Your guide to the best hotels in Xi'an

Xi'an was a capital for more than a thousand years and the eastern end of the Silk Road, and it is the only major Chinese city whose wall still stands complete – fourteen kilometres around, wide enough to cycle. The Ritz-Carlton Xi'anThe Ritz-Carlton Xi'an · HanchengWe list 10 hotels here with a median of 117 € a night – below Chengdu (127 €), Shanghai (191 €) and Beijing (199 €).

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

10 hotels in Xi'an – how to choose

Everything turns on whether you want to sleep inside the wall or outside it.Sofitel Legend People's Grand XianSofitel Legend People's Grand Xian · ZhongshanmenAt the city wall, in Xincheng district, sit three hotels: the Sofitel Legend People's Grand and the Sofitel Xi'an on Renmin Square at the same address in the historic grounds on Renmin Square, plus the Younch Hotel, whose categories are named for the view of the city wall. Our recommendation: the Sofitel Legend.

In the Hi-Tech Zone to the southwest stand the Ritz-Carlton Xi'an on Keji 2nd Road, the Shangri-La Xi'an on Keji Road and the Grand Hyatt Xi'an on Jinye Road. Our recommendation: the Ritz-Carlton.

To the south, in Qujiang, the W Xi'an and the Gran Meliá Xi'an face each other across the same lake; the Gran Meliá names categories for the garden and the lake. Our recommendation: the Gran Meliá.

Then there is the JW Marriott Xi'an in Weiyang to the north, with categories facing the city and the panorama, and, out in the airport city, the Cordis Xi'an.

Our travel advisors' insider tip

Two hotels in our selection share one address – and 90 euros separate them.

The Sofitel Legend People's Grand and the Sofitel Xi'an on Renmin Square both stand at 319 Dong Xin Street, in the historic grounds on Renmin Square. Same grounds, same garden, same position by the city wall – but two hotels of different class. The Sofitel Xi'an on Renmin Square starts at 50 €, the Sofitel Legend at 140 €.

So if it is the location you are after rather than the suite, you can have it here at the lowest price in our whole selection – and both carry 100 US dollars in hotel credit and breakfast for two.

Which raises the question that comes before all others in Xi'an: do you want to walk up onto the wall in the morning? If so, stay in Xincheng, and the choice is between those three hotels. If not, the Hi-Tech Zone is quieter, and the Ritz-Carlton is for us the first address in the city.

One more thing is different here from most cities: all ten hotels include breakfast for two – as a fixed benefit, on every rate.

In nine of the 10 addresses the suitespot benefits apply from the first night; at the Younch Hotel from the second.

Where to stay in Xi'an: the city wall, the Hi-Tech Zone or Qujiang

The airport lies forty kilometres northwest; the metro takes about an hour into the centre.Sofitel Xian on Renmin SquareSofitel Xian on Renmin Square · ZhongshanmenStay at the city wall if the city should happen on foot: the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower, the Muslim Quarter with its food stalls, the Great Mosque and the circuit on the wall itself, where you can hire a bicycle at the top. Our recommendation: the Sofitel Legend People's Grand.

Stay in the Hi-Tech Zone for quieter and more modern hotels (recommendation: the Ritz-Carlton), and in Qujiang for the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and the Tang park (recommendation: the Gran Meliá).

For orientation: the Terracotta Army lies some 40 kilometres east of the city – none of the hotels is near it, and none needs to be: the trip is a half-day out and you return to town in the evening. Mount Hua is half an hour away by high-speed train.

Rooms and suites in Xi'an

Xi'an is a city of noodles and skewers, and you taste that above all in the evening.JW Marriott Xi'anJW Marriott Xi'an · WeiyangIn the Muslim Quarter behind the Drum Tower the food stalls stand shoulder to shoulder: hand-pulled biang biang noodles, roujiamo – the flatbread with braised meat eaten here for centuries – and lamb skewers off the charcoal.

In the hotels breakfast for two is included without exception – in all ten.

For dinner the credit helps: at the Ritz-Carlton, 50 of the 100 US dollars are expressly for food and drink and 50 for the spa. At the Cordis a variable credit from 80 yuan applies to food, drink or the spa, rising to as much as 250 yuan on longer stays and selected rates.

What a stay in Xi'an costs

The median is 117 € a night. The selection starts at 50 € at the Sofitel Xi'an on Renmin Square and runs to 177 € at the Younch Hotel.

Below the median sit the Cordis from 80 €, the Gran Meliá from 82 €, the Shangri-La from 93 € and the JW Marriott from 95 €; above it the Ritz-Carlton from 171 € and the W Xi'an from 152 €.

Against the other Chinese cities: Chengdu sits at 127 €, Shanghai at 191 € and Beijing at 199 €. Xi'an is the most accessible of the four – with a density of history none of them matches.

It costs least in late autumn and winter, when the terracotta halls are empty and you have the wall to yourself. Book early for Chinese New Year week, the May holidays and the October national holidays – those are the most sought-after nights of the year.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

Dining, history and exclusive services

What makes Xi'an is the simultaneity: from fourteen kilometres of wall you look inward onto Ming-era courtyards and outward onto towers.

Worth seeing are the Terracotta Army at Lintong, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda from the 7th century, the Bell and Drum Towers, the Shaanxi History Museum with its Silk Road finds, and the Forest of Stelae with its inscribed tablets.

For a day trip: Mount Hua with its ridges, the tomb of the first emperor, or the Han Yangling Museum, where you walk over glass floors above the excavations.

Alongside breakfast for two, an upgrade where available and late check-out, three of the 10 hotels add a credit of 100 US dollars: freely usable at the Sofitel Legend and the Sofitel Xi'an on Renmin Square, and at the Ritz-Carlton split into 50 US dollars for food and drink and 50 for the spa.

At the Gran Meliá a credit of 100 US dollars applies from three nights. At the Younch Hotel, the Shangri-La and the Grand Hyatt it is 50 US dollars each, and at the Cordis a variable credit from 80 yuan. We register your VIP status before you arrive.

In Qujiang for the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda (recommendation: Gran Meliá). And in Weiyang to the north, the JW Marriott.

Which hotel is closest to the Terracotta Army?

None – and that is no drawback. The Terracotta Army lies some 40 kilometres east of the city at Lintong; the visit is a half-day trip you return from in the evening. So choose your hotel by the city, not by the excavation site.

Why are there two Sofitels at the same address?

Because both belong to the historic grounds on Renmin Square: the Sofitel Legend People's Grand and the Sofitel Xi'an on Renmin Square share 319 Dong Xin Street – same garden, same position, two hotels of different class. Between them lie 50 € and 140 €.

A credit of 100 US dollars is added at three hotels, and at the Gran Meliá one from three nights; at the Younch, the Shangri-La and the Grand Hyatt it is 50 US dollars each, and at the Cordis a variable credit from 80 yuan.

Is there a minimum stay in Xi'an?

In nine of the 10 addresses the suitespot benefits apply from the first night. Only at the Younch Hotel do they apply from two nights. That is separate from the credit at the Gran Meliá, which applies from three nights – every other benefit there applies from the first.
