The Serras Hotel Barcelona · Barri GòticWhich house suits you depends on how you want to experience Barcelona. For art and harbor views, we recommend The Serras Hotel Barcelona: 28 rooms in the building of Picasso’s first studio, whose original window now stands on the rooftop terrace above Port Vell. Food lovers book the Monument Hotel Barcelona on Passeig de Gràcia, with Martín Berasategui’s restaurant Lasarte on the ground floor. You recognize luxury boutique hotels in Barcelona less by a fixed number of rooms than by their signature: a building with its own history or a striking design, a restaurant with a concept of its own and a size that allows for personal service. The houses in this selection sit in two areas: in the old town between the Gothic Quarter and El Born, and in Eixample around Passeig de Gràcia, home to Gaudí’s Casa Milà and Casa Batlló.
Neri Hotel Barcelona · Barri GòticGothic Quarter: Between the Gothic Quarter and Marina Port Vell, The Serras Hotel Barcelona sits on Passeig de Colom, three minutes’ walk from La Rambla. In the heart of the quarter, on quiet Plaça de Sant Felip Neri and surrounded by the old Jewish quarter, you stay at the Neri Hotel Barcelona. And The Wittmore Barcelona hides on a narrow lane, with rooftop views of the dome of the Basílica de la Mercè and the sea.
Monument Hotel Barcelona · Dreta de l'EixampleEl Born and La Ribera: Directly opposite the Mercat de Santa Caterina stands The Barcelona EDITION, on the edge of El Born and close to the cathedral and the Picasso Museum. The ingredients for Veraz, the restaurant on the ground floor, come from the market hall across the street.
Eixample: Opposite Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera, the Monument Hotel Barcelona sits on Passeig de Gràcia, a few steps from Casa Batlló. On Gran Via you stay at Almanac Barcelona, also just steps from Passeig de Gràcia, or at the Cotton House Hotel Barcelona, two blocks from Passeig de Gràcia and within walking distance of Casa Batlló, La Pedrera and the Gothic Quarter.
The Roof on the 10th floor of The Barcelona EDITION has sliding glass walls and is open all year, with a small plunge pool and views of Santa Caterina, Santa Maria del Mar and the sea. Tables are not reserved there, so simply drop in for a drink between two sightseeing stops.
Our tip for art lovers is The Serras Hotel Barcelona. Francesc Daniel Molina designed the building in 1846; on the top floor, the young Pablo Picasso had his first studio and painted “Ciencia y Caridad” there. The restored studio window now stands on the rooftop. The building has been a hotel since 2015, and Eva Martínez’s interiors blend New York style with Catalan design.
Cotton House Hotel Barcelona · EixampleAcross from Gaudí, you stay at the Monument Hotel Barcelona: Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas built the listed Casa Enric Batlló between 1895 and 1896, and from 1986 it belonged to the Hotel Condes de Barcelona. After a complete renovation, with an initial design by Oscar Tusquets carried out by Carles Basso and Tote Moreno, the house is now run independently. The interiors are by Mercè Borrell.
Almanac Barcelona · Passeig de GràciaAt the Cotton House Hotel Barcelona, everything revolves around cotton. Cotton manufacturer Miquel Boada had Elies Rogent build the townhouse in 1879; in 1957 it became the seat of the Cotton Textile Foundation and gained four more floors with a cantilevered spiral staircase. After its restoration by Lázaro Rosa-Violán it opened as a hotel in 2015, and the rooms are named after cotton fabrics.
The Neri Hotel Barcelona goes back even further: it was created from a 12th-century palace that was merged with a Gothic manor house in the 18th century. The restoration uncovered the old courtyard and a significant sgraffito wall decoration. The house has been a member of Relais & Châteaux since 2012.
The Barcelona EDITION shows contemporary architecture: the firm OAB around Carlos Ferrater converted an office building into a hotel and gave it a black ceramic façade, while Lázaro Rosa-Violán designed the interiors under the creative direction of Ian Schrager; it opened in September 2018. At Sir Victor Barcelona, Juli Capella’s limestone façade catches the eye from the street, opening like the pages of a book. The house opened in 2003 as Hotel Omm and has been called Sir Victor since 2019.
At Almanac Barcelona, Jaime Beriestain works with Ibiza marble, oak and walnut, somewhere between Art Deco and mid-century; OAB converted two existing buildings on Gran Via for it. The Kimpton Vividora Barcelona carries a local signature: Barcelona studio El Equipo Creativo furnished it in terracotta and Mediterranean blue, inspired by the city’s apartments, with locally made furniture. It opened in February 2020 as Spain’s first Kimpton hotel.
Michelin Keys: Five houses in this selection hold one Michelin Key each, including The Serras Hotel Barcelona, the Monument Hotel Barcelona and The Wittmore Barcelona. Michelin Keys recognize hotels, not restaurants.
Granados 83 Barcelona has moved into a former hospital built in the Catalan industrial style of the mid-19th century. Around its glass-roofed courtyard, the house displays some 70 Hindu and Buddhist artworks from the 8th to 14th centuries and Roman mosaics from the collection of owner Jordi Clos. Some duplex suites also have a terrace with a semi-private pool. These categories are limited: our travel advisors will check which duplex suite is available for your dates.
With 22 rooms, three of them suites, The Wittmore Barcelona is among the smallest houses in this selection. The hotel welcomes adults only, the minibar is complimentary in every room, and DJs play in the library salon with fireplace and velvet sofas from Thursday to Saturday. In 2022, Septiembre Arquitectura gave the house a Mediterranean redesign with rattan, fabric-covered walls and a patio with a vertical garden.
The Wittmore Barcelona · Barri GòticThe Neri Hotel Barcelona also has 22 rooms, and across the way are six Casa Neri apartments with their own rooftop pool. The Serras Hotel Barcelona has 28 rooms; the Grand Suite Mediterraneo measures 100 m² and has three bathrooms. Le Nine, the lounge bar on the mezzanine with its library of art books, is open around the clock.
The Cotton House Hotel Barcelona, with 83 rooms including five suites, offers personal service in the truest sense: its tailoring service L’Atelier works with Santa Eulalia, and afternoon tea is served in the library in the former boardroom.
At no extra cost: you pay the same rate as booking direct with the hotel – the suitespot benefits come on top, free of charge.
Two houses in Eixample offer plenty of suites. At Almanac Barcelona, 30 of the 90 rooms are suites, and the terrace suites have private decks with fire pits. The Monument Hotel Barcelona counts 24 suites among its 84 rooms, including the 130 m² Penthouse Suite overlooking Passeig de Gràcia.
For food lovers, the Monument Hotel Barcelona is a fixed address: on the ground floor is the restaurant Lasarte, led by Martín Berasategui and holding three Michelin stars since 2017; the head chef is Paolo Casagrande. For something more relaxed, BERA por Martín Berasategui serves dishes to share, and on the Verbena Terrace on the 6th floor you can enjoy vermouth and tapas overlooking Passeig de Gràcia.
Monument Hotel Barcelona · DiningFor a meal with a view of the water, head to The Serras Hotel Barcelona: at the rooftop restaurant Informal, chef Alejandro Loaiza serves rice dishes, seafood and food from the charcoal grill. At Almanac Barcelona, Rodrigo de la Calle puts vegetables center stage at the restaurant Virens, complemented by rice dishes, organic meat and fish, plus house-made fermented drinks.
Neri Hotel Barcelona · DiningTwo houses share a chef: Alain Guiard cooks Mediterranean-Catalan cuisine at Contraban in The Wittmore Barcelona, with tables in the patio by the vertical garden, and at the “a” Restaurant of the Neri Hotel Barcelona, whose terrace looks onto Plaça de Sant Felip Neri. You also dine surrounded by greenery at the Cotton House Hotel Barcelona: the restaurant Batuar, with seasonal market cuisine, has a 300 m² planted courtyard terrace and its own wine cellar.
For cocktail evenings, we recommend three bars. You reach the Punch Room at The Barcelona EDITION via a spiral staircase; punches are served from silver bowls, and there is a billiard table and a fireplace. The Azimuth Rooftop Bar on the 8th floor of Almanac Barcelona mixes zodiac cocktails, with a telescope installation pointed at the Sagrada Família and the cathedral. And on the pool terrace of The Serras Hotel Barcelona, a DJ plays at sunset.
Lasarte at the Monument Hotel Barcelona is open Wednesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner. If you want to eat there, build one of those days into your trip and reserve as soon as your dates are set.
