Your guide to the best luxury hotel in Saint Helena

Saint Helena is the small town in the middle of the Napa Valley – one main street, wine estates to either side, and the hills behind them.Alila Napa ValleyAlila Napa Valley · KrugAnyone driving into the valley passes through almost by necessity: Route 29 is Main Street here, and the best-known estates of the valley lie left and right of it. For this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Saint Helena and chose one: the Alila Napa Valley, a 5-star hotel.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

The 5-star hotel in Saint Helena – who it suits

A night at the Alila Napa Valley costs €611. That includes breakfast for two, a 100 USD hotel credit, an upgrade, early check-in and late check-out subject to availability and a welcome gift. You keep earning World of Hyatt points and status benefits as usual.

Why we recommend it: it is the position in the valley. The Alila stands on Main Street, between the neighbouring estates of Charles Krug and Beringer – so you do not stay beside the vineyards, you stay inside them. The restaurant occupies a building from 1905 and is open to guests from outside as well. And every room has its own fire pit – in the Napa Valley, where the evenings turn cool even in summer, that is not decoration.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

Two of the benefits come with conditions worth knowing.

The upgrade applies at booking, not on arrival. It is granted subject to availability at the moment you book, and it does not run from a room into a suite. That is unusual – most hotels in this guide grant on arrival. In practice: the earlier you enquire, the more is possible.

Breakfast is à la carte. It covers two people at the Salvia Terrace & Bar and includes one breakfast dish and one drink each – coffee, juice or tea. No buffet, but a table outside.

And the view: five of the seven categories look out over the vines. Say so when you enquire and the majority becomes a commitment.

Where to stay in Saint Helena: on Main Street, between the estates

The Alila Napa Valley stands at 1915 Main Street, at the northern edge of Saint Helena.

Our recommendation for a first visit to the Napa Valley: stay in the middle of it, not at one end. From Saint Helena, Calistoga to the north and Yountville to the south are each a short drive – and the estates along Route 29 and the Silverado Trail all sit within a quarter of an hour.

The town itself is small. Main Street runs a few blocks of shops, bakeries and tasting rooms; you walk it without getting into the car.

San Francisco lies about 110 kilometres to the south-west – just under two hours depending on traffic. If you fly in, it is usually San Francisco or Oakland.

Rooms and suites: seven categories, five of them facing the vines

The hotel has seven categories, and two of them are suites.

The rooms are the Room, the Corner Room, the Streamside Room – by the creek –, the Beringer Room Fireplace and the Historic Manor Room. The two suites are the Suite and the Streamside Suite.

What decides here is the view: five of the seven categories look out over the vineyards – partly into the vines, partly onto the neighbouring estate. It is the same picture, and it is the reason to stay here.

Our travel advisors recommend the Vineyard View Room.

What a night at the luxury hotel in Saint Helena costs

A night at the luxury hotel in Saint Helena costs €611.

When it is at its best: September and October. That is the crush – the valley smells of must and the estates are open.

When it is busiest: June to October, and every weekend. Napa is a weekend destination out of the Bay Area; midweek it is a different valley.

When it is quietest: January to March. Yellow mustard flowers between the vines, the tastings are unhurried, and the fire pit on the terrace finally makes sense.

How long to stay: three nights. One for the estates along Route 29, one for the quieter Silverado Trail, one for Calistoga and the hot springs.

On the minimum stay: in the Napa Valley, weekends are often sold in two-night packages. Our travel advisors will confirm the conditions for your dates.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

Vineyards, fire pits and exclusive services at the 5-star hotel

The Napa Valley is barely 50 kilometres long and rarely more than five wide – and Saint Helena sits in the middle of it.

The first thing is the estates. The names that made the valley known lie around the town; two of them, Charles Krug and Beringer, are the hotel's immediate neighbours. You can walk to a tasting from here, and in the Napa Valley that is rare.

The second is Route 29. It is the valley's main axis and, in town, Main Street. If you prefer it quieter, take the parallel road: the Silverado Trail on the eastern side, with less traffic and smaller estates.

The third is the climate. Hot days, cool nights – the fog draws in from the bay in the evening. That difference is what makes the wine, and it also explains why every room here has a fire pit.

What our travel advisors arrange most often here are the tastings – the good estates take bookings only in advance – and the table at the hotel's restaurant, which guests from outside reserve as well.
