JW Marriott Hotel Kalkutta · TopsiaIt is louder and less polished than Delhi or Mumbai, and that is exactly the reason to come. For this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Kolkata and chose one: the JW Marriott, a 5-star hotel.A night at the JW Marriott Hotel Kalkutta costs €107. That includes breakfast for two, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability, early check-in and late check-out subject to availability and a welcome gift. You keep earning Marriott Bonvoy points and status benefits as usual.
Why we recommend it: €107 is the lowest price in this guide, and what you get for it is a JW Marriott, the upscale line of the brand. That is the real argument of this destination. Add what a hotel this size brings with it: two pool areas, one of them an infinity pool, a spa and four restaurants.
One piece of advice decides this destination.
Ask about club lounge access. Our travel advisors explicitly recommend a category with lounge access for this hotel, and in India that is not a status symbol but a daily convenience: breakfast without the crowd, drinks in the evening, a quiet place to work while the city outside is loud. At this base rate the supplement is modest – our travel advisors will work it out for you when you enquire.
The benefits apply from the first night. A single night brings you the full package. That is practical for Kolkata: many people take the city as a stop on the way to Darjeeling or the north-east.
The JW Marriott stands in Topsia, in the east of the city.
Our recommendation for anyone who wants to know what they are getting into: this is not an old-town address. Topsia sits on the eastern bypass, and that is precisely the advantage on arrival and departure – Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose airport is about sixteen kilometres away without crossing the centre.
Colonial Kolkata you drive to. The Victoria Memorial, the Maidan and Park Street lie west, twenty minutes or an hour depending on the time of day. In Kolkata the clock matters more than the distance.
On a first visit, plan your journeys for the morning or after eight in the evening.
The hotel lists five categories, and three of them are suites.
The rooms are Room and Executive Room; the suites are Deluxe Suite, Executive Suite and Presidential Suite. Three suites out of five categories is a high share for a city hotel.
Our travel advisors clarify the size and outlook of each category before you book. Our travel advisors' recommendation here is unambiguous: a category with club lounge access.
For scale: the hotel itself reports 21 suites – those are rooms, not categories. Both numbers are correct; they count different things.
A night at the luxury hotel in Kolkata costs €107. The suitespot benefits apply from the first night.
When it is at its best: November to February. Dry and pleasantly warm, and the city is outdoors – this is also festival season.
When it is busiest: October, during Durga Puja. Kolkata's biggest festival fills the city completely; book months ahead if you are coming for it, and avoid those days if you are not.
When to think twice: June to September. The monsoon brings rain and humidity, and the lowest prices.
How long to stay: two or three nights. One for the colonial centre, one for the markets and the flower market by the river – and anyone going on to Darjeeling adds a night here anyway.
On the minimum stay: there is none. A single night brings you the full package, in January as in July.
And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.
Kolkata is where India is least smoothed over, and for many people that is exactly what makes it the most interesting.
Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comThe first thing is the colonial inheritance. The white marble Victoria Memorial stands at the edge of the Maidan, the green expanse in the middle of the city. Around it: courts, clubs, the Howrah Bridge over the Hooghly. You can see that this was once a capital.
The second is the food. Bengali cooking is its own thing: river fish, mustard oil, and a sweet tradition with shops of its own. In the hotel, Vintage Asia covers the Asian side, and the bar 2:fifty9 is open, as the name says, until just before three.
The third is the river. On the Hooghly, the flower market sits under the Howrah Bridge and starts before sunrise. That is the one appointment in Kolkata worth getting up early for.
What our travel advisors arrange most often here is the car with a driver. In this city that is not comfort, it is the difference between two destinations in a day and five. Then there is the early check-in – many flights from Europe land at dawn.
