Where to stay in Tallinn: in Maakri, just outside the old town
The Radisson Collection Hotel Tallinn stands in Maakri, the business district immediately outside the old town. This is the part of Tallinn where the towers are – and from there it is a few minutes on foot into a city that looks like the fifteenth century.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants to be in the old town in the evening without living in it: Maakri is quiet at night.
What is within reach: the town hall square with the only surviving Gothic town hall in northern Europe and the council pharmacy, working on the same spot since 1422; Toompea, the cathedral hill, with its viewing platforms over the tiled roofs and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral; and Telliskivi, the former factory grounds behind the station, now full of workshops, shops and places to eat.
For orientation: the airport is about ten minutes by car – Tallinn has one of the closest airports to a city centre in Europe. The ferry port for Helsinki is just as near; the crossing takes about two hours. And the park at Kadriorg with Peter the Great’s summer palace begins a quarter of an hour east.
