NIZUC Resort Cancun · Zona HoteleraThe right resort for your family depends mostly on your children's ages. For short transfers, our pick is NIZUC Resort Cancun at the southern tip of Cancún's Hotel Zone, about 15 minutes from the airport; its Winik's Kids Club takes children from four to twelve. Traveling with teens and want everything included? Book Grand Velas Los Cabos, with its own Teens' Club for 13- to 18-year-olds. Families after peace and quiet stay at Banyan Tree Mayakoba Playa del Carmen in a villa with a heated pool. And on calm, swimmable Santa Maria Bay you'll find Montage Los Cabos, with the Paintbox program for ages five to twelve. If you're visiting Mexico with kids, start by picking a coast: the Caribbean with Cancún and the Riviera Maya, or the Pacific with Los Cabos and Banderas Bay. Both are well set up for families; the difference lies mostly in the landscape and the beaches.
Kempinski Cancun · Zona HoteleraCancún and Costa Mujeres: In Cancún's Hotel Zone, the airport is close by. NIZUC Resort Cancun sits on the Punta Nizuc peninsula and has two beaches, one of them reserved for adults. Kempinski Cancun is right in the heart of the Hotel Zone, about 25 minutes from the airport, and every room has a balcony or terrace over the water. Farther north, in the gated community of Playa Mujeres, we recommend SLS Playa Mujeres, an all-inclusive resort with a kids' pool and waterslides.
Banyan Tree Mayakoba Playa del CarmenRiviera Maya: South of Cancún, things get greener. Inside the car-free Mayakoba community, between lagoons, mangroves and the Caribbean beach, you'll find Banyan Tree Mayakoba Playa del Carmen and Rosewood Mayakoba, where an electric boat takes you to your suite. Belmond Maroma Resort sits on a secluded beach amid 200 acres of jungle, about 30 minutes from Cancún airport. And in the Kanai development, The St. Regis Kanai Riviera Maya, a circular building, floats above a mangrove reserve.
Los Cabos: At the southern tip of Baja California, the resorts line the Tourist Corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Swimmable bays are rare here: Montage Los Cabos sits on calm Santa Maria Bay, and Grand Velas Los Cabos overlooks the Sea of Cortez from the same corridor. If you like to walk into town, stay at Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal: you reach the resort through a private tunnel, and downtown Cabo San Lucas and the marina are a five-minute walk away.
No booking fee: you pay the same price for your rate as for the same rate booked direct with the hotel – suitespot adds no mark-up, and the benefits come on top.
Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta: On Banderas Bay, Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit sits on a golden-sand beach in Nuevo Vallarta, about 20 minutes from Puerto Vallarta airport. Farther north, in the gated community on the Punta Mita peninsula, The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort gives you access to two Jack Nicklaus golf courses. For families who want to surf, we recommend Susurros del Corazón Punta de Mita on a surf beach in Punta de Mita, with lessons from a local pro.
For an overview of every property in the country, including those without a kids club, see our guide to the luxury hotels in Mexico.
If your kids want to swim in the ocean in Los Cabos, choose your hotel by its bay. Montage Los Cabos is on calm Santa Maria Bay, Chileno Bay Resort Cabo San Lucas on the protected cove of Playa Chileno, and One&Only Palmilla San José Del Cabo has Pelican Beach, a swimmable stretch on the Sea of Cortez. Tell our travel advisors how much ocean swimming matters to you, and we'll match the beach as well as the hotel.
Many clubs take children from age four. At NIZUC Resort Cancun, Winik's Kids Club looks after four- to twelve-year-olds; at Belmond Maroma Resort, the club is called La Casita Encantada and also welcomes ages four to twelve, and the resort keeps a sanctuary for Melipona bees. Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit pairs its Kids' Club for ages four to twelve with a Teens' Club and a spa for kids and teens. At Marriott Cancun Resort, Camp Club activities for ages four to twelve run until 7 pm.
Belmond Maroma Resort · Quintana RooSome resorts start at age five. The Paintbox program at Montage Los Cabos and the kids club at The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort are for ages five to twelve; at Fairmont Mayakoba Playa del Carmen it's five to eleven. At Chileno Bay Resort Cabo San Lucas, Pescaditos Kids Club takes children aged five and up from 9 am to 5 pm, by reservation.
Grand Velas Riviera Maya · Lol TunWith teenagers, look at the teen clubs. At Grand Velas Riviera Maya, the Kids' Club for ages four to twelve is open from 9 am to 10:45 pm and the Teens' Club for 13- to 18-year-olds from 11 am to midnight. Grand Velas Los Cabos has separate clubs for kids and teens. Esperanza Cabo San Lucas offers a teens club alongside its Tortuguitas Kids Club, and Hilton Vallarta Riviera runs its own program for ages 13 to 17.
Dinner for two? Babysitting is available at resorts including Rosewood Mayakoba, Grand Velas Riviera Maya with its Baby Concierge, InterContinental Presidente Cancun Resort with its Planet Trekkers Kids Club for ages four to twelve, and Conrad Punta de Mita. Our travel advisors check times and terms with the hotel before you arrive.
Many clubs only take children from age four or five, so with a toddler it pays to look at the exceptions. At Hilton Vallarta Riviera, children up to three can join the kids club with a parent during set hours, and at Chileno Bay Resort Cabo San Lucas the resort arranges childcare for under-fives separately. Our travel advisors will ask before you book what's possible for your child's age.
For space and a pool of your own, look at the villa resorts. At Banyan Tree Mayakoba Playa del Carmen, every one-, two- or three-bedroom villa has a heated pool, an outdoor jacuzzi and a separate living area. At Rosewood Mayakoba, every suite comes with a heated plunge pool and a dedicated butler. And at Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, every room, suite, casita and villa has an ocean-view terrace with its own plunge pool.
Rosewood MayakobaLarger families can book units with a kitchen: Chileno Bay Resort Cabo San Lucas rents villas with one to four bedrooms and Wolf and Sub-Zero kitchens, plus rooftop Sky Villas. One&Only Palmilla San José Del Cabo has added new two-bedroom family rooms and suites. At Grand Velas Riviera Maya, every room is a suite; families should book the Ambassador ambiance, which is designed for them.
Waterslides and splash zones are mostly found at the big all-inclusive resorts. At Marriott Cancun Resort, the family pool area has a lazy river, waterslides and a separate kids' pool. Hilton Cancún All-Inclusive Resort has a Splash Pool with slides, beach games and water toys. At Hotel Xcaret México Playa del Carmen, 16 pools and five waterslides are spread across the Casas, and admission to Xcaret group parks such as Xcaret, Xplor and Xel-Há is part of the hotel's All-Fun Inclusive concept.
Parents get a quiet corner too. Grand Velas Los Cabos has three infinity pools heated to 86°F: one for families, one for activities and one for adults only, plus a kids' pool with a splash pad and playground. At The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort, the family pool is the largest of three infinity pools cascading toward the beach. And Esperanza Cabo San Lucas has several family pools, including the Margarita pool with a gently sloping bottom.
Fine dining with the kids along? At Grand Velas Riviera Maya, Executive Chef Nahum Velasco cooks at Cocina de Autor, which holds one Michelin star; for a relaxed family dinner there's Lucca, with seafood and homemade pasta. At Grand Velas Los Cabos, Sidney Schutte leads Cocina de Autor, also with one Michelin star, and the menu is included in the all-inclusive rate. The restaurant only seats guests 18 and over; families dine at Velas 10, right on the ocean.
Grand Velas Los Cabos · Lomas del TuleMany resorts make kids feel at home at the table. SLS Playa Mujeres has its own kids' snack bar, Barracuda, with burgers, chicken tenders and tacos. At Hilton Cancún All-Inclusive Resort, kids help themselves to all the ice cream and churros they want at La Churreria. At Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya, the teppanyaki show at Kengai is a family favorite, and at Rosewood Mayakoba, everyone sits at long tables under a ceiba tree while dinner at La Ceiba Garden & Kitchen is cooked over an open flame.
No booking fee: you pay the same price for your rate as for the same rate booked direct with the hotel – suitespot adds no mark-up, and the benefits come on top.
For a night out for two while the kids are at the club or with a sitter: at Belmond Maroma Resort, Woodend by Curtis Stone grills over live fire on the beach. At Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, Executive Chef Gustavo Pinet serves just-caught fish and champagne at El Farallon, on a terrace carved into the cliffs above the Pacific. And at NIZUC Resort Cancun, Ramona, under Executive Chef Sylvain Desbois, reinterprets traditional Mexican cuisine, with a live Mexican duo in the evening.
Looking for another destination for a family vacation? Our guides to family hotels in Dubai, family resorts in the Maldives and family resorts in Portugal compare kids clubs and age rules.
Not every restaurant welcomes children. Cocina de Autor at Grand Velas Los Cabos is for guests 18 and over, the Bistro at Grand Velas Riviera Maya for guests 12 and over, and the Sal Steak Cave steakhouse at Paradisus Playa del Carmen Riviera Maya for adults only. Plan those evenings around childcare; our travel advisors are happy to coordinate your table and childcare with the hotel.
