Maldives water villa with or without a pool? The categories compared
An overwater villa with a pool is standard at many Maldives resorts, but not all of them. Without one, you still have the sea right below your deck. A private pool pays off if you would rather swim in the shade at midday than snorkel in the sun, or if you are traveling with children. One thing to watch when comparing: some resorts offer several categories, and only the second or third comes with a pool.

Sunrise or sunset: which way your overwater villa in the Maldives faces
Overwater villas usually line jetties that run out into the lagoon in different directions. On the east side you watch the sun rise from your bed or your pool; on the west side it sets behind your deck in the evening. Many resorts sell both sides as separate categories, recognizable by “Sunrise” or “Sunset” in the name. Early risers love the morning side, while anyone who likes a drink on the deck at dusk should pick the evening side.

Besides the compass point, the side of the jetty matters. Lagoon villas look onto calm turquoise water, ocean villas sit further out and closer to the house reef. At The Standard Huruvalhi Maldives the Ocean Overwater Villas are on the outer edge near the house reef, although the resort does not guarantee a sunset view from the deck. At Amilla Maldives the Reef Water Pool Villas have their own jetty straight to the house reef, and at Milaidhoo Island Maldives Baa Atoll steps take you down into the lagoon toward the reef.
Overwater villas for families and groups: two bedrooms above the lagoon
With children or friends, a single overwater villa soon feels small. That is when villas with two or three bedrooms come into their own, often with a larger pool and room for up to six guests. Good to know: Milaidhoo Island Maldives Baa Atoll welcomes children only from the age of eight and has no kids’ club. Most of the other resorts in this selection do have one.

Getting to your overwater villa: speedboat or seaplane
When you book an overwater villa, you also book the journey there. Resorts in North and South Malé Atoll are reached by speedboat or yacht, more distant atolls by seaplane from Malé or by domestic flight followed by a boat transfer. The seaplane ride is part of the holiday in itself: you see the atolls from above.
The Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari IslandsQuick by boat: the resort yacht takes you to Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi in around 45 minutes. The Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands is around 45 minutes by speedboat, around the clock, or about ten minutes by seaplane. SO/ Maldives is only around 15 minutes away by speedboat, and Baros Maldives around 25 minutes, at any hour on request.
Cheval Blanc Randheli MaldivesBy seaplane: Cheval Blanc Randheli Maldives flies guests in around 40 minutes in its own seaplane, with its own lounge at the airport. Constance Halaveli Maldives is around 25 minutes away, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island around 30 minutes; there the transfer is mandatory and not included in the room rate. The flight to Kuredhivaru Resort takes around 45 minutes.
