The Post Ranch Inn stands on the Post family homestead: in the 1860s, William Brainard Post and his Ohlone wife Anselma settled here. In the early 1980s, Billy Post and his partners decided to turn the ranch into an inn, and local architect Mickey Muennig designed it in the spirit of organic architecture. The inn opened in April 1992 with 30 rooms, each named after the Post family and other Big Sur pioneers. Today you sleep in sod-roofed Ocean Houses, Tree Houses on stilts or glass-walled Cliff Houses, with no TVs and no alarm clocks.
Across the road, Hollywood producer Lawrence Spector opened Ventana Inn in 1975, designed by furniture designer Kipp Stewart as a retreat in harmony with the landscape. In early 2017, storms destroyed the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge and the inn closed; in the fall of 2017 it reopened as the first Alila resort in North America. Today it is called Alila Ventana Big Sur.
