria Muzza opens from around mid-April to mid-October, while Castle Elvira Trepuzzi closes in February and March and runs six suites in winter mode from 1 November.

Our tip for autumn and winter: Tivoli Palazzo 1880 Lecce, open all year, with a heated saltwater indoor pool. Due Camini at Borgo Egnazia is open all year too.

How long to stay: for a trip between 5-star hotels in Puglia, plan five to seven nights – that leaves time for the coast and the Valle d’Itria and for a few days in Lecce and Salento. If you rent an estate, you’ll be staying at least a week anyway.
