Several resorts welcomed their first guests in summer 2025. On Marathi Beach near Chania you stay at the JW Marriott Crete, the brand’s first hotel in Greece: each of the 160 units has a sea view, most come with a private pool, and the restaurants cook with produce from the resort’s own JW Garden. Above the sandy beach of Episkopi, a seven-minute drive east of Rethymno, lies the OROS Luxury Beach Resort Crete: 139 of its 221 rooms, suites and villas have a private pool, and guests aged 12 and over have the Pool Club to themselves.
JW Marriott Crete · CreteIn the far northwest of the island, Tella Thera Kissamos opened in July 2025. Its 20 suites sit partly underground beneath planted green roofs, each with at least 140 m² of living and terrace space, and 17 of them have their own plunge pool. At Domes of Elounda Crete, guests aged 16 and over have stayed in the new Chora wing since September 2025: 17 stone-built suites with a plunge pool or hot tub, plus a pool of their own and the terrace of the Makris restaurant facing Spinalonga.

Venetian town houses: Casa Delfino bears the name of a sea captain. Petro Delfino received the 17th-century mansion as a dowry after his wife’s father, a ship-owner from Marseille, had bought it in the 19th century; it has been a hotel since 1989 and is run today by the sixth generation of the family. In Rethymno, the Rimondi Boutique Hotel brings together two buildings from the Venetian era: Palazzo Rimondi with Renaissance details, extended under Ottoman rule, and Rimondi Estate with 16th-century stone walls and arched doorways.

Tradition in a new form: Elounda Mare Hotel has been part of Relais & Châteaux since 1988, with white cottages and bungalows in fragrant gardens. The Troulis family built The Royal Senses Resort Crete next to their sister resort The Royal Blue; it opened in 2020 and in 2021 became the first Curio Collection by Hilton hotel in Greece. InterContinental Crete · CreteAgios Nikolaos: If you want to walk into town in the evening, this is the place to stay. The St Nicolas Bay Resort Hotel Crete lies on a peninsula about a mile from the center, on the road to Elounda. From Minos Beach Art Hotel Aghios Nikolaos, whose bungalows stretch along two kilometers of shoreline, you walk into town, just as you do from the InterContinental Crete on the seafront road.
Malia and Stalis: East of Heraklion, two beach hotels sit on the north coast. For families we recommend Phāea Cretan Malia, with a shallow sandy beach, kids’ clubs up to age twelve and a separate area for teenagers. Alai Crete in Stalis reopened in June 2024 after a full makeover.

Chania: The luxury hotels around Chania combine old town and beach. In the Venetian old town you stay at Casa Delfino, a mansion with 24 rooms and suites. Where should I stay in Crete: east or west?
The east around Elounda and Agios Nikolaos is resort country on Mirabello Bay, with villas, private pools and views of Spinalonga. Further west, Rethymno and Chania combine Venetian old towns with beaches just outside town. If you are looking for a 5-star hotel in Crete for a first trip, you can combine both: a few nights in the old town, then a resort on the bay.
