The newest address in this selection is Anantara Ubud Bali, which opened on 1 October 2024 on a wooded slope near the village of Banjar Puhu in Payangan. Even the lobby sits high up, with panoramic views of Mount Agung and a “Gamelatron”, an electronically played gamelan sculpture. What that means for you: two heated infinity pools, one for adults only and one for families, and 35 pool villas with their own infinity pool and a villa host.

Atelier Ikebuchi redesigned the Ojas wellness centre in white Carrara marble, black Corian and teak; new additions include a contrast therapy room with ice bath and infrared sauna, hyperbaric oxygen and an indoor fitness centre. Two of the five residences were completely renovated. At Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve you have been working out since 2024 in a completely redesigned gym with Technogym equipment.
Two small retreats are also still young. Buahan Banyan Tree Bali opened in June 2022 as the first Banyan Tree Escape, with bales without walls or doors, separated from the rainforest only by curtains. Gdas Health and Wellness Resort Bali in the woodcarving village of Mas has welcomed guests since November 2022 and joined Small Luxury Hotels of the World in January 2023. And in August 2024 Marriott brought Cicada Resort Bali Ubud in the Sebatu valley into its Autograph Collection.
Ubud has no sea; instead, its pools sit above river valleys and rice fields. For many guests, a pool with a valley view is the real reason to book a 5-star hotel in Ubud.
Our tip for the view is Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve: the infinity pool lies in the lower part of the resort right next to the rice terraces, with cabanas and a pool bar. At Amandari the pool is 28 metres long and curves like the rice fields below, looking out over the Ayung valley. Alila Ubud Bali has a single main pool, emerald green on the slope above the same valley.
A pool right outside your door comes with every one of the 16 bales at Buahan Banyan Tree Bali. At Capella Ubud Bali each of the 23 tents has its own pool, and there is also The Cistern, a heated 20-metre pool in the rainforest. On the edge of the Ayung gorge, the story begins with an architect: from 1970 Peter Muller pursued the idea of a resort in the style of a Balinese mountain village; in Aman he found his partner, and in 1989 Amandari opened as the second Aman resort. The pavilions have roofs of alang-alang thatch, and 129 steps below lies a 7th-century shrine guarded by a stone tiger.
Amandari · GianyarAlila Ubud Bali was one of GHM’s two Bali hotels, whose takeover in 2001 gave rise to the Alila brand; the architecture is by Kerry Hill, and Alila has belonged to Hyatt since 2018. In 2004 COMO Uma Ubud opened as the first COMO hotel in Ubud, and in the same year COMO took over the nearby Begawan Giri Estate, today’s COMO Shambhala Estate Bali.
Two younger luxury hotels in Ubud have a signature all of their own. Margaret Syrowatka built Viceroy Bali herself above the “Valley of the Kings” and opened it in 2005; her family still runs it independently of any hotel chain. Capella Ubud Bali, opened in 2018, is a tribute to the first European settlers on Bali in the 19th century, and its restaurant is named after the Danish trader Mads Johansen Lange, known as the “White King of Bali”.
Michelin Keys recognise hotels, not restaurants, and in Ubud six hotels hold this distinction.

Viceroy Bali sits on a ridge above the Petanu valley, with a free shuttle to the centre from 7 am to 10.30 pm. COMO Shambhala Estate Bali · PayanganPayangan, 15 to 40 minutes north: this is where you stay in real peace and quiet. Buahan Banyan Tree Bali lies in the village of Buahan Kaja on a jungle slope with views of seven mountain peaks, COMO Shambhala Estate Bali on around nine hectares of jungle above the Ayung. From Alila Ubud Bali a free shuttle takes you into town.
Tegallalang, around 20 minutes north: Capella Ubud Bali lies in the Keliki valley, where rice terraces meet the jungle; from four nights the airport transfer is free. From Cicada Resort Bali Ubud in the Sebatu valley it is around ten minutes to the Tegallalang rice terraces.

In the south, towards the airport: Gdas Health and Wellness Resort Bali is in the woodcarving village of Mas, around an hour by car from the airport. In Singakerta, a short drive south of the centre, The Westin Ubud Resort stands above the Wos river.
