Your guide to the best hotels in Ubud

Ubud lies inland on Bali, a good hour from the airport, between rice terraces and two river gorges. There is no beach here – instead there is morning mist over the valley and temples still in use.Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton ReserveMandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve · Kabupaten GianyarWe list 13 hotels here with a median of 260 € a night – below the median for the island as a whole (344 €), which includes the beach resorts of the south, and below Seminyak (268 €).

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

13 hotels in Ubud – how to choose

The addresses spread across some twenty kilometres of valley.Capella Ubud BaliCapella Ubud Bali · TegalalangFurthest north, high above the gorges, sit the Buahan Banyan Tree above the river, the Cicada Resort Bali Ubud near Tegallalang and the Anantara Ubud in Payangan, whose categories are named for the view into the forest. Our recommendation: the Buahan Banyan Tree.

To the northwest, on the Ayung, come the Capella Ubud with categories facing the valley and the forest, the COMO Shambhala Estate in Payangan and the Alila Ubud. Our recommendation: the Capella Ubud.

Around Ubud itself stand five hotels: the Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve on the Ayung gorge, the Amandari just above it, the Viceroy Bali in the hamlet of Nagi, the COMO Uma Ubud on the road to Sanggingan and the Sthala Ubud in Lodtunduh. Our recommendation: the Mandapa.

And in the south, towards Denpasar, the Gdas Health and Wellness Resort facing the rice terraces and the Westin Ubud Resort. Our recommendation: the Gdas.

Our travel advisors' insider tip

Ubud is not a place but a valley – and that decides your day.

Between our northernmost and our southernmost address lie some twenty kilometres: from the Buahan Banyan Tree above the gorges to the Westin Ubud in the south. On Balinese back roads, behind scooters and ceremonial processions, that is considerably more than half an hour.

Book “in Ubud” and you are booking either ten minutes' walk from the market and the Monkey Forest – or a drive away from it, with mist in the valley and not a single scooter outside the window.

Both are right, but they are two different trips. Which raises the question that comes before the choice of hotel: do you want to walk into town in the evening? If so, choose among the hotels around Ubud itself – the Mandapa and the Amandari are there. If not, the north wins: more river, more forest, less traffic.

The selection starts at 89 € at the Mandapa and 102 € at the Sthala Ubud.

In nine of the 13 addresses the suitespot benefits apply from the first night; at the Buahan Banyan Tree, the Viceroy, the Gdas and the Alila Ubud from the second – which in this valley nobody experiences as a condition anyway.

Where to stay in Ubud: above the gorge, on the Ayung or in town

From Denpasar airport it is a good hour to Ubud with a driver; within the valley the hotel car is the way to get around.Buahan Banyan Tree BaliBuahan Banyan Tree Bali · UbudStay in the north above the gorges if the landscape is the reason for the trip: the Ayung canyon, the rice terraces of Tegallalang, the morning mist. Our recommendation: the Buahan Banyan Tree.

Stay on the Ayung for the same quiet but closer to town (recommendation: the Capella Ubud).

Stay around Ubud itself if the evening should happen on foot: the market, the royal palace with its evening dance performances, the Monkey Forest, the workshops of the silversmiths and painters. Our recommendation: the Mandapa, for us the first address in the valley.

And in the south you are closer to the Denpasar road and to the rice terraces (recommendation: the Gdas).

For orientation: the southern beaches are a good hour away, the Tirta Empul temple half an hour, the Batur volcano about one.

Villas and rooms in Ubud

Ubud cooks a great deal of vegetarian food – not as a trend, but because that is what the Balinese cuisine of the highlands looks like.Cicada Resort Bali UbudCicada Resort Bali Ubud · TegallalangOne figure stands out here: all 13 hotels include breakfast for two – as a fixed benefit, on every rate. At the COMO Shambhala Estate it applies at the Kudus House, at the COMO Uma Ubud at the Kemiri; at the Amandari it is a continental breakfast.

For the evening the way leads into town: the warungs on Jalan Hanoman, the kitchens on Jalan Raya, and the rice-field restaurants you reach along narrow dykes.

Do try bebek betutu – the duck that cooks for hours in banana leaves – and a cooking class that starts at the market.

What a stay in Ubud costs

The median is 260 € a night. The selection starts at 89 € at the Mandapa and runs to 1,366 € at the Buahan Banyan Tree.

Below sit the Sthala Ubud from 102 €, the Alila Ubud from 153 € and the Westin Ubud from 163 €; above it the Amandari from 907 €, the Capella Ubud from 771 € and the COMO Shambhala Estate from 621 €.

For comparison: the median for the island as a whole is 344 €, Seminyak 268 €. So on average you stay more affordably in the valley than on the beach – on plots that up here are considerably larger.

It costs least from January to March: those are the greenest months, the rice terraces are full and the waterfalls carry water. Book early for July and August, the days between the years and around Nyepi, the Balinese new year in March, when the valley falls silent for a day and the night sky opens.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

Dining, temples and exclusive services

Ubud has been the place painters come to for a hundred years – and that still shapes the valley.

Worth seeing are the Monkey Forest with its three temples, the royal palace with its evening legong performances, the Blanco and Puri Lukisan museums, the rice terraces of Tegallalang and, half an hour north, the spring temples Tirta Empul and Gunung Kawi.

For a day trip: the Batur volcano with its crater lake, the Sidemen valley to the east, or the waterfalls near Gitgit.

Alongside breakfast for two, an upgrade where available and late check-out, three of the 13 hotels add a freely usable credit of 100 US dollars – the Mandapa, the Capella Ubud and the Anantara Ubud. At the Viceroy Bali a credit of the same size applies during the stay at the hotel, at the COMO Shambhala Estate from two nights, and at the Amandari for food and drink.

At the Gdas it is 50 US dollars, and at the COMO Uma Ubud likewise 50 from two nights. You earn points and status in 7 of the 13 hotels, across four programmes, most often Marriott Bonvoy. We register your VIP status before you arrive.
