Waldorf Astoria Park CityWe list 11 hotels here with a median of 344 € a night – below Aspen (668 €), above Vail (287 €) and above Denver (224 €).The selection spreads across two mountains and two towns.
The Lodge at Blue SkyIt is largest in Deer Valley, the ski area southeast of town: the Stein Eriksen Lodge at Silver Lake, the Goldener Hirsch next door, the Montage Deer Valley on Marsac Avenue, the St. Regis Deer Valley on Deer Valley Drive and, sharing an address on Glencoe Mountain Way, the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley together with its Residences. Our recommendation: the Stein Eriksen Lodge.
To the northwest, at Canyons Village, stand the Waldorf Astoria Park City on Frostwood Drive, the Hyatt Centric Park City and the Pendry Park City with categories facing the peak and the resort. Our recommendation: the Waldorf Astoria.
In Old Town on Park Avenue sits the Hotel Thaynes, walking distance from Main Street. And some 25 kilometres north, in Wanship, the Lodge at Blue Sky.
The name above the door tells you which mountain you are on – and whether you are on one at all.
Six of our eleven addresses carry “Deer Valley” in the name. But Deer Valley is not a district of Park City; it is the ski area next door, with its own lifts and its own access road. Stay at the Stein Eriksen, the Goldener Hirsch, the Montage, the St. Regis or the Grand Hyatt and that is where you step into the snow in the morning – not on Main Street.
And one address is on no mountain at all: the Lodge at Blue Sky sits in Wanship, a good half hour north, on a ranch above the Weber River. It is also the most expensive address in our selection – 1,508 € against a median of 344 €. That is not a ski hotel with a premium; it is a different kind of holiday: horses, fly fishing, space.
Which gives you a clear order of business: choose the mountain first, then the hotel. Deer Valley for skiing from the door, Canyons Village for the gondola into the larger area, Old Town for evenings on foot.
The selection starts at 228 € at the Hotel Thaynes and 260 € at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley.
In nine of the 11 addresses the suitespot benefits apply from the first night; at the Hyatt Centric and the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley from the second.
From Salt Lake City airport it is thirty-five to fifty minutes depending on the weather – which makes Park City one of the fastest mountain destinations to reach in the Rockies.
Stein Eriksen Lodge Deer ValleyStay in Deer Valley if the day should begin at the lift: groomed runs, short distances, and in summer the trails around Silver Lake. Our recommendation: the Stein Eriksen Lodge, for us the first address on the mountain.
Stay at Canyons Village for the larger area and the gondola link. Our recommendation: the Waldorf Astoria Park City.
Stay in Old Town if the evening should happen on foot: Main Street with its timber facades, galleries and restaurants, and the film festival in January. Our recommendation: the Hotel Thaynes.
And stay in Wanship if the landscape is the point (recommendation: the Lodge at Blue Sky). For orientation: Salt Lake City is forty minutes away, Zion National Park a good four hours.
Up here you eat early and heartily, and the hotels carry a good part of it.
Montage Deer ValleyThe highest breakfast credit is at the Lodge at Blue Sky with 50 US dollars a day. Then come the Montage Deer Valley and the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley with its Residences at 45 US dollars each, there in Remington Hall; at the Waldorf Astoria it is 35, at the St. Regis Deer Valley and the Pendry 30 each.
At the Stein Eriksen Lodge, the Hyatt Centric, the Hotel Thaynes and the Goldener Hirsch breakfast for two is included – at the Goldener Hirsch in its own restaurant, The Kitz.
For the evening the way leads to Main Street: the old silver-mining buildings that now hold the town's kitchens, and the bars that open after the last lift.
The median is 344 € a night. The selection starts at 228 € at the Hotel Thaynes and runs to 1,508 € at the Lodge at Blue Sky – the ranch in Wanship, which is a class of its own.
In between sit the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley from 260 €, the Hyatt Centric from 270 € and the Pendry from 297 €; above them the Stein Eriksen Lodge from 629 € and the St. Regis Deer Valley from 508 €.
Against the other mountain destinations: Aspen sits at 668 €, Vail at 287 € and Denver at 224 €.
It costs least between the ski seasons – late spring with the slopes in flower, and autumn with the golden aspens, when the hiking and biking trails are open and the evenings still warm. Book early for the film festival in January, the Christmas days and the weeks around Presidents' Day – those are the most sought-after nights of the year.
And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.
What sets Park City apart from the great Colorado names is proximity: airport, old town and two ski areas all sit within an hour of each other.
