The best-known houses stand almost entirely along the western shore between Como and Menaggio. Villa d'Este in Cernobbio (from around EUR 740) has been the lake's defining address since the 16th century; a few kilometres north follow Passalacqua in Moltrasio (from around EUR 1,210) and the Mandarin Oriental in Blevio (from around EUR 860).

Lake Como is shaped like an upside-down Y, and that has very practical consequences. The shore roads are narrow and winding, and the 30 kilometres from Como to Bellagio take a good hour by car. Choose the wrong side and you will spend the holiday driving.

The stretch immediately north of Como gathers the most famous houses on the lake. Villa d'Este in Cernobbio (from around EUR 740) is a Renaissance estate of the 16th century that has been run as a hotel since 1873. In Moltrasio follows Passalacqua (from around EUR 1,210), and in Blevio, on the opposite bank, the Mandarin Oriental Lake Como (from around EUR 860).
Tremezzina and Bellagio: gardens and the postcard view
Halfway up the western shore stand the Grand Hotel Tremezzo in Tremezzo (from around EUR 759) and The Lake Como EDITION in Cadenabbia (from around EUR 810). At around EUR 1,275 a night, Il Sereno Lake Como in Torno on the eastern shore is the most expensive house in the region – and the only one that is not a historic building but a contemporary structure set directly above the water.
Como: the town at the southern tip
To experience the lake without villa prices, stay in Como: the Sheraton Lake Como is the region's most affordable entry at around EUR 258 a night, joined by the Palazzo Venezia Lago di Como (from around EUR 650) and the Palazzo San Gottardo (from around EUR 342). Ferries leave from here for the whole lake, and Milan is a good hour away by train.

The jump between town and lakeshore is larger than the jump between categories within a single house.
The season is short and clearly defined. Most houses open from March or April to October or November and close over the winter – something that catches many first-time visitors out. The finest weeks are May and June, when the gardens are in flower and the lake is not yet busy, and September. July and August are hot and crowded.
