Our choice for Salvador is the Fera Palace Hotel Salvador on Rua Chile, in the historic centre of the upper town. In our ranking it stands at 4.4 out of 5, and a night starts at 148 euros. The hotel belongs to I Prefer.
Why we recommend it: Because it was the city’s first luxury hotel and is again: opened in 1934 as the Palace Hotel, an Art Deco wedge modelled on New York’s Flatiron Building, on Rua Chile, which counts as Brazil’s first street – Orson Welles, Pablo Neruda, Carmen Miranda and Jorge Amado stayed here. Today it has 81 rooms and suites, on the roof an infinity pool with the Fera Lounge and the view over the Bay of All Saints, and in the restaurant OMI the cooking of Bahia. The Pelourinho is ten minutes on foot, the Elevador Lacerda two. Our recommended category is called Deluxe Big.

The categories: 21 square metres in the Superior, 24 in the Deluxe, 31 in the Deluxe Big, 35 in the Suite – all four facing the city – and 45 in the Corner Suite with sea view. The list is short, but it is complete.
That means: our recommended category, the Deluxe Big at 31, is the middle – ten square metres above the entry point, four below the Suite, and like both to the city. Anyone wanting the bay from the bed has a single choice: the Corner Suite at 45, on the corner of the wedge where the two façades meet. All others see the bay from the roof.

Our advice: Book the Deluxe Big and let the upgrade bring the Suite – or book the Corner Suite if it has to be the bay. With 81 rooms and a single sea-view category the upgrade into the Corner Suite is the exception; anyone wanting it books it. And put the credit onto the roof: the Fera Lounge is where Salvador looks at the bay in the evening.
Where to stay in Salvador: on Rua Chile, two minutes from the Elevador Lacerda
The Fera Palace Hotel Salvador stands at Rua Chile 20 in the historic centre of Salvador, in the upper town – four hundred metres from the Elevador Lacerda, nine hundred from the Pelourinho, four kilometres from the beach at Barra and 22 from the airport.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone wanting to experience Bahia on foot and by ear – and for anyone who prefers a hotel with history to a hotel on the beach.
What lies within reach: the Pelourinho with the Largo, the Igreja de São Francisco and the drums on Tuesday evenings, ten minutes; the Elevador Lacerda of 1873, which descends 72 metres into the lower town, to the Mercado Modelo and the harbour, two minutes; and the Barra lighthouse with the beach where the city applauds the sunset, a quarter of an hour by taxi.
For orientation: Salvador airport is three-quarters of an hour away, the ferry to Itaparica leaves from the terminal below the lift, Praia do Forte with the turtles is an hour to the north. In Salvador one takes taxis; the upper town one walks.

What belongs to Bahia: Carnival. One week in February, the largest street party in the world, and the city is booked out before the year begins. That is not a warning but the calendar: anyone coming then comes for it. And the rain: from April to July Salvador gets most of the year’s rain, often in the afternoon – the roof stays open, and so do the churches.
When to ask early: for Carnival, for New Year’s Eve and for the Lavagem do Bonfim – and for the Corner Suite in any case.
How long to stay: two nights for Pelourinho, bay and Barra – three if Itaparica or Praia do Forte are added.
