Your guide to the best luxury hotel in Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is the fishing village on the Algarve that supplies the postcard: white hotels in a cove between ochre cliffs, the rock formations of Algar Seco, the Benagil cave a few coves along – and above, on the cliff, the terraces from which one sees the Atlantic without interruption.Tivoli Carvoeiro AlgarveTivoli Carvoeiro Algarve · LagoaFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Carvoeiro and chose one: a luxury hotel on the Vale Covo cliff – with a list in which the sea costs not a single square metre. What that means for booking is below.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

One luxury hotel in Carvoeiro – and who it suits

Our choice for Carvoeiro is the Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve on the Vale Covo cliff, in the municipality of Lagoa, 900 metres from the nearest beach. In our ranking it stands at 4.7 out of 5, and a night starts at 120 euros. The hotel belongs to Minor Hotels and to their GHA Discovery programme.

Why we recommend it: Because it is the hotel that stands on the cliff rather than behind it: 248 rooms on the Vale Covo rock, with a clifftop pool above the Atlantic and the Sky Bar Carvoeiro on the roof, which in the evening shows the coast as far as Portimão. Dinner is at The One with Portuguese cooking and at the Mare Bistro; the spa has more than 800 square metres, four treatment suites and an indoor pool for the months when the Atlantic is too cool. Algar Seco is four hundred metres away, Benagil three kilometres, Faro airport three quarters of an hour. Our recommended category is called Deluxe Sea View.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

The sea costs not a single square metre here – and the recommendation appears twice in the list.

The rooms: 23 square metres in the Superior and in the Deluxe to the sea; then 29, 35 and 39 in three further Superiors, 34 in the Family Deluxe and in the Premium to the sea, 37 in the Deluxe to the sea, 43 in the Family Deluxe, 48 in the Premium to the ocean and 63 in the largest Family Deluxe. Twelve categories, and all of them are rooms – that is rare.

What that means: the smallest floor space in the hotel, 23 square metres, comes in two versions – as Superior and as Deluxe Sea View, our recommendation. Same space, different window. Anyone booking the Deluxe pays for the sea, not for room; and because room here goes up to 63 square metres, that is the order in which to think: first the view, then the space.

Four categories are called Superior – at 23, 29, 35 and 39 square metres. Anyone booking one of them asks our travel advisors about the window. Anyone wanting the sea with more room has the ladder: Premium at 34 to the sea, Deluxe at 37 to the sea, Premium at 48 to the ocean. Families go to the three Family Deluxe up to 63.

The package: breakfast, 100 US dollars credit, upgrade on arrival, early check-in and late check-out and a welcome gift.

Our advice: Book the view, not the level. With a 120-euro entry and a Deluxe to the sea on the same floor space as the Superior, the recommendation is the cheapest sea view we know of – and the upgrade on arrival leads from there only upwards.

Where to stay in Carvoeiro: on the Vale Covo cliff, 900 metres from the beach

The Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve stands on the Vale Covo cliff, in the municipality of Lagoa – four hundred metres from Algar Seco, eight hundred from Carvoeiro’s village beach, three kilometres from Benagil, eight from Portimão and around 60 road kilometres from Faro airport.

Our recommendation is therefore for anyone wanting the Atlantic from the balcony rather than from the beach – and for families to whom a clifftop pool and a family room up to 63 square metres matter more than the village at the door.

What lies within reach: Algar Seco, the rock formations with the arch and the grotto, on foot along the cliff path; Carvoeiro beach in the cove with the village, ten minutes; the Benagil cave, by boat from Carvoeiro or Benagil, three kilometres.

For orientation: Faro airport is three quarters of an hour away, Portimão with the marina a quarter of an hour, Silves with the Moorish castle half an hour. The Seven Hanging Valleys cliff trail begins at the neighbouring beach of Vale de Centeanes. Along the cliff one walks; into the village the shuttle drives.

Twelve categories: the best hotel in Carvoeiro from the inside

The Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve offers twelve categories, all as rooms – five of them with a particular view.

The small rooms: 23 square metres in the Superior and in the Deluxe to the sea – our recommended category –, 29 in the Superior.

The middle ones: 34 in the Family Deluxe and in the Premium to the sea, 35 in the Superior, 37 in the Deluxe to the sea, 39 in the Superior.

The large ones: 43 in the Family Deluxe, 48 in the Premium to the ocean, 63 in the largest Family Deluxe.

On the view: this hotel’s motif is the Atlantic below the cliff – four categories face it as Sea View, a fifth as Ocean View.

What applies equally to every category: breakfast for two, 100 US dollars credit per stay, the upgrade on arrival subject to availability, early check-in and late check-out subject to availability and a welcome gift.

What a night at the luxury hotel in Carvoeiro costs

A night at the luxury hotel in Carvoeiro starts at 120 euros.

The suitespot benefits apply here from the first night. Included are: breakfast for two, 100 US dollars credit, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability, early check-in and late check-out and a welcome gift.

When it is loveliest: from April to October, when the clifftop pool has the sun and the water in the coves is warm enough for the boat trip to Benagil.

What belongs to Carvoeiro: winter. From November to February the village is quiet, the Atlantic loud and the indoor pool in the spa the reason to book the hotel anyway. That is not a warning but the calendar: anyone coming then has the cliff path to themselves.

When to ask early: in July and August, when the Algarve is full, and at Easter.

How long to stay: four nights – cliff, Benagil, Silves and a day without a plan.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

248 rooms, a clifftop pool and exclusive services in a 5-star hotel

The Algarve is the coast where Portugal ends and the Atlantic begins: limestone rocks the sea has cut into arches and caves, coves with names nobody can pronounce, and villages that become fishing villages again in winter.

Three things belong to it. First the Benagil cave: the dome with the hole to the sky, only from the water, three kilometres. Second Algar Seco: the rock formations with the Boneca window, four hundred metres along the cliff path. Third Silves: the old capital of the Moorish Algarve with the red castle, half an hour.

The package at this hotel is breakfast, credit, upgrade, check-in and check-out and gift.

What our travel advisors arrange most often: the category facing the sea, for the reason stated above, the table at The One and the boat trip to Benagil early in the morning – because the cave is empty at eight and no longer at eleven.
