Your guide to the best luxury hotels in Spain

Spain has many faces: Madrid and Barcelona live for museums and long evenings, on Mallorca and Ibiza the coves set the pace, the Costa del Sol tempts with beaches and golf, in the Canaries you can swim even in January, and in La Rioja the wines mature. So if you are looking for a 5-star hotel in Spain, choose the destination first: city, island, coast or country estate.Monument Hotel BarcelonaMonument Hotel BarcelonaThe luxury hotels in Spain are as varied as its landscapes. For city breaks we recommend Madrid with the Mandarin Oriental Ritz Madrid, for beach holidays with children the Costa del Sol with the Marbella Club Hotel and its kids’ club. Couples find peace on Mallorca at Cap Rocat Mallorca, an adults-only fortress, and food lovers in Barcelona stay at the Monument Hotel Barcelona, home to Lasarte, the restaurant of Martín Berasategui.

Whatever you choose: when you book through suitespot, you receive exclusive benefits at all our luxury hotels in Spain, depending on the hotel such as breakfast for two, a room upgrade subject to availability or a hotel credit.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

Where to stay in Spain: cities, islands and coasts – the right region for your 5-star hotel

Which of the best hotels in Spain suit you depends first of all on the destination.Mandarin Oriental BarcelonaMandarin Oriental BarcelonaMadrid is the place for art and tapas. You will find a garden and spa on the Castellana at the Rosewood Villa Magna Madrid, live music at the lobby bar of the Gran Hotel Inglés Madrid and a rooftop pool overlooking the Royal Palace at the Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques Madrid.Sofitel Barcelona SkipperSofitel Barcelona SkipperBarcelona combines city and beach: on Passeig de Gràcia you stay at the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona with its rooftop pool, right by the sea in Barceloneta at the Sofitel Barcelona Skipper. Couples book The Serras Hotel Barcelona at Port Vell, in the building that housed Picasso’s first studio.

On Mallorca you choose between old town, mountains and sea: in Palma you stay at the Can Bordoy Grand House Palma de Mallorca with its garden and rooftop pool, in Calvià at the Castell Son Claret Mallorca, a castle at the foot of the Tramuntana. In the northeast, the Pleta de Mar Mallorca welcomes adults only.

On Ibiza, from the 7Pines Resort Ibiza on the cliffs of the west coast you look across the infinity pool to Es Vedrà. For a quieter stay, choose Santa Eulària des Riu and the Hotel Riomar Ibiza, right on the beach. On Formentera, the Teranka Formentera lies between pines and dunes on Playa Migjorn.

On the Costa del Sol you combine beach, golf and the old town of Marbella: ME Marbella has the Oasis beach club, while the Finca Cortesín Hotel Malaga in the hills of Casares has its own golf course. In Málaga you stay at the Gran Hotel Miramar Malaga, a 1926 palace on the bay.

Your suitespot benefits
  • Breakfast for two, every day
  • Room upgrade subject to availability
  • Hotel credit, e.g. US$100
  • Early check-in and late check-out
  • VIP service and personal advice
  • Points and status in the hotel programme
Over two nights, that adds up to around €500 in value on average – depending on hotel, rate and availability.

At no extra cost: you pay the same rate as booking direct with the hotel – the suitespot benefits come on top, free of charge.

In Seville, Granada and Córdoba you stay in the midst of Andalusian history: at the Hotel Alfonso XIII Seville, a neo-Mudéjar palace from 1929, at the Gran Hotel Claridge Granada opposite the cathedral or at the Hospes Palacio del Bailio Córdoba above Roman ruins.

On Tenerife and Gran Canaria it is swimming season all year round. For families we recommend the Royal Hideaway Corales Suites on the Costa Adeje with its kids’ club, for garden lovers the Hotel Botánico Tenerife with a view of the Teide. In Las Palmas you stay at the Santa Catalina Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a pink palace from 1890.

Valencia combines old town and city beach: the Only You Hotel Valencia is 100 meters from Plaza del Ayuntamiento, while families stay right on the beach at the Hotel Las Arenas Balneario Valencia, which has a kids’ club. In Alicante, the rooftop pool of the Hospes Amerigo Alicante looks out to the Castillo de Santa Bárbara.

The luxury hotels of the green north stand for art, food and coastline. In Bilbao, The Artist Grand Hotel of Art Bilbao faces the Guggenheim Museum; in San Sebastián, the Hotel Maria Cristina San Sebastian is where the stars of the film festival stay. Near Santiago de Compostela you sleep at A Quinta da Auga Santiago de Compostela, an 18th-century paper mill on the River Sar.

Wineries, fincas and country estates: luxury hotels in Spain away from the big destinations

Some addresses lie where no city sets the pace. If you are looking for a 5-star hotel in Spain in the countryside, you will find it among vineyards, olive groves and mountains.Torre del MarquesTorre del Marques · TeruelFor wine lovers: Torre del Marques, an 18th-century masía on its own wine estate in Aragon, holds three Michelin Keys. In the Priorat, the spa of the Gran Hotel Mas d'en Bruno Torroja del Priorat occupies the old wine and oil mill; on the Duero you stay at Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine Valladolid in a Romanesque abbey, and in the Rioja Alavesa at the Hotel Marques de Riscal Elciego, designed by Frank Gehry.

For peace in the countryside: Above the Sa Riera cove on the Costa Brava, the Finca Victoria Begur welcomes adults only. Inland, the suites of the Mas De Torrent Hotel have their own garden or pool, and in Andalusia the Finca La Bobadilla Granada resembles a white village among olive groves, complete with a kids’ club.

For fincas on the islands: In the northeast of Mallorca, Es Raco d'Arta sits on a 13th-century estate with an organic farm and vineyard; near Alaró, the Finca Banyols Mallorca occupies a 15th-century oil mill. On La Palma you sleep at the Hotel Hacienda De Abajo, a sugar hacienda full of art, and on Lanzarote at Cesar Lanzarote, the former farmhouse of the Manrique family.

Golf and skiing: Spain beyond the beach

Golfers stay at Camiral Golf & Wellness, right on the Stadium Course, where the Ryder Cup will be played in 2031. Skiers will find the Maribel Monachil in the Sierra Nevada with ski-in/ski-out access, and in the Catalan Pyrenees the Hotel AC Baqueira Ski Resort, around 50 meters from the gondola in Baqueira.

These luxury hotels in Spain have a pool – above the sea and on the roof

Most hotels have a pool; the view makes the difference. If you choose your 5-star hotel in Spain by its pool, you decide between sea views and a city panorama.Pool – Mett BarcelonaMett Barcelona · PoolAbove the sea: High above the port of Sóller, a hundred meters above the water, lies the adults-only infinity pool of the Jumeirah Mallorca. At the Hospes Hotel Maricel Mallorca the pool is built right into the rocks above the Mediterranean, and at Mett Barcelona on Tibidabo it seems to float above all of Barcelona.

On the city rooftops: In Seville you swim at Serras Seville with a view of the Giralda, in Barcelona on the roof terrace of The One Barcelona overlooking the Sagrada Família, and in Málaga in the infinity pool of the Only YOU Hotel Malaga above Calle Larios.

Spa & wellness at a 5-star hotel in Spain: thermal springs, monasteries and wine therapy

Water with a history: At the Castilla Termal Monasterio de Valbuena, the thermal spa lies in a 12th-century Cistercian monastery surrounded by its own vines. Fontsanta Mallorca uses natural thermal springs, and the spa of the Hotel Palau Fugit Girona is built into Girona’s first city wall.Castilla Termal Monasterio de ValbuenaCastilla Termal Monasterio de Valbuena · Valbuena de DueroFor whole spa days: we recommend luxury hotels on the coast with their own resort spa. On the Golden Mile you will find the Thalasso Spa of the Marbella Club Hotel and the Six Senses Spa of the Puente Romano Marbella. On Tenerife, The Oriental Spa Garden belongs to the Hotel Botánico Tenerife, and in the hills of Casares the Finca Cortesín Hotel Malaga has a Thai spa.

Dining in Spain’s luxury hotels: top chefs in the cities, on the islands and in wine country

In the cities, big names of Spanish cuisine cook in hotel restaurants. At the Monument Hotel Barcelona, Martín Berasategui runs the gourmet restaurant Lasarte with creative signature cuisine. In Madrid, Quique Dacosta serves tasting menus of sea and land at Deessa in the Mandarin Oriental Ritz Madrid; at the Hyatt Regency Hesperia Madrid, Dani García hides the 14-seat Smoked Room inside his Leña steakhouse, and at the Hotel Arts Barcelona Paco Pérez brings together sea, garden and mountains at Enoteca.Dining – Monument Hotel BarcelonaMonument Hotel Barcelona · DiningOn the islands: At the Royal Hideaway Corales Suites on Tenerife, El Rincón de Juan Carlos serves a tasting menu with sea views and San Hô Canarian-Asian cuisine; Erlantz Gorostiza cooks Basque-Canarian food at M.B in The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama. On Mallorca, Álvaro Salazar serves a single, changing tasting menu at VORO in the Cap Vermell Grand Hotel Mallorca, and in Palma Fernando Pérez Arellano cooks contemporary Mallorcan cuisine at Zaranda in the Es Princep Palma de Mallorca.

In wine country: In Ezcaray in La Rioja, Francis Paniego cooks at El Portal de Echaurren in the Echaurren Ezcaray, an inn his family has run since 1898. In Galicia, the glass cubes of Pepe Vieira Poio stand a few steps from Pepe Vieira’s restaurant above the Ría de Pontevedra, and at Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine Valladolid you dine in the Refectorio, the monks’ former dining hall.

Luxury hotels in Spain with a history: royal palaces, monasteries and fortresses

In Seville you stay at the Hotel Alfonso XIII Seville from 1929, in San Sebastián at the Hotel Maria Cristina San Sebastian, designed in 1912 by Ritz architect Charles Mewès.Mandarin Oriental Ritz MadridMandarin Oriental Ritz MadridMonasteries and convents: Near Pollença you stay at the Son Brull Hotel Mallorca in an 18th-century Jesuit monastery, in Palma at Convent de la Missió, a 17th-century convent. Above Palma stands the Castillo Hotel Son Vida Mallorca, a 13th-century castle, and in Marbella the San Luis fortress lies on the grounds of El Fuerte Marbella.
