Waikiki around 1900: Walter Chamberlain Peacock opened Moana Surfrider Waikiki Beach in Victorian style in 1901. The banyan tree in the courtyard was planted in 1904, and from 1935 to 1975 the radio show “Hawaii Calls” went out to the world from here. In the Banyan Wing lobby, more than 200 artifacts tell the story of the house. A little farther west, a collection of beach bungalows became Halekulani Honolulu under Juliet and Clifford Kimball in 1917; today’s building opened in 1984.

Maui and Kapalua: In 1946, businessman Paul Fagan opened the six-room Ka’uiki Inn in Hāna, and a year later he brought his baseball team, the San Francisco Seals, here for spring training. It grew into Hana-Maui Resort. While The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua was being built in 1987, an ancient Hawaiian burial ground was found in the dunes; the hotel was moved inland and still cares for the Honokahua Preservation Site today.
