The 77 Best Luxury Hotels in Tuscany

In the countryside a pool almost always comes with the stay. What sets the 5-star hotels in Tuscany apart is where you look while you swim – and whether the water is warm in spring as well.Relais Borgo Santo Pietro · PoolAbove the hills. Our tip for warm water with a view: the Belmond Castello di Casole, which keeps its panoramic infinity pool at around 28 to 30 degrees, with water toys for children. At the Relais Borgo Santo Pietro the infinity pool measures 100 m², is 2.8 metres deep, heated and chlorine-free; the three Pool Houses each have a pool of their own. At Castelfalfi three outdoor pools look out over the hills, joined in the spa by a heated indoor pool and an Infinity Vitality Pool.Borgo Pignano · PoolLooking down the valley. If you also want to swim lengths, book the Borgo Pignano between Volterra and San Gimignano: the heated saltwater infinity pool lies in an old limestone quarry below the villa, with a lap pool, a separate pool for children and private pools at the villas on the estate. The Hotel Lupaia near Montefollonico has a seasonal infinity pool on the edge of a valley.

By the sea. You can swim all year at the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte Viareggio: its rooftop infinity pool in blue marble, designed by Marco Casamonti, is heated in winter, with a sweeping view of the sea and the Apuan Alps. At the Hotel Il Pellicano the heated seawater pool sits on the cliffs by the Beach Club. Near Follonica you swim at The Sense Experience Resort in a 25-metre infinity pool with a sea view, heated to 28 degrees until 15 June and from 10 September.

Unusual. At the Oasyhotel Limestre you swim in summer in a natural wooden pool that floats on Lake San Vito; kayaks and SUP boards are included. Il Bottaccio Montignoso has its indoor pool in the middle of the restaurant, in the Sala della Piscina beneath wooden roof trusses. And at the Argentario Resort Porto Ercole the spa’s saltwater pool, at 28 degrees all year round, flows from inside to outside. Warm water from deep in the earth is as much a part of Tuscany as wine. At the Terme di Saturnia Resort, at the foot of medieval Saturnia, the spring is the heart of everything: the water travels underground for around 40 years before flowing at 37 degrees into the crater pool with its waterfalls. On top of that, the 5-star hotel has a Roman Bath with sauna and Turkish bath, a Medical Spa with diagnostics and cryotherapy, and dedicated programmes from detox to anti-ageing. The Thermal Pool Junior Suites have a spring-fed tub in their own garden.Terme di Saturnia Resort · SpaAt the Grotta Giusti Thermal Spa Resort Tuscany near Monsummano Terme you step into a natural thermal grotto: more than 200 metres long, with areas called Paradise, Purgatory and Hell between 28 and 34 degrees and a thermal lake at 36 degrees in which you can even dive. Up in the park an outdoor thermal pool of 750 m² awaits, with a waterfall and massage jets. The grotto has been named World’s Best Thermal Grotto Spa at the World Spa Awards several times, and booking through suitespot includes one entry per person per stay.Fonteverde · SpaThermal water with a view: opposite the village of San Casciano dei Bagni, the springs of Fonteverde rise around a portico that Ferdinando I de’ Medici had built in 1607; from the thermal pools in the park you look out over the Val d’Orcia. At the Bagni di Pisa, a 5-star hotel on Monte Pisano, you bathe in the restored baths of the grand dukes: in the Bagno di Minerva at 35 degrees, in the saltwater flotation pool or in a grotto whose pool was carved into the rock by hand; from the palace the view stretches as far as the Leaning Tower.

At the luxury hotels on the large estates, the spas are worlds of their own. Our tip for a whole spa day: the RAKxa Wellness Spa at Castelfalfi, 1,500 m² in size, with heated indoor and outdoor pools and open to guests aged 14 and over. The COMO Shambhala Retreat at the COMO Castello Del Nero combines thermal suites with a studio for yoga and Pilates. And the Spa Monasterii at the Castel Monastero brings together an indoor pool, a saltwater pool, a hammam and programmes from detox to thalasso across 1,000 m².

Many luxury hotels in Tuscany have set their spa within old walls. Our tip: the Essere Spa at the Belmond Castello di Casole in a vaulted former wine cellar, with free access when you book through suitespot. At the Villa la Massa Florence on the Arno, the Arno SPA works in the villa’s vaulted cellars, with products from the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella and iris from the hotel’s own garden, and at the Borgo Pignano the spa, La Cisterna SPA, is housed in the restored well house.

The estate itself often plays a part. At the Seed to Skin Spa of the Relais Borgo Santo Pietro the cosmetics come from the in-house laboratory; in 2024 it was named World’s Best Country House Hotel Spa at the World Spa Awards. The Hotel Borgo San Felice, a 5-star hotel in the Chianti, offers a Wine Therapy at its Botanic Spa. And for couples: just across the border, near Piegaro in Umbria, I Borghi dell'Eremo Piegaro always reserves its Eterea SPA exclusively for one couple or one group.

The selection starts at 141 € per night at the Hotel Indigo Florence and runs up to 1,395 € at the Castello di Reschio on the border with Umbria. Outside Florence, prices at the luxury hotels start at 147 € at the Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort and 160 € at the Locanda Rossa. Half of the hotels cost no more than 360 €, and a good quarter are at 500 € or more. The table shows a selection by area and price range. What’s included almost everywhere: daily breakfast for two at all 77 hotels, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability at 76 – at the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco it applies to suites – and early check-in and late check-out subject to availability at 71. At 14 luxury hotels the benefits apply from two nights, among them LA ROQQA Porto Ercole and the Hotel Lupaia; everywhere else they apply from the first night.

With hotel credit, the details matter: at most hotels it is 100 US dollars, frequently for food and drink. Castelfalfi works in euros: 90 € for the Olivina restaurant, and the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco 95 €. At the two Belmond hotels it is 100 US dollars, 220 in suites, plus a 500 US dollar voucher for your next Belmond booking with a booking value of 10,000 US dollars or more. At the Belmond Castello di Casole access to the spa and gym is free as well, and from the Belmond Villa San Michele a shuttle takes you to Florence.

A laid table instead of credit: at the Castello Banfi Il Borgo a two-course lunch comes with your stay, accompanied by the estate’s own wine. At the Grand Hotel Continental Siena there is a lunch or dinner for two from the Heritage Suite and two nights. The Castel Monastero serves a three-course lunch at La Cantina for up to two people from four nights and has a bottle of Castello di Monastero wine waiting as a welcome.

For the spa, the COMO Castello Del Nero adds 100 US dollars, at La Bandita Townhouse Pienza you use the private spa suite free of charge, with a bottle of Prosecco, and the Chapter Chianti Cavriglia gives 100 € per suite.

Points and status can be earned at 43 of the 77 luxury hotels, spread across seven programmes: the Leaders Club at 22 hotels (give your membership number when booking), Marriott Bonvoy at ten, I Prefer at seven, and SLH Invited, GHA Discovery, World of Hyatt and IHG One Rewards at one hotel each.

When the hotels are open: if you are looking for a 5-star hotel in Tuscany in the countryside or by the sea, check the opening dates, because many hotels operate seasonally. The Relais Borgo Santo Pietro welcomes guests from May to October, LA ROQQA Porto Ercole from mid-April to early November and the Hotel Il Pellicano in 2026 from 2 April to 26 October.

Closed in winter is, for example, the Hotel Lupaia, from December to mid-March. The Precise Tale Poggio Alla Sala Montepulciano closes from 15 October 2026 for a renovation lasting into 2027. The Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort, for example, is open all year round.

When it is at its most beautiful: that depends on what you are looking for. In spring the Val d’Orcia is green and the pools open; in summer the days belong to the sea and the evenings to the terraces. Autumn is harvest time in the vineyards, and several luxury hotels in the countryside, such as the Belmond Castello di Casole, the COMO Castello Del Nero and the Castel Monastero, offer truffle hunts. In winter the thermal pools steam in the cool air.

When to book a 5-star hotel in Tuscany early: for the days around the Palio in Siena on 2 July and 16 August, for August on the coast, and for the grape harvest in September and October.

How long to stay: a week, split between two hotels – four nights in the hills between the Chianti and the Val d’Orcia, three by the sea on the Versilia or the Argentario.
